What's your take on this? Well my little Bella is 21 1/2 weeks old now and is still really small (she is 2.5 lbs) I picked her because she was the biggest in her litter (she was 1.7 lbs at 12 weeks) but she just hasn't grown that much. Well this is my problem. My vet that I always see thinks she will not get big enough to have puppies safely which is fine but, the other vet in the office is telling me that she will probably be somewhere between 8 and 9 lbs. Who should I believe???? I was planning on having her fixed but now I don't know what I should do. Anyone out there who knows what I should expect? Thanks so much! |
I definitely think she is going to be tiny. They all grow differently but if she is 21.5 weeks old and only 2.5 lbs...I think she will be little bitty. good luck!! :) |
Unless she takes a HUGE growing spurt, it sounds lie she wil remain quite small. |

I agree with the above. Jewel was the largest out of her litter and she only got to be 3.5 pounds... 21 weeks and under 2.5 sounds like you have got a very petitte girl. |
I really feel like she is not going to get much bigger either. I thought when I got her she would be big enough to have pups but I think I should just come to grips with the fact that she is going to be tiny and can NEVER have puppies. Oh well, I wouldn't be able to sell them anyway!;) |
If she was any of y'alls, would you get her fixed or leave her be. Would it be safe to have such a small puppy fixed? Jack is fixed so I don't have to worry about him bothering her. |
If your not sure about the surgery why not just wait a little while until she is a bit older and bigger. I have a petite male (adult weight is 3.4lbs) and I waited to have him fixed as long as I could because he was so tiny. I was scared to death of losing him from complications with anesthesia so I waited until he got a little bigger. He had the surgery done later than normal and was lazy for 1 day and then he was back to his normal self. It didn't even seem to phase him. We thankfully had no problems. Can you wait with females or do they have to be neutered by a certain age/maturity? Good luck with your little girl! She sounds precious. |
The reason they prefer to spay a female before they have their first heat is that their reproductive organs remain puppy size until that time. The surgery is a lot less invasive when the organs are very tiny. Cricket was 3 lbs. 4 oz. at 20 weeks old and at 7 monthes is still only 3 lbs. 10 oz. We're praying she gets large enough to breed but it's not looking too good. I could almost guarantee your baby won't reach 5 lbs. Talk to your vet about the safest way to get her spayed. Ask him about the increased risk of reproductive cancers and weigh the issues before making your decision. Good luck with your little one. |
Thanks for your response. I think I will talk to my vet (the one that has seen her since a puppy) and see what he thinks. I really want to do what is best for her. She is such a little sweetie! We really love her! |
We just had our chi spayed and she is 1lb 12oz. She was 18 mos old and we were not going to spay her because of the fear of the anesthesia, but when she got her first period, we said never again and were sorry we didn't spay her sooner. She also had 2 sets of teeth, so we did the spay and removed the baby teeth at the same time. The vet said he spays kittens and bunnies her size and smaller and she'd be fine and she was. |
I'll probably be slammed for this one.... I only have one male dog and he is fixed. I haven't fixed any of my females. My Germ. Shep. I breed her occais. but don't own the stud anymore. He is local though, so we go for a visit. Otherwise, all my females go into heat but no one to bother them. With my little Chin, he was in and out and by the next day doing great. I have never wanted to risk surgery for the females when I considered it unneccessary. If you male is fixed I wouldn't worry about it. Going into heat doesn't hurt animals like so many claim. |
Lucy was fixed when she was only 2 pounds. I was worried, but my vet was not. She said they fix other types of smaller animals. I really trusted her. Lucy was fine. Also, Lucy was 2 pounds until she was 8 months then she grew only another pound and a half. We thought she would be 5+ pounds. But we were never going to breed her anyway. |
