HELP, Nemo can't sleep with cone. Hello everyone Well finally went ahead with the neutering today and everything went well. We brought him to the vet at 9 a.m. and picked him up at 6 p.m. He actually looked pissed at us and was overall pretty hyper. Well it's 10:28 p.m. here in NY and my dog is dead tired- I can see it in his eyes-, but he cannot seem to get comfortable with the cone on. He just sits and lay's his head and nods off for a few minutes and then moves again. In effects his been restless for the last three hours. What can I do. I don't know if Nemo can last for ten days with the collar. Should I take the collar off so he can sleep? Poor dog seems a little restless with it on and why do some vets put the collar on after neutering and some don't? Thanks John |
YOu can take off the cone while he sleeps. When Zoe got neutered, I didn't give him the cone. The OCCASIONAL lick is ok but if he is not excessively licking the stitches, he does not really need it. YOu can def take it off at night for him to sleep better. |
I've heard other YT members have bought a baby (skin baby) onesie and put it on their pup so they don't have to wear the cone at all. that would be good for night time! |
I just realized I didn't answer your question. The reason vets give them cones is so that they can't lick the stitches. Licking it can cause infection and some dogs go so far and biting off the stitches so if he is not constantly licking the area, you should be fine. As I said, I didn't give Zoe the cone after his neuter or his LP surgery. |
PS, welcome to YT!!! :) |
I used a baby onsie on Cali and it worked well. Poor baby I couldn't sleep like that either!! |
Thanks! Thanks for the responses. He wouldn't stop licking at first so I had to put the cone back on since I kept nodding off (we hadn't slept well the night before). I tried taking it off again at 6 and I guess he was so tired he just cuddled up next to me and nodded off for a couple of hours. I've caught him licking a couple of times but he stops when I tell him to. Luckily I took a couple of days off next week so I'll be here to watch over him. I'm going to try the onesie, I'm afraid the one my neighbor had was too small for him so I'll need to go out for that. Thanks again for your quick responses... I'll probably be posting again soon. Now I'm off to try to give him his medicine. |
Bought the onsies for LillyBelle when she was spayed to keep her from licking her stitches...PERFECT...and looked like a tiny little pink baby doll. Just unsnap and roll up to take out to potty. |
Izzy's wearing her onesie right now:) The one I put on her last night, somehow she wiggled out of it in the middle of the night:eek: I checked on her several times, and sure enough around 3 am I saw she was nakey again:p I'm glad your little dude is doing okay, it's always scary when they have surgery! |
I took the cone off as soon as I got home with Max. I bought the onesies, but never needed them because he stopped licking when I told him to and he wasn't a problem with it. Someone had posted that putting the snaps on the onesie on their backs (put the onesie on backwards) would prevent irritation. I also found something made of very soft cotton that you put on newborn babies before their umbilical cord falls off. It cost 99 cents and tied in the back. I never needed it, but I think it would have been perfect. Good luck with your little boy. Max is fine after just 3 weeks. He's a little tired, but I've been lazy so it may have nothing to do with the neutering and more to do with a lack of exercise. Judy Judy |
Nemo Update Hey everyone! My little bugger is doing just dandy. He was pretty good about not licking once I told him to stop a couple of times so it didn't turn out to be much of a problem taking off the cone. The sutures come off on Monday and it looks like it all healed nicely. However, now I have a whole new problem. Ever since the surgery he's been acting up. He learned how to potty pretty quickly but for the last couple of days he's peeing outside the wee-wee pad constantly. He's also been humping more in the last couple of days than he used to before the surgery... what's up with that??? |
Tell me about it! Max went on the pad when he came home, but then he stopped. Now he goes on the pad for a few days if I use Odormate on the floors. I got rid of my kitchen area rug this morning and blocked off all of the spots I know he has marked. He's now wearing a homemade belly band, which I'm taking off every few hours and bringing him to his paper. Of course, he won't go on the paper. He can hold it for hours, so the belly band is dry so far. Some dogs don't like to be wet and they stop marking because of the belly band. He also is wearing a leash in the house because I need to be able to get him to listen better. My vet tells me to be patient because it takes 3 months for the testosterone to leave their systems. ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????? heeeeeeellllllllpppppppp! My sympathies to you.
