Any good neutering experiences? I need for people to tell me all their good experiences with getting thier dogs fixed. I need to get all my dogs fixed but I am too scared because I dont read anything but bad experiences on this website. I heard dogs live longer if they are fixed, is this true? I want to get my fixed regardless, but I am too afraid they are going to die because of the anethesia or something horrible will happen during the surgery. I just read another sad story about the dog that got the really bad burns. Who would have even thought that could happen? The only dog that I have had fixed had a seizure during the surgery. So I need some MAJOR pep talk and good stories please! |
Our Yorkie (we won't mention any names here ;)) was fixed when he was around 6 months old. It went fine. We made sure the vet had worked with smaller dogs before and that they were well aware of what they were doing. He got fixed and had teeth pulled out at the same time, so that they would only need to anesthesize him once. He was sort of sad for a day or so, and very groggy and down (not much activity, which is unlike him). However, he jumped back to normal after a day and a half or so, and was fine after that. Neutering your boy is good for them, it can help them not run away when they smell a female in heat in your neighborhood. I think he became better with potty training after he was fixed as well. While I'm sure everyone emphasizes problems when getting neutered or fixed, just remember that most people do fix their Yorkies, and it's a good thing. Most will have no problems at all during the procedure. :) |
Zsa Zsa was spayed at 6 months , she weighted 3 pounds . Jade have been spayed at 1 year , she weight 4 pounds 6 oz , both are well . My vet always use Isoflurane gaz . They never have been burn at all . |
I've only kept one dog whole and she died of mammary cancer that spread to her womb I really regretted that decision to keep her whole. All my others have been neutered and lived happy healthy lives best decisions we made. |
I am there with you ........ Maximus is only 3 months now...but I am already preparing mentally for the neuturing process although I don't believe it will be for 3-4 more months...I am uncomfortable with him staying at the vets overnight and have spoken to my vet several times about this..but he says that it will make him (Maximus) the most comfortable and so..I am preparing myself for how I will handle him being away for a day while he doesn't feel good :( ........ I know it is necessary but I am afraid too but I have done my homework and listened to others...thanks to this site and I know what to ask the vet and I will make sure that he has the smallest possible tube (especially since he may have a collapsed trachea..I will find out defintiely on Sat.) and I made sure that my vet had done this procedure many times with little dogs.. in the end we are doing the best for our furbabies |
I adopted Duke when he was 12 months old, and he had not yet been neutered. Duke only weighs four pounds, so I made certain to find a vet that had plenty of experience neutering furbabies that were that small. Duke was a trooper and pulled through with flying colors! The vet sent me home with antiboitics and pain medication that was to be administered twice a day for seven days, and Duke did not give us any trouble at all! The pain meds made him sleep more than usual, but the vet said that was the whole idea. He wanted to make sure that Duke was comfortable and did not want to lick his wounds. Duke didn't need an Elizabethan collar, and I am sure that that made his recovery easier for him because he didn't have that huge disc around his neck. Duke had a bit of swelling and some brusing, but the vet said that was completely normal because of his size. As long as you make certain that the vet you chose has experience with little one's like ours, you should not have any problem at all. |
We were worried also when we had Sophie spayed when she was 6 months of age. We heard the horror stories, too, but it helps if you can try to take control of the situation. Research vets if you don't already have a good one, talk to other dog owners, etc. I don't know where you live and how many other dog owners you come in contact with every day (I live in NY and sometimes I think there are more dog owners here than non-owners), but other dog owners can be very helpful with referrals (as they are on this forum too). Get all the advance info you can to make an informed decision about where you'll take your pup, have a consultation with the vet about procedures, post-op care, what to look out for, whatever you can do to get yourself informed and put your mind at ease. We took Sophie to Hope Veterinary Clinic in Brooklyn, and she came through the surgery just fine. In fact, she perked up earlier than the vet told us she would. We were given that little "elizabethan" collar to put on Sophie so she wouldn't lick the wound, but we didn't even need it. Sophie was back to her old self in less than 24 hours. |
Sammi was spayed at 7 months...At the same time had an iniguial hernia repaired...She came home with me that night and was out of it until 1pm the next day...Of course as soon as she came to she wanted to jump all over :) My vet also gave us that collar, but I did not keep it on her... |
Neutering I wont lie and say Simon didn't give me some dirty looks for a week or so, but lol it went fine and he was about a year old when I rescued him. He still walks like they are there haha but had no complications at all. Jeni |
My yorkie hasn't been neutered yet, but he has been through some major surgery involving removing bladder stones and searching for a liver shunt. He was in surgery for about 1.5-2 hours, and he was fine, so don't worry too much :) He has recovered beautifully... |

I was wondering about the overnight thing too since the vets here do not require that. Is there someone with him during that time? Maybe you could get a second opinion to make yourself feel better. |
We had Pookie neutered when he was six months old, and he was back to his old self in a few hours without any problems. We had Boo Boo spayed when she was six months old, she spent the night at the vets and was back to normal within a day or two. I'm very glad we had Boo Boo spayed when we did. The vet said her reproductive organs weren't normal and would have had to come out anyway. If you spay a dog before she reaches her first estrus cycle, it will completely eliminate the possibility of mammary cancer. |
Luig was also nutered when he was 6 monthes and he didi great!!!! When the dr. called me to tell me how he did, I was able to hear him in the back ground and he was as feisty as ever. She couldn't believe how percky he was. He too had teeth pulled-9 to be exact!!- and was microchpped too. He did sleep the rest of the night when we got home til morning, then he awoke and was back to normal!! I don't think it even fazed him. I couldn't keep him from jumping and stuff. But my vet also did some blood work and some other tests before surgery to make sure all his "stuff" was normal!!!! I was nervous too but trust your vet- he will be fine!!! ;) |
