Do your babies go down the stairs?? I'm trying different places to keep Peeka Boo when i'm going to be away(School is re-starting on Wed.). He FREAKED when he was alone in my bedroom, bathroom and in the kitchen. OMG he scared me in the kitchen this morning. I left him with all his toys food and the radio on and he could care less. He jumped up on the baby gate and it FELL ON HIM! He took off and ran up a whole flight of stairs. I put him out in the hallway with our bedroom doors closed and he's been totally SILENT. I cant believe it, I havent heard a peep for a whole hour. The problem is, there are stairs out there. He wont go down them right now no matter what, but is there an age where they get bold enough to try? He's a week or so shy of 4mo. |
Allie is 13 weeks and she goes up and down the stairs. She is a no holding back kinda gal  |
Ahhhhhhhhhh poor baby must have been so scared from the gate. Buddy does not even touch the stairs when he runs down. It's amazing how he takes two at a time with me at the other end of the leash:eek: I just can get him to WALK down them. However, he's not a little one. Carol & Buddy |

Pippa goes up and down the stairs but i carry her up and down as much as i can as she has fallen before and it frightens me everytime she goes up or down |
I think it not only an age thing; it's a size thing as well. They definitely have an easier time going up then coming down. We have many steps around the house, and the only ones he is allowed access is a set of 4 steps. Even though he uses them quite often he still has tumbles, but because they are not high there is no real danger. There is no way he's ready for our outdoor steps; one wrong move and he would wind up on the cement. Just because they are not afraid to try something, it doesn't mean they are ready to do it. Joey's still less than 4 pounds, but each ounce he's gained has made a difference in his step climbing ability. |
Mine are 2 huge flights of 8-10 stairs. He doesnt have the nerve to try yet. He did slide down once(backwards on his stomach) looking up at us like "what?" but I think his foot slipped. |
wow... My boys have been up & down pretty much any & all stairs since they were like 12 weeks old! The only stairs that my little one does not go up is hardwood stairs! He slips and then gets scared!:p My 8lb boy tackles and defeats any set of stairs! haha :D |
Brandi shocked the daylights out of me........at 8 weeks and 1 lb 9 oz.........I caught her pulling herself up the stairs (they're carpeted) I couldn't believe I saw what I saw so I brought her downstairs and up she went again.....the stairs were way taller than her........but she did it.....she didn't start running down herself until about 5 or 6 months old.......now she's an old pro......she likes to lay at the landing and I throw her ball to her.......and then she pushes it down the steps and I catch it and throw it back up |
My 10 year old pom and Cali don't do stairs except the one stair in to my ranch house. They have never seen flights of stairs so they never learned |
My male yorkie Sami 18mos weights about 4pounds can't go up or down the stairs, he can't jump up or down from the bed. But thats okay I love to carry him.. Now my female Lilly who is 7mos old and 3pounds can do everything.. Nancy mom of Sami and Lilly |
Our babies will be 12 weeks old tomorrow and they have been climbing up and down the stairs for a couple of weeks now. It did take Kiko about a week longer than Saly and Reese, but he got the hang of it pretty quickly! We put a stepping stool at the end of our loveseat which is at the end of our bed and they climb that so that they can sleep with Sabastian! |
I think I ended up teaching Gracie to do the stairs so that she would not fall down them. It took her all of two days to get the hang of it. I believe that was at around 3 months or so. |
Mastering the stairs... Jackson was about 5 months old before he would attempt any stairs. Even then, he'd only go up the stairs. I had to actually train him to come down the stairs. He was about 6 months old before he'd go in that direction. I started by putting him one or two steps from the bottom and encouraging him to come down to me. Once he did that, I increased it by a step or two. Once he mastered about 4 steps, he was willing to try the whole staircase. He still goes slowly...he is small enough that I think if he tried to go quickly, he'd topple head over heels. But at least now he's not afraid of the stairs. |
Hi, both my girls have issues with stairs :( Trixie will go up but she won't come back down. She's 1 yr. 4 mths and weighs about 5 lbs. Pia will turn 2 in April but is very small. (just 2 lbs) she won't even attempt our steps. No going up and no way would she go down. When I bought Pia puppy steps for the couch and our bed she looked at me like I was nuts. She eventually went up but it took months for her to wanna go down them. She's definately frightened of heights. Trixie I'm just confused by because she'd jump off anything so why the steps are an issue is beyond me  Good Luck to you :) |
My little Evie is almost 7mo old and 3lbs. She will run up the stairs (17 of them) like she would on the ground. It is hilarious. If she ever stops you have to pick her up b/c she cannot make it up the rest. She WILL NOT come down them. I am actually afraid for her to even try. I have stood at the bottom and she just looks at me and runs in circles for me to come and pick her up. I am not sure if she will ever be able to come down them. Courtney |
Love the name lol.. Well my Peeka(lol) he was going up and down the stairs since about 9 weeks with no probs he is now 9 months and does it with ease. Our new baby Daisy is 12 weeks and she can mad dash up them but if she is higher than the 3rd stair she won't come down them. They are determined though and eventually will go down it only took Peeka 2 days to master them |
Not one of mine (6) will either go up or down stairs...:D..I do use a gate, however our Gwen can leap that in seconds, but stairs no way....All mine are over the age of 1 1/2.. |
If you can get a bigger or more confident dog to show them how to go down the stairs, it helps. Eddie hated them for a long, long time, but a friend's Irish Setter showed him how to do it. |
Jeter is 1 1/2 years old and 9 pounds and cries like a baby at the top of the stairs. He can go up, but forget about down. I have to carry him down. |
Sadie is 3 yrs old....she can go up and down stairs like a streak of light...I took the carpeting off, (it was ugly) so they are just wood now...she is a little more careful going up and down now...she has fallen down them a couple of times...scared the SH** out of me...Lillie is 7 months old...she has never even attempted them...that's ok with me...she isn't as big as Sadie and she has shorter legs...I don't mind carrying her though. |
Brandi is up and down like a pro......of course I only have 6 steps.......but it's a good thing because her pee pee pad is upstairs......and her food is downstairs........but she loves running up and down.......it makes me a little nervous though.... |
Thanks everybody, Peeka Boo is so weird, he'll jump off my almost 2ft high bed but he hates going down from small heights. I think ill put a gate 2-3 stairs down just in case he falls or something. I'll pray that he never goes under the rail. |
Sissy began going up and down the stairs at 14 week of age (and just over 2 lbs). But a couple weeks after that, she took a mean tumble down the stairs and has never gone down since. Thats been well over a year now and she still won't go down stairs. I think because of her tiny size, she has almost a slinky effect and she topples very easily when the typical stair is almost as tall as she is!! She has no problem flying off the couch or chair and she will jump off our bed (which is really high) when she is excited. |
Kodak goes up and down stairs with carpet on them only. If there's no carpet, he's not budging. Maybe it's to slippery. |
All my babies go up and down stairs fine, that is all except Scampers. Scampers can go up stairs fine, he zooms right up them. But going down is another story. He is terrified of going down them, he absolutely won't do it. I got tired of him running up the stairs and then whining and barking because he couldn't go down them. So I put a gate up in front of the stairs so he won't be able to go up them and get stuck. I have been working with him on going down stairs since he was 12 weeks old, I did alot of training but it didn't do any good. He is now a year old now and still won't go down the stairs. The most I have ever gotten him to go down stairs was the last 3 steps on the bottom, other than that you can forget it. Don't know what his problem is with going down stairs but he won't do it. So now anytime I go down stairs I have to carry him. 4 months is young, it took a little bit longer with some of my other dogs so you still have plenty of time to work on it. |
