New Puppy? Vet check???
 

Ok..got a question....when taking your new puppy for his first check up......what tests, questions do you ask the Vet? I know the obvious questions.....but, do you test for anything else???? Is there a blood panel that should look for what???

The full blood panel and the Bile Acid test - wait a few days - week until the pup is use to your surroundings and eating good. Plus everything they normally do - eyes, heart, fecal, etc....Then x-ray for joints - petella checked - unless he/she is really good at feeling the joint movements.

Wow! I didn't know you get x-rays, and bile acid test right away. When I took Piper in to get neutered they ran blood work then. Her enzymes were up, so they scheduled me for an Bile acid test then. They did run a full blood panel, along with eyes heart ect. Make sure they check the stool you bring in that day for giardia & cocidea. She tested positive for both.

Do you get the Bile Acid test on all puppies even if their enzymes look good and they appear healthy? I did not get X-rays either but the vet did go over all of their joints thoroughly by feel. Hope he is good.

I have one more question while I am picking your brain.... do you have a list of all the tests they should have before considering breeding? I have been trying to find something online but get vague entries like: test for STDs and genetic disease. I am just collecting info, far from ready to pursue. TIA!

Can't help you with the tests needed prior to breeding, but if possible, take a fresh stool sample with you to the vet. Then they won't have to fetch a sample by putting a swab up the posterior. Enough scary things happen at the vet's without that!

Yes, all my pups are given full blood panel and Bile Acid (best time is at 9 - 12 weeks old), so I can tell prospective buyers or new owners they had this done and I give them a copy of the results. This way you know up front how it checks out. I also do this on my breeding dogs, to check and make sure they are not carries. Just because they are healthy when older does not mean they can't be carriers and pass it on to pups. I would just rather be safe than sorry. These tests are not guarnatee - full proof, but it is the only thing we have now that is not too invasive. For breeding also get burcellosis and I think there is one more STD to check. I just tell me vet to do it all! He knows me and knows how thorough I like to be. Yes, it cost more - but I trust my vet and he will not preform unneeded tests on my dogs. He does not like to do more than what is necessary for the dogs sake. He is very compasionate and does want to put them more than needed.

Your vet will check ears on a new pup too as well as the teeth too. Yorkies usually retain their baby canines and may need them removed at around 6 months. This is a great time if you want an x-ray to check petellas and get a reading (score).

It's the breeders responsibility to have the bile acid test done before selling the puppy. Take a stool sample in, and a urine sample if possible. You may have to walk behind the puppy with a big spoon and a small container and wait till it squats. :) Make sure you have a small container to put it in. You can also pick up containers from the vet. (free) to put these samples in before your appointment. I'm sure the Vet. will let you know if he suspects a problem anywhere.

Doing my interviewing of Vets.....

Vet said, that Bile Acid was a two hour test? One was fasting and one was post pradial, which means after meals... Also, a full blood panel. Does that sound right?
