I only want to add that I think an older puppy would be easier to handle a working schedule. The younger they are the more they need, just like babies - for sure. Best of luck to you. What a joy these little (and some, not so little) ones bring. |
another suggestion.... Do not go for one that is too small. They are A LOT more work and they need you to be there with them all the time. Hypoglycemia is a major problem and really scary! I know we all love the tiniest lilttle baby but it isnt worth the stress!!! and trust me you will love one a little bigger just as much |
I suggest you read the forum on here about training and notice how many people have problems potty training. Our puppy did go outside when we got her, but if we didn't take her out, she peed every place, even tho we kept her on a leash all the time. She has gotten pretty good at going on the potty pad after two months, but still for no reason it seems like, she'll pee randomly somewhere else every so often. Or she'll miss the potty pad. That's not really her fault since the potty pad lays flat on the floor, she sniffs it and then tries to aim for it, but her aim isn't all that great each time, probably because she doesn't know exactly where the edge is in relationship to her little private spot. |

You said you would be living with your mom - is she willing to help with training, care, etc. while you're at work? |

I'm home all day now with my daughter and dogs, but when I worked and first got my chihuahuas, they stayed in a play pen during the day that had a pee pad on one side and a blanket with a few toys on the other. They did great. I think a lot of members here do that with their yorkies during the day, so I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the same. It sounds like you're doing a lot of research. I think that you can do it as long as you're willing to put the time and effort into everything owning a dog takes. I'm home full time with three puppies and find it challenging... and my life has changed a lot. I can't go out whenever I want, I can't stay out for long periods of time without arrangements for my dogs, I can't travel as much. Also, they are ALWAYS more expensive to care for than you think they are... so that is another thing to take into account. I've had to put off buying things for myself to put towards vet care, grooming, things they need. I'm NOT saying this to scare you at all, or to try to get you to not get a puppy.. I'm just being honest. These sacrifices are ones that I've been happy to make because I get so much joy from having my dogs. They have really made me so happy and made my life whole. I just think you should really consider the long term commitment that these little lives are and then just honestly see if you can handle that :) Good luck w/your decision!! |
