Brownie wears one 24/7 hes got a tag that has his vets number since were always changing it |
collars My dogs do wear collars in the house, but when I leave the house I don't leave collars on them when they are alone. My male dog loves to sit directly on the heat register. A couple of times he got his tags hung up in the metal slats of the vent. He probably would have choked to death had I not heard him squirming and thrasing around. So, be careful! |
[QUOTE=Gingergirlsmom;930698] I would be DEVASTATED if either of them were lost!!!! Microchips are great, but unless the person who finds them takes them into a shelter for a scan, useless. You hit the nail on the head with this one. Tags/micro chips are only as good as the honesty in the finder. If someone truly is stealing your dog, it doesn't matter. My dogs don't get to leave the house. We live on acreage so no people walking by. If someone did happen onto our property the Germ. Shep. would never let them near any of the dogs. None of the dogs get to ride in the car with me as I have too many. So no collars, I.D. for me. |
Hmmmm, some things to think about that is for sure. Bailey wears a collar with her name in bling letters :D , I have an ID tag on her with her name and my cell number. I also have her microchipped. She always wears her collar, I like the jingle sound her tags make so I know where she is at. She has ran right out our front door a couple of times, having a collar on her makes me feel secure. She wears a harness when we go for walks or in the car. The harness has an ID Tag on it also. Home again microchip doesn't charge you to update your address, we have moved a couple of times in the past 5 years. You just call and they update everything. They only charge $18.00 for the initial registation. |
Mine always wear their collars w/their ID tags w/my phone and address on one side and on the other "If I'm Alone, I'm Lost" "Call my owner (my name here)". I sometimes take them off at night when they're cuddled into bed and give them doggie massages :) |

There are so many collar options out there I can't believe that so many dogs don't wear collars. I just ordered Loki a Tazlab collar that I'm really excited about. And there are nylon martingales that can be VERY loose unless you attach a leash to it and then they can't slip it off. But if they get caught they can get out of the collar. Loki's collar w/ tags is on him 24/7. Even when I bathe him I stick it in my pocket and then put it right back on him after I blow dry him. When it's warm out we go out for 1-2 walks a day plus we don't have a fence so he is outside on a leash to potty too. I can't imagine trying to always make sure his tags are always with me when we go out. |
All of mine have all their tags on them all the time. I am so worried about them running out the door or getting loose so to be safe they wear their tags all the time. They have their license tag, name tag which has our address and number on it, rabies tag and a "if lost" tag. |
Excellent thread.... You can always come up with a downside to wearing a harness or collar with tags, but as far as I am concerned, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. If you are concerned about getting hung up on something, there are breakaway collars. Edie chewed her harness when she was young, but she outgrew that....I just kept buying harnesses as she went through them. Both of my dogs are chipped AND they wear a tag with my cell no. on it....They wear these AT ALL TIMES. I am not taking chances. |
I always keep Chloe's collar on--except when I'm bathing her, and it goes on before she's allowed walk around again. I don't walk her on her collar though. I use a harness for that. The collar I use just to have something to keep her tags on. She is also microchipped, but the tattoo thing sounds like a good idea. Where do they get tattooed? If the collar is sized properly, they can't get it in their mouths to chew on. There should only be enough room to slide two fingers underneath. Now the harness is another story. I just bought a new one last week and she's already chewed through it. And she doesn't even wear that all the time! |
