Question from a new potential yorkie owner Hi everyone. I wanted to get your opinions. I have a friend who is considering buying a yorkie. The one she is looking at will be around 7 lbs fully grown. We live in WA state. Right now we are in a cold snap, but normally, I would say our winter temp is around 40 degrees. One of her hesitations is that she is not a "dress up her dog" kind of person. She's wondering if you HAVE to put sweaters and such on them in the winter? She plans on keeping the dog indoors, etc. My opinion is that it's not REQUIRED to put them in clothes. Most of us just like to. I could see if you were going to go on an hour long hike, or you lived in Alaska or something. But I want to make sure I'm giving accurate info. Phoebe has done just fine going out potty without her sweater this winter and she's 4.4 lbs. What do you think? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! deb |
I dont' over dress my dogs (lex uses a harness vest if I am dressing him up). Lex is 9 1/2 lbs and he does get cold at times if the weather is very nippy. If it's really cold outside I do put on a coat on him because he gets cold...remember now matter how big they will get they are only single coat dogs. They dont' have the two layers of hair like a lot of breeds so they do get cold. So far NY has been good for the winter. Only two or so days I have had to put on his coat for him to go outside. |
I live in Wa state too, right up here in Snohomish. Cooper hates clothes and all that I make him wear is his harness vests if I need to keep him leashed (ok, I occasionally will put a t-shirt on him until the pouting gets to me :D ) Carley I dress quite a bit. I don't think they have to wear clothes, but when we do get the colds snaps, I'm just more careful that Cooper doesn't stay out too long. He was out this morning in the snow, he is loving this snow, and I just watch him and don't let him get too cold and then bring him in and blow dry all the snow burrs off of him. He is dozing in his bed in front of the fireplace now. |
My first Yorkie loved his jumpers and coats and wouldn't venture out into the cold without something to keep him warm...my new Yorkie dosen't like or seem to need any jumpers or coats and goes out into the cold weather without a flinch..he seems alot tougher then my first Yorkie...suppose each dog will differ in their likes and dislikes:) |
I rarely dress mine. I think he looks so cute but he's not thrilled. He does just fine in cold weather. He loves to be outside no matter what it's like. I'm the one that's picky. |

Hey Delaina... you got a ton of snow, then, didn't you? We were hearing about blizzard like conditions up north, and we only got a trace of snow last night! Maybe we'll meet up someday! deb |
I think dressing them up or not is for the owner to decide. I sure there are plenty of people who dont. I like to but that is me. |
Hey Deb, Well, we got a bit, not as much as that last snow though...I'd say we got about 6 -8 inches. We do live up higher here, around 500 feet up, so sometimes we get way more than even down in Everrett. I personally am tired of the snow already this winter...I think that 2 feet we had earlier did me in!! Cooper is loving it though!! Yep, we definitely need to meet up sometime! |

yep, I'm done with winter, and it only started , what, the 20th of Dec? I'm looking forward to spring! Phoebe likes the snow too. But we don't let her out in it much. Maybe this spring or summer we will meet up. do you work ? got skin kids? More dogs? I only have one yorkie right now, but I'm vying for another. Hubby says I gotta wait a bit. We are going to Disneyworld in Feb, so that's a nice chunk of money. I wouldn't want to leave a tiny baby anyway. Phoebe has a great place to stay while we're gone.. another yorkie owner. deb |
If your friend plans to keep the furbaby indoors, there is NO need to dress her up. My babies are naked when inside the house, and because we do have 4 seasons, I chose to potty train them both inside and out. But should she chose to take them outdoors when they go potty, depending on how cold it is, it sure is handy to have something over them. |
oops, double post |

I don't think you have to dress them up if you don't want to. Although, I will admit that I wasn't too keen on people putting clothes on their dog when I first bought Maizee, but after learning about her hair condition and finding out that she HAS to wear clothes if she is in the sun or extreme cold, it actually is really fun. It may grow on your friend :) Maizee goes outside right now without sweaters on and its about 30 degrees here. I don't keep her out very long since she has no hair to protect herself, but she's fine with it either way, sweater or no sweater. |
Yorkies are different than other dogs because they have no undercoat, thus no shedding. This undercoat works great in keeping other dogs warm. We live in AZ, but the mornings can be in the 50's and Joey starts shaking when I take him out with no covering. Even a little t-shirt helps him tremendously. He wasn't thrilled at first, but it wasn't long before he didn't mind it a bit. My breeder told me "if you need a sweater, he needs a sweater." I realize some humans can run naked in the snow, but most of us would be uncomfortable. Nancy |
