Grooming Question Hello everyone!! I'm new to the forum and have enjoyed looking at all your adorable photos. As soon as I have time, I'll post pics of my new baby boy. My question is how do you get your dogs used to being brushed? I've had other dogs in the past that I never had a problem brushing, but my new yorkie HATES it! I'm on my second brush because I read somewhere on here to test the brush on your armpit to see how it feels. Any way, any advice is appreciated. I do try to brush in small doses, but it really drives Chewie crazy. Other than this, my little guy is near perfect! :) |
:welcome4: I try this with little ones. Wait until evening when they're just about ready for nighty night. Just start trying to get him to lay on his back or side and go over him like you're brushing with your hand. Then start to use the brush. Also it's a good time to handle his feet and toes to get used to grooming there. Even if you just get one light pass of the brush the first night it's worth it. Good Luck. |
I try to brush them once a day. I use Cheerios and give them a few as I brush with lots of praise. Start out with just a few brush strokes and build up to more. Good Luck! |
well it is all about just doing it :p i agree with the night time thing.. when layla had hair.. before her haircut... she got brushed by grandma at night time when she was pooped out and she ended up falling asleep while being brushed.. but until you can get there... maybe have someone hold treats and feed him with TONS Of praise and just doing short little sessions... keep to friendly areas like the back.. layla HATES having her face and paws done.. but it just has to be done :) good luck and keep at it! |
Daisy used to hate being brushed when she was a puppy. She would bite at the brush and I couldn't brush her. On the other hand, TeddyBear Loved being brushed. After awhile I guess Daisy realized that if TeddyBear likes it maybe it isn't too bad. She actually started to really like being brushed. Now whenever I try to brush TeddyBear, Daisy butts in and pushes him away so I can brush her. LOL I guess "jealousy" was what worked for me. |
I started Venus out early, as soon as I brought her home. I also brushed her daily too. She's used to it now, and will fall asleep in my lap when I groom her now. |
Teeth Brushing Anybody have any tricks for brushing teeth? My little guy HATES it! So we strugle with him every other night to get his teeth clean. We use chicken flvored tooth paste that he loves the taste of. He cleaverly tries to lick it all off the toothbrush and then go hide somewhere! We started brushing his teeth when he was 8 weeks old and he hated it then and still does. We try to keep this a very positive experience and give lots of praise, but its not making the struggle any easier. I have heard about teeth cleaning pads for yorkies that come in a jar and are pre-moistened. Maybe that would be easier. Has anybody used these? How are they? |
What type of Brush?? I've been brushing Mattie at night too when he has played out and it seems to be easier. But I was wondering what type of brush does everyone use?? I've been working with a cat brush because it has soft bristles. Should I be using something else. |
Thanks for the feedback!! I took the advice of waiting to brush until Chewie was ready to sleep. IT WORKED!! He just laid there and didn't really try to fight me. THANKS for the advice!! |
glad it worked for you,.. and welcome |
