Disappointed... I feel like I want to do something more with my life. I work at home and need to fill up some of my time and heart to something more... I decided to look into a rescue group and see if I could be of some help somehow. I found the "perfect" group for me. It rescues small breed dogs only and that is just perfect. I sent in my request for a volunteer application last night and could barely sleep...I know not exciting to some but WONDERFUL to me... Today I got a reply that I dont qualify for foster. There is a profile of other volunteers on the site...one lady who lives near me has two kids and two dogs and does plenty for them..I have three kids and three dogs so I guess that disqualifies me. Talk about feeling defeated...I only want to help to add something to my life and the life of homeless animals and I cant even do that. Lately life just feels so unfullfilling...I am trying to work outside the home, I work now in the home and take care of a mentally handicapped woman full time (she lives with us) but I feel disconnected from the outside world..I thought getting involved in something like this would connect me to other people who are like me... Sorry for the pity party...im just really bummed... Dawn |
I'm sorry:( that doesn't seem fair that having one more dog and one more child would disqualify you:( I'm sure that there are other things you can do. What about a literacy program, or help with seniors, or something like that? Human society? Big hugs!:girl_hug: |
I don't know if this is what you had in mind but I believe if you go to www.volunteermatch.org they list places where they need help by zip code..... Wishing you luck in finding some thing you may find fulfilling:) |

Sorry about that , I didn't notice where you where:) |
There is nothing wrong with a pity party..just don't stay long! Been to a few myself. Is it possible to do what I did some years ago. I spoke to the local vets and told them I was willing to take in a toy rescue from time to time...several vets contacted me with rescues. They checked them out first and made sure there were not contagious. Do you have any free time away from home..? IF so the Humane Places have volunteers..good luck |
I am not sure how I feel about rescue agencies. They disqualify the perfect people to foster these animals or adopt them. They have too rigid of standards! I was going to rescue a yorkie and pay $600 for it (can't remember the sex anymore) and I applied, talked to the woman and was disqualified because I work full time. I think its ridiculous that I went to a breeder, bought 2 puppies for only $150 more and none of the run around and millions of questions and home checks randomly once a month, etc... Also my pups were pups when I got them, healthy (not sick like the rescue puppy I was going to adopt who needed medical care for life) I feel that just bc I work full time does not mean that I would not provide a GREAT warm loving home to a rescue dog! I understand they don't want them back and that is why they are so strict, but like I said ... I went and BOUGHT 2!! What if my 2 end up there? I think they need to re-evaluate their standards bc Im SURE you would make a wonderful WONDERFUL foster home to any animal and its too bad they are too strict to understand and see that! and (at least in my area) how many families can actually get away on one income?? Most homes have 2 full time working adults, so that elimates TONS of potentially good home candidates. I don't know if this is possible in your area, but in my area, private schools will let almost anyone substitute for classes and pay them $10/hr. You get called in last minute and its only the length of a school day. Maybe you could look into something like that. I think you need to get your certification here through the town hall or something. I think public schools are more strict on sub teachers but private schools, you just need to watch the classes for duration! Good Luck! Im sure you'll find something fulfilling and meaningful to do! |
I have been trying to volunteer at the Humane Society 30 minutes away by streetcar, the nearest to where I live..so far, they can only put me up for the 11pm on Sunday night and I can't. Its not a very safe area and its too late at night. I wish they would just give me a decent time slot. I really don't mind washing the small animal cages or bathing/feeding or just playing with them.I really can feel what you are feeling. I have been 'hibernating' for about 9 months now and being a newcomer, I am not allowed to work just yet.Sometimes, I really hope this would all be over soon. |
sorry - I reread my response, just want to say Sorry if I offended anyone! I think the rescue agencies are great for RESCUE situations, just not for placing situations. I see so many cute faces on their sites that I would love to rescue one, but like i said, I am not qualified! Anyways, I did not mean to offend, I have just personally dealt with the defeat of this myself and know that it is a bummer! |
Hi Dawn, A lot of rescue groups will show their rescue dogs at local pet stores on weekends in search of forever homes. I don't know if they do this in Canada or if you want to work weekends but often they are looking for volunteers to help out. |

I showed my application to another Humane Soc employee at a different location (downtown) and she said it was an ideal application. She offered to find me a puppy on the spot and even showed me some dogs that were not available for public view yet. Unfortunately, none of them were small which is what I wanted as a companion for my yorkie. I already mentioned this on another thread so sorry to repeat, but I am still bummed about it and it was 3 years ago. I will probably never apply to adopt another rescue dog again after that. |
