home haircut I've always taken my Yorkie's to the groomer, and had a short cut. Now I'm thinking about growing their hair out and just trimming them and doing maintenance myself. My questions are: Do I have to do something to their anal glands? How often? Can anyone recommend a good brand of scissors or trimmer? There are dvd's for sale about Yorkie grooming. Has anyone bought one, and are they worth the money? I am growing out their bangs so I can put bows in. Do you guys trim an arch between the eyes, or grow the whole thing out. Also should I trim the hairs that are going to poke them in the eyes, or grow that out? My dogs are three years old. Thanks for your advice Periwinkle |
I groom lillian myself.. I give her the puppy cut. I use regular haircutting people scissors. I trim the eyes, ears, the little butt hairs, and her face. Its pretty easy once you get used to it..I was pretty nervous at first but you get the hang of it. |
I can help with one question:laugh: The anal glands usually do NOT need to be expressed. If the dog eats kibble and their poo is nice and firm, that's all that is needed to keep the anal glands emptied;) You'll know they're bothering them if you see them "scooting" their butts on the carpet, or they will STINK like rotting fish, P U! I used to cut Starr's hair myself, but now that she's gone, I just havent' had the heart to do Luna's and Izzy's. So I take them to the groomer. I absolutely cannot cut their nails myself, the first time I tried with Starr, I cut it way too deep (she moved at the last second:eek:!) and it took me a few hours to get it to stop bleeding. I threw away the clippers right then and swore I'd never ever touch another pair of them. It still makes me nauseous to think about it, but that's just me:rolleyes: |

You're welcome and thank you too. Sorry, didn't mean to "bum out" your thread. Everything just reminds me of her and it just comes flying out of my mouth (I should say fingers:o ) Just remember, it's only HAIR and it will grow back if you mess it up:laugh: My husband always said that I did a better job than any of the groomers that we tried, give it a shot:D! |
