Getting Two Babies at Once Hi Everybody! I'm a newbie who is going to look at some brand new 4 week old babies on Friday. There are 2 males and 1 female. I sort of had my heart set on a girl, but just incase she is spoken for I'll have to go with the 2 boys, or 1 of each. Ok is having a boy and a girl at the same time a good idea because of their sex (plan to have them neutered and spayed at the appropriate time) not to mention the potty training. I had a male for over 12 years, but my beloved Pepper in now at Rainbow Bridge and my heart aches for him every single day since its been only 6 weeks since he passed on. Am I crazy for wanting two puppies at the same time. I need advice about the mixing the sexes and what I should expect if I do and with the potty training. |
I have two, a boy and a girl they are about 7 months apart in age and are wonderful together. I've got them seperated right now because Zsa Zsa is in heat and they miss each other. Good luck with your babies, I think two is wonderful. |
First I wanted to say I'm sorry for your lose and also wanted to Welcome you to YT. I got my boy first and then 1 month later got my girl. It was much easier because once I got my girl Timmy pretty much potty trained her. She was trained to go on pads in a matter of 2 weeks and has been accident free since. If you really want to get 2 I say go for it. My babies are so attached to eachother. If one happens to step outside with my kids the other will run around the house and cry the entire time until the one comes back in and they start kissing eachother:) Yes it was a little harder than having one but I wouldn't have had it any other way. We got our 2 six months apart. I wish I would have gotten 2 at the same time. They do get along great. We have 2 girls. Thinking of getting a boy next. The 2 girls are stuck to me like glue, so daddy kind of feels left out at times. Maybe a little boy would stick to him. |
2 is definetely the way to go!! I have 2 males almost a year old and they play together so well. They do fight over the same toy or treat sometimes but I think they even enjoy that. If I leave one with daddy in bed or in a different room, the other one is just lost and will just lay around and pout. Two are so much fun. I don't think the sex matters so much as long as they are neutered or spayed. Also if they are littermates they should always be close. |
I think it is a great idea. There were only 2 in Daisy's litter and I would have taken the little boy too if he had been available. I got a little male when she was 6 months old and they are great playmates. Welcome to YT! |
Two at one time is a great idea. They will play so cute together and be such good buddies. As long as you plan to have them spay/neutered there won't be any problems with them being opposite sex. My two are 7 weeks apart in age, and they are so much fun to watch. I would not know what to do with just one. |
Two is a great idea:) They are such social little dogs and I think it's nice for them to have a constant companion:thumbup: |
I have a male and a female they are 1 month apart in age and I got them 1 month apart from each other. So it was like having two from the same litter. They are best buddies and would be lost withut the other one. I got them spayed and neutered at the same time so they would have the same down time. I would have two puppies again at the same time it was fun |
Archie and Willie are from the same litter and we still think that was the best decision we could have made. We didn't plan to get two but could not choose between them so took them both. Despite what I've read about that not being the best way to go about it, we have not had any real problems. They are every bit as bonded with their people as they are with each other. Potty training was not any more difficult, but other training is going a little slower. Archie has been a bit quicker to learn basic commands while Willie needs a bit more time. Archie gets a bit impatient sometimes --- like he is saying "Look, I'm down already. Give me another treat". Any small issues are more than made up for by the fun of watching them play together. |
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. You've made me feel better about getting two at the same time from the same litter. Since my last was a sweet boy, I thought a girl I could spoil as well would be fun. Since there is only one girl and 2 boys I have to make a decision what combination too choose, but I suppose that will become clearer when I see their cute little faces and how they respond to me and if they are still not spoken for yet. I was not able to see them until Friday, so hopefully they all will still be available. I am happy to know potty training is not going to be too difficult with two at once, but you've got me thinking about spacing them a little so the other can help train the newbie..the downside being they won't be from the same litter. |
Here's something to think about. My first one (Daisy) took a lot longer to potty train than the second (Teddy). Teddy was practically potty trained when we brought him home at 8 wks. Daisy took about a year to potty train. I was afraid that she would cause him to start pottying in the house and this did happen occasionally. Another thought. Maybe you could get a second one from the same parents, but a later litter. |
I don't know about what is better getting 2 of one sex of one of each sex, but I got my 2 boys at the same time. They are littermates, brothers! They are best friends and I would feel horrible if they ever had to live without the other one. I feel better leaving them home alone while Im at work because they have each other. Im sooo glad I got 2 of them. Financial wise be prepared!! I am from the Boston area... when I take my boys to the vet for their vaccinations Im looking at a bill of $350+! Grooming both of them every 2 - 3 months is about $100 and their heartworm & frontline is $100 every 3 months. Not to mention, food, toys, leashes, harnesses (they eat theirs if I leave it out for a minute, Ive replaced them 3x at least). Clean up of 2 unhousebroken pups is a pain! Also, paying attention to both of them is a bit difficult bc they both want 100% of my attention and they get jealous of the other one! If you can handle the extra work and the extra money of a 2nd one, then I highly recommend getting 2 at the same time! There is nothing like when they are both curled up on my lap at the end of the day sleeping! |
I have two 5 month olds from the same litter. A boy and a girl. So far the only downside is that the boy is bonded more with the other dogs then with us. I am separating them a little more and taking him on special trips with me. Good luck with your decision. They are so much fun! |
Thanks guys you all have given me things to think about and I appreciate your candor. If anyone else wants to share their experiences with getting two puppies at the same be they the same sex or not please chime in I love the input. |
