Odd Question about my Bernie-Bear Hi! You may know that we adopted Bernie from a rescue a few weeks ago. Well, he's an awesome dog and we love him bunches. :luvu: He has one behavior that concerns me though and I wonder if anyone has seen anything like this. In the evening, he'll go lay on one of the dog beds, wrap his front paws around one side and put a large part in his mouth. He doesn't chew or even suck on it, he just holds it in his mouth... and tightly between his arms and goes to sleep. :dogzzz: could this be a sign he was taken from his momma too young? :( Something else? or am I just being paranoid???:confused: |
Is he putting his paw in his mouth? That is cute, I wish I knew why. Perhaps it just makes him feel safe and comfy? I think I would worry if he was chewing on it. |
I wonder if you could slip a little toy there to replace it. |
Thanks for your input. No, his paw doesn't go into his mouth, just the bed. When he finally lets go, it's soaked! But he doesn't seem to be chewing, just "grasping" if that makes sense, lol. It is cute, but in an odd way its a little heartbreaking too. He seems to get comfort from doing it, and (he was doing that when I posted earlier) after about 10 minutes he lets go, repositions himself and sleeeeeeps. He's the only dog I've ever had who sleeps so deeply, we have to physically pick him up to wake him. :rolleyes: |
I've noticed that a few have odd little quirky habits...I say, if it makes him happy, let him do it. What's a little slobber among friends? It isn't major destruction of anything and the poor kid had a rough time before he found you. Bless you for giving him such a loving home. |

It sounds like to me that its just some habit, but if he is sleeping that sound then he knows he is safe...poor thing sounds like he didn't get to much sleep before....Your a real sweetheart for rescuing him....:) |

Katie has a soft squeaky bone that she does the same thing with. She gets it in her mouth and wraps her paws around it and she will drift off to sleep with her little head bobbing off to the side and she will catch herself and do that about 3 or 4 times and then finally go to sleep. Come to think of it she hasn't done it since she had her pups but used to do it a lot. I think it is a comfort thing, but possibly has something to do with early weaning? Her mommy got mastitis and they had to wean them from her at 4 weeks. I never thought about that until you mentioned it. Anyway, I don't think it is anything to worrry about. I think they just like something to cuddle sometimes. |
My childhood dog used to do this all the time and did so up til he passed aged 15 years. |
It sounds like he is used to comforting himself and just got into this habit. I bet he didn't let go at all before he came to you!! |
This is his security Blanket I would not worry about your dog going to sleep with his mouth on the bed. My brother has a dog that has done this since a puppy, he is 12 years old and still does it. The Vet told them it was like a child with a security blanket or a favorite toy that they snuggle up to when going to sleep. It makes him feel secure and safe. You are great for rescuing this puppy. One of our "no kill" shelters here gives each new puppy a toy to be in their cage with. They become attached to this and it goes to their new home with them. Maybe this happened to him at the shelter???? |
