What am I supposed to do with these hairs? I really want Cali to have the cute topknot, so I'm not going to cut the top of her hair. But, what happens with these hairs coming from around her nose area? They kinda fan out and go everywhere, mostly in her eyes. Should I trim that part, or just leave them alone? They seem to make her eyes water all the time. I do want her to have a small beard (is that what it's called?) when she's older. Everytime I look at her face, all I see is (wild) hair. |
Sorry I can't answer you.I would be interested in the answers though. Your description describes Ellie spot on:D |
This can be a frustrating time - trying to grow out the hair, but keep it out of her eyes. The stray hairs should be smoothed down on either side of the muzzle, and can be kept down with a small amount of hair gel. Use the gel also on the hairs that should be part of the topnot and aren't long enough yet. This is what I did, others may have better ideas. If you trim them, they'll grow back and your faced with the same problem. So, you either keep them trimmed or deal with them until they grow out more. |
I was trying to let Hannah's grow out, but it got in her eyes so bad that I cut them. |
You can use a moose to slick them back, or buy tiny clips to hold them up while they are going out. |

i use human gel on Brownie i think theres topknot gel made for dogs |
I use human hair gel, also shampoo and conditioner sometimes. |
Thank you very much both of you for such a fast reply. |
Gel doesn't dry their hair out? I know it has a lot of drying agents. Also, how long does it take for the hair to be long enough to actually start turning down on it's own? |
I don't think the small amount of gel you use will dry the hair excessively. It hasn't on Ruby. The time it takes to grow out can be different depending on how fast your yorkies hair grows. Ruby is 13 mos. old and most all of her hair is long enough now to either go up in the topnot or smoothed down over her muzzle. She has never had it cut since I got her at 5 mos. old. I don't know if the breeder had cut it before, but I don't think so. |
I feel your pain! My 6 month old pups always have the stray hairs sticking out. I put the topknot closer to the eyes and use a pet product called "Top Knot Gel" made by Petsilk. It still does not stay all day and sometimes only a few minutes. Just have to wait for the hair to grow for the best results. |
Don't use human moose on the dogs hair. I will only dry the hair even more. #1 All Systems has a dog grooming gel made for this. http://mjmcompany.com/1allsystems-grooming.htm |
You can put a little vaseline on with a toothbrush too. |
I've never used human mousse on Ruby's hair, but I know it does dry out my hair. I don't use much of the gel on her, and have not had any problems with the hair being dry or any damage. |
