Yorkies and hot weather I read that yorkies do bettter in the cold than in the heat. I have noticed this, because I live in Texas. I want to take Tinker to the lake, but am worried about her over heating. I have a life jacket for her and was thinking that I could keep that wet and it would keep her coo, or I could just dunk her in the water ever once in awhile =). I also wanted to know if they sunburn. Her hair isn't very thick and it parts down the middle of her back, and I am worried that her poor little skin will get sunburned. I really want to take her with me, but I am worried about how she would do. If anyone has any advice I would really really appreciate it. Thanks. |
I'm not sure how true this is...but I heard that they have a puppy sunscreen that you can put on their coat. As long as you bring water for her to drink (plenty) and keep her cool she should be fine and have a great time |
heat i have to say. i live in florida and i know how your feeling about heat issues. I am probably 1 of the most worried soon-2-be mommys there is! my sugestion is 1. dont stay at the lake too long (like 6 hours!) without some sort of protection (like an umbrella or if there is doggie sunscreen) I think if its not already invented whoever makes dog suncreen would be rich! |
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/co...s/qa/1011.html Ihrke says the animals most at risk for sun-caused skin disease and cancer are those with short, white coats, light-colored skin and sparse tummy fur. Breeds that fit these characteristic include Dalmatians, bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, whippets, Italian greyhounds and greyhounds. The more sun, the greater the risk, he says, noting that dogs who like to sunbathe and are permitted to do so are at the greatest risk. Skin cancer can hit dogs as young as 4 years old, he says, which is why prevention extremely important. Decreasing exposure is the only way to protect an animal from sun-related problems. "Preventing sunbathing, roofs over outdoor runs, and solar protective T-shirts or dog shirts can be very helpful," says Ihrke. "We also recommend waterproof pediatric or children's sunscreens. Sunscreens designed for children are less likely to be irritating and commonly do not have scents added." Brand names mentioned by Ihrke as being safe for use on pets include Johnson & Johnson's Waterbabies, Bullfrog waterproof and EltaBlock waterproof. The benefit of waterproof products, says Ihrke, is that they're also dog-saliva-proof. Here is a web page for doggy sunscreen but it seems childrens is okay too http://www.furlongspetsupply.com/dog_sunscreen.htm |
Living in WI I know that Yorkies don't do that great in the cold. At least not my little guy... As for as going to the lake your baby should be fine as long as have plenty of water, keep cool, and have some type of shade for her. I would think that children's sunscreen would be fine, you might just want to call the vet. Have fun!! :D |
Myguyalex: Lucy must be opposite from Alex b/c she did great in the cold weather (it's me who doesn't do well in the cold, lol). I'm curious to see how she handles the hot weather - if it ever comes! |
Sally Beauty At Sally Beauty Supply they sell a product called ION. They make a leave it conditioner spray that has sunscreen in it. It would be easy to apply and be a bonus for the sheen! |

I think Lucy is just too nosy to be bothered by the cold weather. She has too many things to do and so many things to see outside (and this is in a fenced in yard)..neighbor dogs to spy on through the fence, chase some birds, chew on sticks, play in snow, etc. lol. |
I noticed that Jerry tends to sleep more durring the summer....I actually think he hates the cold more than the heat for some reason.....I dunno I think it all depends on the yorkie :) |
I think all dogs always don't mix in with the weather. Like Jane. She and rain DO NOT go together. She is very much so a tomboy. But can be a Girly Girl when she wants to be. Brat! |
Tinker seems to not do so well in the heat. I walked from my apartment to the mail boxes, which is like a 2 minute walk, by the time I get back she is panting like crazy. I have to put a cold rag on her neck to cool her down. I know she does fine in the cold, because I went to colorado for christmas, and Tinker loved the snow!!! I opened the front door and Tinker took off. My boyfriend had to chase her down the driveway, and she was jump in the snow like a little bunny. I wish I had taken pictures. I am probably just paranoid, but I am so protective of my baby. One little thing can send them in a downward spiral fast since they are so tiny....you know? |
I would just take a little care package for Tinker, with nutri-cal and someone told me to give my Polly some pedilite (mispelled) since she is small. If you are like me I worry sometime I think for nothing, but just in case with all that will be going on if you have all the stuff in one place it will be easy to find. Have fun and take pic's of Tinker in the water. |
Wow, you could have fooled me that they don't like or do well in warm weather. I live in Arizona and we are experiencing the first 100's of the season and I can hardly get him to come in the house when I feel he should cool off. He still zooms around like it is 70 outside so I guess warm weather agrees with him? I was going to buy him a little kiddy wading pool to play in but I am worried I he will never want to come in the house then. Yes, he is quite spoiled he has a sand box too...A good alternative to digging up the yard! |

I dont take to well to the cold either but I cant imagine having my tummy rubbin on the snow when I walk around like the poor little doggies. I closest thing that has happened to me is snowmobiling we stopped for a potty break in the middle of a woods somewhere cause I could hold it anymore and with all my layers of clothes around my ankles I tipped over and my butt hit the snow. Not a good feeling let me tell you and it was REALLY cold. |
