Help I Need To Be Sure We are leaving in a couple of weeks to go to Florida a 2 day trip for us. Poor Sassy still get's car sick sometimes in the car so i called the vet and asked her what i should do and she told me to give her 1/4 tablet of Dramamine. Sassy weighs 3 lbs 5 oz. what do you all think. I don't want to hurt her so i need to be sure that this is ok. |
I had the same concern when I was bringing Tetley home (a 6 hour drive) and the breeder suggested I buy baby Gravol (liquid) and give him 1/2 a cc before leaving. The pharmacist can give you a liquid syringe (without the needle) if you ask for it. He's only 2.5 lbs so the dosage should be appropriate. I bought it but didn't end up giving it to him because he didn't seem nauseated, and was fine all the way home. |
I certainly understand the concern for giving such a small pup medication for car sickness but, if you wait until he becomes sick and then give it to him it won't work...I know this from experience! Going on fishing trips and taking the dramamine on the boat DOES NOT work! It needs to be taken BEFORE you feel sick. |
Please go to your vet and see what they say. We tried children's Benadryl with Jo and it worked for a while but it was hard to give to him. I asked the vet and he gave us Meclizine...I give it to each of them in a small bite of soft food about a half hour before we go anywhere and it works perfectly. We were given 25 mg. tablets and we give each of them 1/4th of a tablet...that will last about 6 hours and maybe a little longer. The vet cut each tablet to the right size so we are sure they're getting the right dosage. This works better than anything else we've tried and poor Jo gets sick just looking at the car! Good luck! |

the vet told me to give her a 1/4 tablet of dramamine once a day does that sound right |
the baby I sold went by car to Virginia. She had gotten sick on me in the car before so I called my vet. he also recommended 1/4 of a Draminine tablet but ONLY if she needed it. She didn't. |
I have heard of this method as well for a foster pup we had that got car sick. and he was a bit larger than a yorkie so it was a disaster when we would take him anywhere :) we gave it to him and he was fine on it. he got a little groggy but that's about it. never had any effects other than that and he is completely fine and healthy. My vet also said benedryl but I felt that was a little more iffy. good luck!!!! |
Hi, I work for a vet and he also prescribes the dramamine for car sickness. It does make them really groggy tho. Another alternative is to give a 1/4 of a ginger cookie (ginger settles the tummy) and you can give it when needed as it works on the upset stomach, you can give it more frequently too. Hope your trip goes well. |
