My Baby Having a Baby!? So my Little Chloe just got her first period on December 14th. I was told that her period lasts for 2 weeks and that during this time she is experiencing a false pregnancy. Well, as of yesterday she was still experiencing some symptoms of "pregnancy" with her teets being EXTREMELY swollen. I never thought about the possibility of her being pregnant by my mothers "non fixed" 11 year old 85 pound Akita until I was told by a co-worker (and then later by my Vet) that "anything is possible". The vet said that although they cannot verify whether she is pregnant or not until she is on her 45th day of the pregnancy, they can spade her and that will "terminate" the pregnancy. Does this sound legit to everyone? I'm so confused and so upset! :( |
Oh wow, let's hope this is a false pregnancy. The other possibility would not be good at all. Were you planning on having her spade (sp?) in the future anyway or were you planning to breed her later? If you're not planning to breed, I would go ahead with the spay just to be on the safe side. Wishing you the best..... |

I completely agree. sounds like spaying her would be the best bet. |
Um I would def. no question have her fixed if she is pregnant by an 85 lb Akita. |
Two of my females had false pregnancies. And it lasted long enough for a regular pregnancy. But.... they weren't. All the signs were there, (even enough to make the vet wonder) but we waited and no babies. I was told that if they were going to have false pregnancies that it could happen for the first 3 heats and then they would grown out of it. But each pup can be different. When can they take x-rays and tell???? If pregnant, I would get her fixed. The pups will be way too big..... |
Well she can't take x-rays until she is 45 days into her pregnancy and that's almost 3/4 of the way. I wouldn't want to risk her getting hurt so I'm definitely going to get her spayed! Thanks for the well wishes everyone. |
I support your decision. I've kept my mouth shut until now |
omg please tell me your not serious!! why in the world would you even take a chance with a small dog in heat around a big male dog like that?!! i just read your going to have her fixed well that's the best thing for your small female dog along with those pups being aborted if there are pups, nasty as that seems but it needs to be done unless you want to chance losing your yorkie also from having pups wayyy too big! don't leave a small dog alone with a bigger dog in the 1st place, it could get killed not intentionally but it could happen. |
this is a joke, right???????? |
My Pippa had a false pregnancy too on her 1st (and only) heat. She had been with a little yorkie boy during her heat, when they scanned her they said no babies. We waited til the '9' weeks would have been up to be on the safe side and then had her spayed. I was sooo relieved!!! |
I really hope your baby isn't pregnant by an Akita. I can't even imagine how hard that would be for her :( |
No, this is NOT a joke people and I don\'t need to be chastized--I already feel bad enough!!! It was a mistake on my part and to be honest, I just didn\'t know enough about the heat process--this is my first dog ever. My mom watches my dog while I am at work and she is always with them and when she is not, she cages my dog. Is there a chance that it could have happened anyway? SURE. It\'s not l ike I INTENTIONALLY set her out to be put in harm\'s way. Anyway, thank you to those who offered support. |
I am sure your baby will be fine as long as you spay her. Best of luck. Hopefully its just a false pregnancy |

I hope so too! |
not sure why people are being so mean...that is not what this place is supposed to be about. nobody is perfect, these things happen. and then we need support and not criticism. |
