Separation anxiety in a 2 yr old dog Chachi has started crying and Howling at the door when My Husband or I leave. He just started this about a month ago but it seems to be getting worse. This morning when My Husband left he howled and cryed at the door for 30 minutes. I am usually home with him all day so hes never really alone. When I leave to go to the store or somewhere he does the same thing. Does anyone know why he has started doing this and what I can do to help him. |
Oh dear, this happened at two years of age? Wow. Was there any traumatic event lately? I'm surprised since he has a "brother". Here's an article that might help. http://www.petstyle.com/dog/training...ainingArticles I was hoping this was just a puppy thing. Nancy |
I'm sure you've heard this before, but it has worked for me. We try to keep hellos and goodbyes short and sweet. I don't cuddle or give tons of kisses anymore. If I don't act like it's a big deal, then they don't either. It can be so hard though. I hope this helps. |
separation anxiety I agree. I have two Yorkies, a male and a female two years old. When you go away, just walk out the door. Don't look at the dog or talk to it. When you come home, ignore the dog completely, until it calms down. My female used to get all upset and start panting when I went away. I realized I contributed to this by fussing over her, blahh, blahh, blahh. Stay calm, usually the dog calms down within ten minutes after your leaving and fallls asleep anyway. These dogs are sooo smart, they pick up on your body language and seem to know exactly what you are going to do! Good luck |
Oh that website was helpful. I am battling this with Thor right now. Separation anxiety sometimes occurs when: - A dog has never or rarely been left alone. - Following a long interval, such as a vacation, during which the owner and* dog are constantly together. - After a traumatic event (from the dog?s point of view) such as a period of time spent at a shelter or boarding kennel. - After a change in the family?s routine or structure (a child leaving for college, a change in work schedule, a move to a new home, a new pet or person in the home). Poor guys is dealing with 3 of 4!! Chachi, how are things for you guys? |
How's Chachi's seperation anxiety??? Has it gotten better? Poor guy! Poor Thor too! Boy, changes are tough on these little ones! |

Then when my wife comes out of the bathroom after doing her makeup , Dolly knows she's about ready to leave and will follow her every step. We both leave together in the morning and just before we are to walk out the door she'll go to the food bowl and just chow down. She'll look up at us and start chowing down some more. It's so funny. I tell my wife to hurry up or I'll have to fill the bowl with food again. :) So it's a form of separation anxiety I guess but she stuffs her face instead of howling or barking. I hope Chachi will do better. I think everyone had some good suggestions. |
My trainer just recommended Rescue Remedy for Hallie. She is almost 5 and has been a little weird about me leaving for awhile. She's also a bit cranky in the evenings so I just started it. 2 drops twice a day. It might help, I'll let you know how Hallie does on it. |
Royce has SA it was really bad and its getting better ...what really helped is my attitude ( whenever im leaving I must not feel anxious as they are really smart and they can feel they are anxious ) so since i changed the way i feel about leaving ie: just grab my keys and dont worry about him...he stopped crying at the door . Hope this helps |
