Yorkie's are the smartest terriers!
 

Everybody has been talking about how Yorkies have moved up to No. 2 on the AKC most popular breeds list, but I decided I wanted to know where they rank on the intelligence list. Turns out, not bad. They are the smartest terrier and No. 27 overall. Well, at least according to this list I googled:

Edited to add.......I don't get how cockers beat out yorkies - I have both ...and Tessa's (my Cocker) nickame is Tessa 'The CLUELESS' Toad Hunter lol she's SWEET As can be but def NOT a rocket scientist lol

I'm trying to cut back!!!LOL We are in training, trying to get Loudmouth Lottie to stop barking when she see's anyone, anydog, anylittler LOL. We are getting there but it is a work in progress. So treats are for silence!!LOL

hahahaha if I did that with Miss Chanel who has to bark at my new neighbor every time she sees him in HER backyard she'd catch on real quick that being loud gets her a yum (he's actually in his yard but it's HER turf in her mind)

Papillions #8??? Well then that Papillion in Dougal's agility class must have been the world's blondest papillion. She wandered off from her owner - while he was trying to get her to weave - then she saw the tunnel and you could see her think - O I like doing the tunnel - so off she trotted as a LARGE rottweiler was entering the tunnel from the other end. Hmm ... but then again I really don't think the dog was entirely to blame - the owner was a couple of cans short of a six pack.

And what's so great about Border collies? Agility is absolutely lousy with them.:D O yeah they want to work and they're obedient, but I'm sorry how does that qualify you as smart? If you throw a ball into the sea a collie goes in to retrieve it - a yorkie sits there looks at you and thinks "that was silly, You're going to get cold and wet going to get that." Who's the smarter dog - I mean really?

(I guess I just love the independent spirit of the yorkie.)

PS AlaskaYorkie - "Yorkie's" - you know better than that where your apostrophe should go. Sorry the grammar witch within couldn't forbear. :D :p You're usually a stickler for grammar!

I'm with you there... I have a cocker and she (Daisy) is just about as ditzy as can be!! yes, she is a very good dog...sweet, VERY well trained and super well behaved...but just as you say "clueless". that totally describes her :) we always say she has this "huh??" look about her. LOL. I will admit, she was very easy to train, but she was still not as smart at 16 weeks as Maggie is. weird...

If Maddie is suposes to be that smart....why lately is she having trouble realizing that the rug in the kitchen is not grass.....lol lol Must be the rubber backing to it or something that attracks her?????

Other than that.... she catches on to thing pretty easy.... well I take that back.... She's been a Yuppy Yorkie lately too.... Hummmmmmmmm do you see a pattern here. I think she is becoming a brat!!! lol

Besides a Yorkie I've always wanted a Golden Retriever... but they shead too much and would kill my asthma and allergies. They are just beautiful!!!! I want one that goes outside and waits in the drive way for me to come home from work. lol lol :p :p :p :p

do you know anybody that's going to have yorkie terrier puppies in june cause someone close to me wants one really bad I will pay 1,000 for one female that's not fixed or anything thanks

OMG daisy does the high five too. I love it. she will sit, high five, lay down, "go get it" and "drop it" and speak on command. does your cocker actually have a bark or is it more of a "roooooo" type of howling noise? cuz daisy's is a roo. LOL. she has only actually let out a real bark like 3 times in her life and it was when she was totally caught off guard and startled...and it scared the daylights out of me...once i was napping on the couch and she was startled by the yard guys outside the window. she let out this horribly loud high pitched BARK and I came completely out of my skin!!! I think it scared the stuff out of her too, she is not used to having that kind of noise come out of her LOL.

Teddy's the smartest dog I've had. He knows how to open doors, he pushes and pushes and scratches on them until they open. I can't even use the bathroom in peace lol

Hmmmmm..... Jack Russell terriers are not on that list - makes me go hmmmmmmmm..... I had a JRT who was as smart as a whip - I taught him to sit, down, up, come, etc. all in about 30 mins. I've always heard that JRTs are super smart..........

Schnauzers are #12???? I don't believe it. My schnauzer was as dumb as a rock. I worked and worked with him and the only thing he ever learned to do was shake hands. He was so cute and sweet tho. He gave you the big puppy dog eyes when he gave you his paw. He was so proud of himself for learning to shake hands.

I didn't see Lhasa's on the list. Maybe I missed it. My Lhasa was so smart she would know a trick after I showed her ONCE. I never saw a dog so smart and willing to cooperate (for a treat that is). With her it was "no treat, no trick". Now THAT'S SMART!

I am wondering how one might determine how smart a breed is? and who would rank higher than who?
I really believe that all dogs......are smarter than humans. think about it..
we have to work a week to get money for food , then have to shop for it, then have to prepare it.... all they have to do is sit up pretty!

Well I guess theyre all smart about certain things cuz London will look at me like I'm crazy when I call her or tell her sit but Teddy learned tricks in only 1/2 when he was about 3 months old, so he's really smart to me. And that opening doors, no other dog of mine has ever done that. He can also almost say 'I love mama', he is still learning but I thought him to whine on command and slowly I kept repeating I love mama and he sounds like he's close to saying it. He amazes me.

WOW, that is so cool. I saw a dog on tv that said "I love you". I tried and tried to teach mine to talk so we could go on Leno and Letterman. LOL Let us know when he makes it. We will look for you on Leno and Letterman. LOL

It's because its sooooooo cold outside!! She is smart - she knows that!!

And as far as Yorkies who don't do tricks - it's because they look at you like, "yeah, right - I don't think so" - not cause they can't learn it!!

I was very surprised also that they was not on the list...I believe they are the smartest dogs in the world-not to offend any yorkies-but I have had jack russels in the past and they were housebroken in 2 days and would mind any thing I said. Jack Russels never get the recognition they deserve :rolleyes:

My son and I were just talking about this. My lil' Sebastian is SO SMART!! I have had many dogs in my day but this lil' guys brain is to big for his lil' sweet head.

He talks, he listens, he disciplines Sweet Pea, keeps her in check, tells you what he wants when he wants. He seems to understand what you are say..I mean if I didn't know better he is human. Now my lil' Sweet Pea..well lets just say she is Sebastian arm candy ? But I love her just the same :D
