Looking into getting a yorkie I am looking into getting a yorkie and there are some questions that I would like to ask you seniors since I am a newbie....... OK First I would like to ask you if any of you ever dress your little darlings up in clothes? Second I was wondering if anyone carried their little darling in a cute little carrier? And I would like to know what's a reasonable price for a female yorkie? Thank YOu so much, Jocleyn :) |
I think a lot of people on here both dress their babies and have carriers. It is hard to say what a reasonable price is, breeders these days feel the need to charge more based on size, for example they will use the word "tiny" and a marketing technique to get people to pay more. I would stay away from breeders who seem like they are in it for the "money," signs would be using "teacup, tiny" and charging a ridiculous amount, and if they are breeding more than 1 breed. I dress my girl up in cute little shirts and sweaters. I use a carrier sometimes. I like using a harness more. Its hard to tell you what a good price is without knowing your area and what the going price is there. I paid 1200 for my female. She is going to be on the smaller side for a yorkie. Good luck! |
I dress mine and do their hair and polish their nails, and I do carry the smaller one in a handbag places. Just remember that it's a lot more than a cute little dog, they're like having a baby at first!!! Lots of hard work. Be sure to read up on the breed before you buy so you know what to look for. I may be a newbie to the Yorkie breed (4 days now!) But I have found that they are very needy (but who can resist) very fearless (thank God I have a patient St. Bernard) and poop and sleep a lot (hmm... reminds me of my son when he was a baby!) I paid $500 for her (still no name!) but I got her from a friend of mine who sold her at wholesale. Normally these darling little critters go for $1000 or more and the mixes about the same (yorkiepoo, yorktese...) I think the cost is not only because they are small and adorable (if that isn't enough!) But that they also are one of the few breeds that don't shed. Good luck in finding a yorkie!!! |
Hi! Oscar was $700, but the prices in my area tend to be $1000 or more. I have a couple coats, t-shirts, and sweaters for him. They are cute and functional. He gets cold on the chilly days... I walk him in a harness, as a collar makes him choke. Sometimes I carry him in a Louis Vuitton Sac Chien carrier (the one item I really splurged on :( ). My favorite time with him though doesn't involve the clothes or carrier--it's when he and I snuggle in bed just before going to sleep. I wouldn't trade it for anything :wub: |

Yorkie's are the best I had a pug for 7 years until he passed away last year. Getting a new dog was very emotional for me but after a lot of thought, I decided on a yorkie. it is the best thing I have ever done! I've only had him for 2 weeks but he is already paper trained and is now learning sit and come. He loves to play and when he falls asleep in my lap it is the best thing. He gets a little tweaked out being in the carrier - I can't wait to be able to take him on the leash. They are a lot of effort, daily grooming, making sure they eat and just making sure you don't step on them, but already he is my new best little friend and he is lovely. I would definitely suggest this breed for a pet and I paid $1500 for him which seems to be the going rate. |
Hi & welcome! I have 2 (a boy & a girl) and I dress them both up ALL the time. They hate me (just kidding LOL). Yorkies are so much fun because you can dress them up and be cutesie with them or you can run & play with them (they are pretty athletic) so you get the best of both worlds! Good luck!! |
I bought my Yorkie for $650. I didn't do much research on the breed before I bought him. I didn't know of such things as luxating patellas or collapsing tracheas. Wish I would have. Bennett doesn't have a collapsing trachea (thank god) but he did have two luxating patellas. The first one he had operated on at 8 months. The other was just 3 weeks ago. He also slightly tore a ligament. This leg is going to take a bit longer to heal because of the torn ligament. If and when you buy your puppy, please look into the health of the parents. It is an inherited disease and you could save yourself thousands of $$$$. I wouldn't give my boy up for anything. In fact, I'd LOVE another. My BF has a Cocker who gets along with him very well. I think having 3 dogs in the house would be a little to much to handle right now. I also want a Great Dane...lol. I can see it now...walking with a Yorkie, Cocker and a Dane. :D Look into health insurance from the AKC if your puppy is registerd with them. It could save you $$$$$ in vet bills in the long run. Hi there! I think the price depends on where you buy the dog. In the NYC tri-state area, you're looking at 1800-2500. scary, but true. However, Yorkies are very popular in New York, so we're definitely paying a premium. I've heard about folks in other states paying significantly less -- like 50% less!! I definitely dress Mojito up. He seems to like the sleeveless shirts best -- they don't slow him up when he's running! We have a little sailor shirt/outfit, a little von Dutch muscle tee and a couple of other little shirts as well. We'll definitely be getting him some fall and winter clothes, though! (I have my eye on this really cute down coat for the cold weather!) As for the carrier, yup. I sure do carry him around in it. He's pretty good in it. Just be sure you get a harness for him and that the carrier has a strap that hooks on to the harness. (He tried to hop out on me once and thank goodness for the harness and bag strap -- it saved his little neck!) Best of luck! Irmi & Mojito |
Hi, Around here Yorkies are not that popular of a breed because we have a lot of the "great outdoors" and bigger more sturdy dogs are in demand. So I was very lucky to only have to pay $400 for my boy. He is AKC, and I met both of his parents and maternal grandparents. He is in great health, and I only put clothes on him when it was cold, he didn't like them very much. They are a lot like having a child, have great personalities and are very very intelligent. I have been lucky training Jack, but he is a real "boy" and gets into everything. NEVER leave underwear or socks lying around, they love them. If you ahve lots of patience and lots of love to give you will be a good Yorkie Mom. |

Jocelyn, I imagine the last thread was meant for me. No my breeder doesn't have any more yet. She doesn't breed very often. If you really shop around, and make sure that you investigate the breeder you should be able to find a pup that meets your price range. Where are you located, and maybe some of us a YT can keep out ears and eyes open. |
Hi and best wishes to you in finding yourself a yorkie! I have a yorkie named Maddie and dress her up a lot. I've been doing it since she was a baby, so she is used to it and doesn't mind it at all. I do carry her in a dog purse. If I tell her, "Let's go bye bye," she runs to her purse and jumps in. Good luck in finding a yorkie...getting Maddie is the best thing I've ever done! |
