Docking tail? Has anyone docked your yorkie's tail after a few month- a year instead of docking them as they were born? |
I've read on here that it becomes risky at that late stage:( It may not heal properly for some reason, but that's the extent of my memory on that subject:laugh: Sorry, I'm not much help:o |

I hope she meant a vet was going to do it. It's major surgery if not done in a few days, and I'm not sure a vet would even consider it. Nancy |

:D Kodaks tail is not cut and he was 3mos old when I got him, the vet would've done it then but not afterwards. Some vets feel there is to much cartalege (if I spelled that right) inside the tail that it's to risky and may not heal properly. By Kodak being tiny his vet didn't think he was going to make it. I told them don't touch the tail or anything till we were sure he was going to be healthy. Even at 3mos when my vet did the 2nd health check, he said he would dock it but I opted not to. I love his tail! |

tail docking I have often thought Shylah's tail was docked to long and thought about getting it docked shorter. I used to have a Cocker Spaniel and his tail was docked to long. It looked very odd and I got a lot of bad comments on what it did look like (being the tan color of the dog) and they weren't good. So I did get his tail re-docked and he did fine. Just had a gauze bandaid on the back end for a few weeks. I think I got him neutered at the same time. But I love Shylah's tail because it is like a propeller when she is happy and excited to see us. I would hate to loose that!! And I have seen all kinds of yorkies with short, medium and long tails. WHO CARES! |

I heard if you dont do it a few days after they are born it is like an amputation |
That is really awful then!! :( It doesn\'t sound like its worth. |
I think we will be seeing more undocked tails since many states are requiring vets to do the initial docking and some breeders won\'t pay for it. Nancy |
Reece has a long tail and I love his little wagger hehe.. Dawn |
Jazz\'s tail has a little area at the tip that isn\'t straight- it points down at an angle from the rest of his little tail. It doesn\'t seem to bother him, and he wags it up a storm. |
tail docking my friend is a vettech, and she said it is considered surgery after the pup is over 5 days old. i get my pups docked and dewclawed when they are 3 days old. my last litter cost $88 to get 5 pups done, and i was given a 10 pound bag of puppy food for coming in! for docking the tail later, depending on age and weight of the dog, a blood workup might have to be done for anethesia purposes. i have been asking around about getting tail and claws done and it averages about $150 here in federal way. |
