Tolerance for cold Hi, it's been unusually colder here in Southern California (members from xtreme cold states pls don't hate me for saying this) and I'm wondering what I can do to keep my 6 months old yorkie comfortable during the day when the heater is off. She puts up a fight with me when I try to put on her collar/ harness so I'm sure she won't be happy if I try to put clothes on her. I put a blanket on her bed but I don't think she snuggles under it. Any suggestions? Oh she seems to be sleeping a lot more lately, I wonder if it's due to the weather as well. Thanks. |
cold If they are cold, I find they will make a bed under the blankets of their bedding..if they sleep on top uncovered, then they must be fine...never seen one lay there and freeze itself when blankets were in the bedding. |
If you have like a down afghan or comforter, I would just curl the edges around in a circle in her bed and she'll probably love it. Our puppy love, love, loves our feather comforter. She sleeps with us and just curls up in it like she's in seventh heaven. Half the time at night when our house temp goes down (we live in a cool climate) she doesn't even go under it. She just lays on top. Our puppy doesn't mind wearing a sweater altho she wrestles with us when we put it on. I think she just thinks she can put it on herself, because she gets all excited when we get it out to put on her. Of course, it does also mean that we're going outside when we get it out, so that may be the reason she gets excited, I don't know for sure. Also, we got our kitty an electrically warmed heating pad made for cats to lay on. They sell it at Petsmart and Petco if you have any of those big chain stores in your area. It keeps the mat at a nice even temp for the kitty. |
If she's in a crate you can cover the crate with a towel. Make sure the opening isn't covered, that way they can cool off in the front or find a warm spot in the back. |
I think it may be what they are used to and their size. Our vet said that as long as it's not -5 outside then we dont' need a sweater on Punkin. I do find she gets chilly on the colder days and lately she has been getting under the covers at night. |
does she appear cold?? shivering?? i find sometimes i worry about layla being cold and she is just fine... i suggest leaving a big blanket out for her to curl up on if she gets cold. |
Adie doesn't mind a sweater either and she hates dressing up. She'll put up a fight and get out of anything else I try. |
Mine put up a fight when I first started putting clothes on them but the got used to it and now Chaschi will ask for his coat on. Example. this morning I took off his coat to brush him and did not put it back on afterwards. then I brushed Ollie and meanwhile he went and laid in front of the register. When he saw me putting Ollie's coat on her he came running over, as soon as I picked up his coat he sat right down waiting for me to put it back on him. |

I found Max sleeping on the radiator cover (it's like a piece of furniture)so I moved the drapes and put a big cozy towel there. He slept there last night. Itn was so cute. We live in NY so we get heat. When I put him in his crate when I go outside, I put one of my pajama tops in it so that he can cuddle up with it. He also won't stay under covers. I feel for you guys on the West Coast - you must be freezing! I heard a report on the news yesterday that small dogs should not be taken on on walks in this cold - just take them out to go and bring them right back into the warmth. Judy |
I've never seen so many days of frost as I've seen here. They are now saying we could get......shall I say the nasty four letter word........SNOW!!!:eek: Zada and Azrael wear their sweat shirts during the day and their big blankets are by all three sliders so they can enjoy the sun regardless of what time it is and they relish every warm ray of it.:D I would suggest you put little sweaters on her that she can't get off. Keep them on her day and night for a couple of weeks or more (taking them off only to bathe or brush) and she will be used to having them on and will be more comfortable. |
I agree with YorkieRose ... they won't freeze, they find a way to be warm as long as there is a soft blanket, etc. available to them. Toto gets unusually cold [shivering] so she wears at least a little T-Shirt all the time. Usually little jammies at night and a little jogger or fleece jogger when we take her outside .... lately that's been rare! :p Toto will scratch & burrow in her blankets until she is just right and gives a great big "sigh" ... then I'm certain she is warm. |
I use the rule, if I am cold, they are. I sleep with a down comforter, they love and sometimes I wake up and they are both as close to me as they can get, nothing like body warmth, huh. |
I'm in So Cal, too. And I know what you're saying about the cold. No one really believes us, but we're not used to it. I guess we're usually spoiled. Riley used to not like it when I'd put clothes on him. But now, when I take out one of his sweaters he runs to me and wants to put it on. He knows it'll keep him warm. I also read in a forum that they like when you give them a towel or blanket just out of the dryer. I'll have to that. |
Cold winters in South Africa I live in South Africa and where I live our winters are quite cold and very, very wet. It is only autumn and when I washed Cash the other day, he shivered and actually got quite comfortable with the blow-drier:D For this reason I want to get him a sweater for winter, but SA doesn't really have an abundance supply!! Does anyone have a nice pattern for a warm sweater? |
