Need suggestions I got my new baby yesterday. She is 7 months old, and we decided to name her Candi. But, she arrived to me very thin, dirty and not socialized. Not exactly what I was expecting. I asked all the questions several times. She has the sweetest face and she wants to be loved but she is scared. You have to approach her slowly. What I need help with is her coat, it is very thin and stringy. And how do I get her to trust me? I would appreciate any help thanks! :) |

It is so sad that she came that way. The pictures you showed us before...she looked clean and happy. I don't think it will take much time for her to feel loved, secure and comfy in your home. I don't know much about how to improve the coat, but I'm sure others will. Maybe her adult coat will come in thicker? That is unbelievable that anyone would ship a pup that hasn't had a bath and looking spiffy. I can imagine how surprised you were at that, but just give her lots of love, food and kisses and she'll be trusting and loving you in no time! Maddie sends kisses to Candi and Mia!!! Congrats on your new baby!!! |
Thank you Connie! I do give her lots of kisses. I try to hold her a lot. But I also have try not to make Mia to jealous. :animal36 |
does she run and hide from you or doesnt come when you call her ? an easy way to have her become accustom to you and your movements is use a harness and tie the lead to your belt hoop, let her follow you around ....when your sitting too keep her tied she will lay down next to you... it will take time for her to trust you, the more praise and patience the better...Ive found bathing and grooming a bonding time too if done very gently and with tons of praise. good luck with her and congrats |
I guess you can get/give her a puppy cut.... maybe the new hair will be thicker. Hopefully after some time she will come out of her shell... some pups do stay "nervous" even after time..... All the best to you and your new yorkie. :) |
No she doesn't run and hide. She doesn't come when you call her. And sometimes when you go to pet her she cowards down like she is afraid we are going to hit her. :( |
I don't know if this will help but what I do with mine is when I am watching tv I get one of them and brush them while I am sitting on the couch with them up there with me..:) |

I have a lil yorkie with a thin coat like that but it never got thicker, but it was really easy maintenance! One thing to remeber when she cowers or acts afraid, don't baby her. If you fuss when she acts like that she will think that is how to get your attention. Kenzie willa ct up and start to shake, we usually tell her to quit it and ignore her. The fear act stops and she tries being silly and happy and that gets more attention. |
I hope she wasn't abused. It is bad enough that she was neglected. |
She is a cutie pie! Maybe a puppy cut might work, she'll look adorable in one with a face like that. |

Thank you so much! |
I just thought I'd put your mind at ease a bit. Maddie used to do that "coward" thing when she was a tiny puppy and I'm sure she was never abused by anyone. It's likely that Candi is cowarding just because she doesn't yet completely trust you. I also hope she wasn't abused. Who could abuse a little doll like that! |
OMG she is so precious!!!!!!! I'm sure that with your love, she'll come around really soon:love: You might try Missing Link to help with her coat;) I look forward to seeing more pics of her, she is just too sweet:D! |
OMG That is the cutest little face. I agree with the love and attention to bring her out of her shell. Maybe after her seeing you with your other pup she will get to know you are a wonderful mom and want to be around you moreand not be so nervous. Good luck and congrats. |
Congrats on your new baby. Her face is gorgeous especially her eyes! I think a puppy cut will make her look all neat and good. |
How big is that sweet little girl? She looks so small. I think once she's with you a while and eating a good diet, her hair will probably fill in. I don't know how you came to get her but if they sent her to you dirty she probably wasn't taken care of or fed very well. I'm sure that all that's in the past now that she's with you. Once she's feeling at home with you and being taken care of properly she'll probably be a different dog. |
She is very small. Probably less than 3 pounds. I take her to the vet onThursday. She is so skinny. :( |
I hope she gets a good report from the Vet on Thursday! She is oh so darling!!! Congrats!!! |
She looks cute but with all your love and caring I am sure she will look beautiful in no time:thumbup: Hope she gets a good report from the vet!!!! Hugs and Kisses from Tinkerbell and I!!! |
Awww, my goodness, she is totally ADORABLE!! Although I will admit, she does look VERY different from the last pic! BUT - what a sweet, angelic little face she has! After a warm bath, and a good brushing - she should look even better though  :) Putting her on a good quality food will help also ;) And putting some Missing Link on top of her food wouldn't be a bad idea ;) But I can tell you this - whatever you do, it won't take much at all, because she ALREADY a total DOLL! :D |
Piper was very thin & loosing her hair when we got her. She had giardia, which causes anorexia. Which was causing her hair to fall out. Once we got her on meds & disease free, she started gaining weight & her hair came back. The Vet suggested Boiled chicken for protein. Her hair now is beautiful, but she turned into a piggy. She was 1.3 lbs at 14 weeks. Now at almost 10 months she weighs 6.4 lbs. Your baby is beautiful, hope the vet can determine whats up with her. |
Just a suggestion I saw on the Dog Whisper that with these types of situations you might want to take things in a different direction. He said you should sit on the floor with your back to them (when they are in there crate) do not look them in the eyes (and they should have on a leash, I think) and allow them to come to you. This develops trust from a untrusting abused animal. You might want to see if you can go to his website and see about ordering his tapes and books. The way he stated it love and affection are not enough... sometimes it doesn't do a neglected and abused dog any good. You can give them all the affection and love you can muster but it won't cure their fear. Hope this helps point you in the right direction for some answers and help. :) |
she is adorable. i hope the vet gives her a good report. where did you get her from? |
