hugs & hang in there Amber - Edited to add - and see - Pipersmom has experience ....you aren't alone !! It sounds very similar to coccidia - but harder to treat.... |
Keep you chin up! Your poor little one. I did a bit of reading and this seems helpful: http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=739 It describes good hygiene methods for animals/humans to prevent infection. I would ask your vet about your yard regarding preventing future infections, since your dog must elimate there. Good luck I hope your little one can be cured! In humans it can be cured quite easily but can make children quite sick, and is problematic for those who are pregnant. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasi....htm#treatment Just work with your vet, and I'm sure things will work out! |

Amber, When I talked to my Vet & found out Piper had this intestinal disease, I was so upset also. Now I look at it as if she had a bad case of the flu. Misha never got this, so I'm not worried now. I didn't know they were a carrier for life, that means even if it isn't showing signs, or in the stool it could show up at a later time. Or pass it on to the pups if it's a female. After reading, it makes sense. I wouldn't worry to much about it. If you did deside to breed her in the future, just treat the pups. Maybe daisy got it from her mother, maybe that's why the breeder didn't know. Her mother carried it on to her pups. That's probably how Piper got it, since she was the only one sick. Hang in there, it will turn out alright. It turned out ok here. |
Oh my goodness Amber I am sooooooo sorry to hear that about you new baby, I read that you did contact the breeder but did she give you some type of health contract? I'm just sorry that you paid sooo much for this little pup and just to find out days later that it has something :( and now that adds more vets bills. Hang in there I don't know nothing about what Daisy has but I do hope it gets better.......Will say a prayer for ya'll tonight!! If you need someone to talk to feel free to PM me. |

When I got my second yorkie she was infected with coccidia. I had never even heard of it. It was just too difficult to keep her isolated from our other yorkie and beagle so I just practiced good hygiene and gave her her medicine religiously. Then when the medicine was done as a precaution I had all three dog's feces tested and no one else had contracted it. I think the thought that bodies carry things for life can just alarm us mentally when actually we are carriers of many things for life that never harm us again like for example chicken pox. Just be glad with treatment it can be managed and not be serious. The breeder I purchased my yorkie from actually informed me of the condition at the time of sale and I still chose to purchase her because I was not afraid of the condition after a little studying. |
Glad... I'm glad to be of help! I know this isn't a nice situation for you, but most likely things will go back to normal. This is quite a common parasite and most vets are able to deal with it. Sorry I haven't had first hand experience, but I'm sure other YT'ers have. Hang-in-there! |

Just to chime in with my experience...Cooper had it too when I got him...only could tell from the poop sample, no diarrhea or anything like that. We had him on treatment and we have never seen it again, no flare ups here. He tested negative for it fairly quickly too. So it seems really bad at first, but really it's not THAT bad. Our vet told us they can get it from streams or puddles of water or creeks, so never let them drink from these water sources. It will get better ;) |

I am so sorry that you are going through this ordeal, Amber. For those who don't know, I also got a puppy from this breeder, and thankfully he's fine. I will have the vet check the poop again when I bring him in for his rabies shot, just to make sure. After reading about giardia, it seems that the mother had it and passed it on to the puppies in her litter. This would explain why other puppies don't have it. I am sure that your little girl will be ok, Amber. Just hang in there and get some anti-bacterial soap in the meantime to make sure that you don't accidentally infect your babies (the two-legged ones :) ). I think it's also a good idea to get one of those soap-less antibacterial hand creams/whipes. Please keep us updated on this. |

Ok i just got off the phone with the vet and he said not all dogs will be carries some does carry it some don't. i told him how i don't pick up the poop in my yard and he said i need to change my way of thinking he said whether it's in you yard or not you should pick it up because diesease is so easily spread that way whether a dog is infected or not. He also told me that i should let her out of the play pen and be social so i will lol:thumbup: :D (no prob with that) he also said i have to wait a month to do another stool sample so i have a shot appt for her on the 1st of feb and her and Peeka will have their poop tested then. Thank you all for your support in this. I am so happy to hear this news that it is curable. |
OMG, you've had a rough couple days:( So glad that others on here were able to give you advice and encouragement. And yaaay - Daisy is out of quarantine:) You'll get through this soon and be able to help others when they get hit with it - so hang in there! |
Amber I just now read this thread. I'm glad it is sounding more encouraging for you. I know how news like that can just seem so overwheliming. I'm glad the others on here were able to help you put things in perspective. I had no idea this was so common. We all need to be more careful about community dog areas such as dog parks and interstate rest areas. As for the frozen poop. I have an ice scraper to loosen it if it freezes down too quickly. How about using as baggy to pick it up as soon as she goes, turn the bag inside out then scoop her up and go back inside. I hope all test are clear. |
