Help Please!!! It has been months since I have posted. I quit posting I felt like all I did was complain. My yorkie Champ is 8 months old. Our problems with him are not getting any better, only worse. I think he is just a pup, he will grow out of all of this, well he's not. First of all, he will not potty train. We take him outside all the time and reward him when he does potty. I have one room in my house, that I now call my poop room that he likes to poop all over. I also caught him cocking his leg on my couch, too. It gets worse. He does not like to be held or petted. I really just want to love him and he wants no part of it. When we try to pet him or hold him, he bites us. I don't mean chewing, he trys to bite the blood out of us, and he growls viciously at us. He has broke our skin a couple times. My husband is getting very upset. We have two children, and we just wanted a loving dog to be a part of our family. Don't you enjoy giving your dog love, it is heart breaking that we can't. He also chews through every cord in our house, which is costing us alot of money. My husband wants to get rid of him. I just wish we could get him to change. Do we have the meanest yorkie in the world? |
I don't know how much advice I can give you, but I have been told that an 8 month old is like having a 2 year old toddler. |
Your yorkies temperment is more the exception than the rule. I really think he needs a positive personal trainer. Best of luck. I know it must be frustrating. I have a child to and dont know what I would do If I were in your position. I know I would give training a shot before rehoming |
Hi, I am sorry your dog is having behavior problems.:( Have you had him checked at your vet's lately to make sure he is healthy? The next I would do if all is well, is take him to Dog Training classes. I would also start putting belly bands on him, several members here make and sell them. They will help stop the marking on your rug and furniture. I hope this helps a bit...other members will have some other ideas...Good Luck! |
I am sorry that you are going though so much with this little guy. IMO I think he is bored and has no training regarding what not to do and what is ok to do. I found that Buddy was pretty much the same way as a pup and I spent hours of training and one on one time with him. This is a nessessity as far as I am concerned. They must understand that you are the boss/alpha over them or they will not respect you. This sounds like it is the case. Unless you change your attitude and become the alpha and enforcer to this little terror he will not change. He has taken over because no one said he couldn't. Good luck and if you train him like you would your children things should get better. Carol & Buddy |
Have you heard of NILIF? (Nothing in life is free) A lot of people were able to train their dogs this way. You have to show him you are the boss, for everything he gets he has to sit, dinner time? make him sit for it, walks? He has to sit first etc. Leash him to your jeans. When he growles tell him a loud firm no. Google NILIF, also clicker training works wonders. Good luck with the lil guy. I wonder if he was handled by the breeder at all.... |
Dog whisperer? LOL |
abby's mom makes a great suggestion. you need to retrain him so that he knows your are boss, not him. do some research on NILIF, positive training, and clicker training. Also try calling a personal trainer that will go to your house so she can see champ in action in his own environment. |

Seriously though, it sounds like there's something deeper going on here than just normal puppy misbehaving. Like the others have said, I would have him checked at the vet first then try a trainer. I'm sure he'll be turned around in no time, because he's still young. Good luck! |
I think, just my opinion..I will get him vet checked then if he is healthy, then try the proffesional doggie trainer and then if it doesn't work, I would rehome him if I have two kids and have no further time to train him but the new home should be someone who knows and understands his condition and experienced enough to take him in. People with no doggie experience will have a hard time with him even with dog trainer's help. Just what I feel. As for cord chewing, has all the cords been sprayed with Bitter Apple? Spray lots and lots, try spraying some white vinegar too on top of the bitter apple. Has his poop room floor/carpet been deep clean with a suitable liquid formula to get rid of all the old poop/pee smell? Its a lot of work to get the old smell to go away but its certainly worth it for training purpose because if the old smell is there, he will certainly repeat his business there. My friend has even thrown away her carpet to train her dog and another friend deep clean with concentrated formula with Bissell Pet Odour and Pet Stain Removal many times and eventually her dog learns to go outside now.Do update us of what happens. If I am near enough, I will consider taking him in because I seldom see anything like this and it intrigues me. |
that is aweful and you must be beside yourself. good luck and i hope everything works out for you |
We are not having problems with Sammie, but we are taking her to a professional trainer to get her ready for her Good Citizenship certification. The trainer mentioned owners that she has worked with in the past that had the very same problems you are experiencing. We were instructed not to bring our pups the first day of the class, because she wanted to train us first. And (as you can see from some of the responses above) she stressed how important it is for us to take the lead role in the house. You MUST be the alpha/boss dog! She was successful in helping these owners break ALL the bad habits after a 6 week training course. So definitely look for a good trainer in your area and get enrolled! Good luck and keep us all posted. |
You certainly have a challenging situation on your hands. It must be very frustrating to be dealing with his behavior when you are longing for an affectionate family dog. I agree with the trainer idea since it seems he is having some major issues that you may need expert advice about. I can't offer a lot of advice, I have an almost 7 month old puppy but some observations I have made are as follows: Potty training is challenging and sometimes one step forward and two back. My eye must be on him constantly and ready to intervene if he is not going in the right place. Also, trained in one area does not mean trained in the next room. The smaller the space they are in (I know this has been said many times on this sight and it is so true) the less likely they are to go where they are not supposed to. Also, my pup did not seem happy when my older teenage son brought a friend home with a loud, rowdy personality and I guess that is what they mean by sometimes this breed doesn't do as well with children. My yorkie did not like the loud voice and quick movements. I know they go through a second chewing phase and I noticed when my Yorkie is about to lose a tooth he is biting down harder on things, including fingers. I can tell that he is hurting in the mouth. As far as your pup not wanting to be held or petted, that just seems like a personality thing and there have been many posts about the differences in Yorkies here. As far as chewing the chords, my pup would chew what ever he could get his teeth on so I can't let him have access to anything. If he was able to access a chord, he would surely chew it. Just some thoughts since I am sure you are doing everything you can. Maybe he needs less freedom, a more confined space without anything that can get him into trouble. Maybe you need to have a "let's start over" attitude. Smaller space, calmer vibes, quieter children. Maybe he is picking up on the tension between the two of you and you could give him some positive vibes and kind of start over. Maybe he is just a difficult pup and you need professional help! I hope you can work something out. Good luck. |
Hi Your boy remind me of my yorkie?my even hates me :( We now takes a trainer, hope it will help. What I did?I know it?s not a good tip, but I bought a second dog and I am very happy. She is a totally opposite of him ? very loving and cuddly. Most yorkies I know are very cute?but sometimes, they have s**tty personality. We both had no luck :( |
