Another Goofy Question Okay. One more goofy question.... I was finally able to get the steps to work so Sassy could get on the bed. We've been sleeping on the couch because I was afraid she would jump off the bed and it's really high. Anyway.... Last night she decided she wanted under the covers all the way down by my feet. I let her stay there for a little bit but then became concerned that she would smother. I have top covers consisting of a sheet, electric blanket (turned off) and a comforter. When I got her out, she went right back. I finally convinced ehr to sleep up at the top so she would have fresh air. Comments? |
Carley does this every morning after my husband takes her out at 5:00 am. She crawls under the covers and down by my stomach and sleeps there for the next 3 hours. I have flannel sheets and a down comforter (I get cold too) and she is always fine. If it got to "close" feeling they will come back up for air, I think. I don't she will smother, but if YOU can't sleep cause you are worried, maybe you could just cover her up with one of her small blankets, so she gets that totally covered feeling and you dont worrry. |
I think she will be ok. I have a Chihauhua that loves to be under the covers. If she wants out and can't get out she will scratch or whine until we get the covers untucked. But, trust your own instincts....you will know what is right for your little one. |
You did the right thing making her come back up. Someone on here let their yorkie sleep under the covers and it died |
lexi goes all the way down by my feet under the covers... can they really smother????? there has to be some air down there right? |
the frankster likes to go down there and nibble on my toes. but he comes back up and sleeps at me feet but on top of the covers. i dont know if its dangerous but i would be all freaked thinkning he would smother. |
Both of mine sleep under the covers every night. I know that someone on the board lost their dog while sleeping under the covers - but I really feel that there was something else, unknown, wrong with the baby. All my life I have had cats and dogs who have slept completely underneath the covers and have never had a problem. Of course, I could be wrong - and every one certainly has to do what they think is best. |
Buddy won't even let me cover him? We had a terrier mix when the kids were small and Teddy would go under the covers and go all the way down to the bottom of the bed and sleep by my son's feet all night. He did that for years and never smothered! Carol & Buddy |

I don't like Bailey to sleep under the covers, so I made her her own blanket that is on top of our comforter and cover her up with that. |
I've had other little one's that would go all of the way to the foot of the bed and sleep. Never had a problem. The only concern I would have with your situation is the electric blanket. Even though it is turned off I would be concerned because yours is a puppy and there is a possibility;) that it might urinate on the bed. I think I would unplug it for total safety. I'm probably just being paranoid though.:D |
Both of mine love to go under the covers -but we had to put away the elec blanket because I caught Chico trying to chew on the wires. |
Thank you, everyone, for your input. I think the reason it scares me under the covers is if the oxygen in the air under there isn't replenished, that's when I think smothering would ocurr. I remember when I was a child, I couldn't breathe very long under the covers without coming up for air. Once I had gotten her out of there a couple of times, she stayed out and I felt better for it. She does have her own blanket on the bed. I think maybe it was the novelty of it for her. I am not afraid of the electric blanket, though. Although I have only had her for a couple of weeks, she is a year old and she hasn't peed on the couch where we were sleeping. As a matter of fact, she hasn't peed in the den where we spend most of our time. Just in all the other areas. :( ALL the other areas. |
Mine loves to sleep under the covers, sometimes at my feet, sometimes snuggled up to my legs. I was worried at first about his smothering, too, but he's a year old now and hasn't smothered yet! He can sleep there for hours without moving -- I think it makes him feel secure. |

Muffin loves to sleep under the covers too. We actually sleep kind of belly-to-belly. There are nights that she comes out from under for awhile but she always goes back under eventually. She's been sleeping like this for over a year and there has never been a problem. I think that she too feels more secure when she sleeps up against me. |
Mazie is a burrower! When we got her (at nine months) her previous owner told us that she liked to sleep with her head under her blanket. When she started sleeping with us, she soon wanted to sleep under our blankets, too. I'm not thrilled with her being under ALL of them, as I feel it's too heavy and "close". But the comforter on top is light enough that I don't feel like I have to worry about her smothering if she just goes under that. She has become quite adept at jumping on the bed, running to the head of it, flipping up the edge of the comforter with her nose, and then tunneling down to our feet where she likes to sleep. :D |
Mine sleeps under the covers also. I normally just have a sheet over me tho. If it's cold enough (live in Fl) and I use a blanket also, I make sure that the edges are loose so if she wants to come out she can easily. And I leave an area with the blanket pulled back. I always figure if I leave everything loose that air gets in. In other words I just make sure I'm not laying on the edge of the covers trapping her in and possibly not letting air get underneath. |
Thanks all. I do have a baby blanket that is hers for her to sleep with on the bed. I think she has accepted that she won't be allowed way down there, but it's okay if she does it at the very top. Although I wouldn't mind it if that's what she wants, it would just worry me way too much to let her stay under there. I would never get any sleep worrying about what I might find in the morning.:( So we have resolved it and she seems to be okay with it. I just snuggle her next to me and if she wants to venture just a little ways in, that's okay. |
