Can dogs get human colds? I currently have the sniffles... nothing bad... but I have limited the amount of time I have been playing with the pups to practically nothing till it goes away. (My wife takes care of the pups, so they are not being neglected). Any interaction I have with the dogs, I wash my hands first, and keep it short. What is the possibility of them catching something I have? Am I going to far with this, or...? |
They can certainly get what the vet calls, " upper respiritory infection," which to my mind is the same as a cold. Sometimes mine have ended up with the sniffles when I've been suffering with a cold. I think you're doing the best thing by trying to keep away from them, you can never be too careful with small puppies, no point taking unecessary risks. Especially with the hand washing, they say you catch most colds from picking up germs from door handles etc then touching your face! :( |
I've looked this up before on the internet. From what I remember they cannot catch a cold from a human. |
From what I have read dogs cannot catch diseases from humans. |
My vet said they cant |
Actually, I think it is a possibility. I have had warnings to be careful especially around small pups if I have a cold or flu. The warnings came from very long time +40 year breeders. I tend to err on the side of caution and follow what they tell me. I too, made sure I washed my hands and face before handling pups and tried to limit time as much as possible, made sure I wasn't snuffling even if I took cold medication to temper my symptoms a little bit. |
It is funny you ask this......My little Evie was scheduled for her surgery this past Monday and did not have it due to blood results coming back where her platelets were off and counts were off. Ends up he put her on some antibiotics and vitamins. I asked him then if she could have catched a cold from us. Because I noticed her sneezing the night before and like coughing. He said we (as vets) do not think so, but I have several clients who swear by it. It just so happens that my little girl (skin baby) has been sick since last week with a head cold. So go figure. My opinion is I think it may have had something to do with her getting sick. Courtney |
Dogs to not catch human diseases. However cats and humans share a lot of diseases. |
So, it's questionable on whether we can share our illnesses with our dogs BUT I have read here (and thought it was great insight) that you should keep in mind that if your dog licks you and gets your "sick germs", he/she can then go lick your spouse or kids and transfer those germs to them. That's another thing to keep in mind. |
