It just seems to me that in every thread ever posted about smaller yorkies its always small owners who have to defend and explain themselves. Its really not about the health because we all know the pros and cons of small and large. People have made statements OUTRIGHT STATING that having a small yorkie is not good and they should not be gotten because they have health issues, which is a statement that is NOT true. Its about the breeder. If you go out and get a poorly breed dog BIG OR SMALL it is going to have health issues. So when threads like this are started I feel like the underlying issue is far deeper then we are reading, otherwise we wouldn't keep seeing this issue pop up once a week. Have a happy and blessed day! |
JACKSON'S MOMMY, I don't understand why you feel like you have to defend tiny Yorkies. I understand that you love your baby to death, but no one is attacking him. Lots of us are on the same side; we all want responsible breeding. Most of the health and fragility issues I read about come from the owners of Tinies. You seemed to think, if anyone says anything negative they are bashing Tinies. People just want other people to make INFORMED choices. As far as rehashing the issue, I learned a lot from this thread; I understand more now about why someone wants the Ultra Tiny, and now realize there are other reasons besides them being a status symbol. For example, as some of you have mentioned the maternal instinct an ultra tiny can satisfy. You also must remember, many people read these threads and are not even members of Yorkietalk, they are just looking for information. In addition, there are new members everyday. If I can help influence a new purchaser of a Yorkie to look into the reasons why he wants an ultra small Yorkie then I feel I've done my job, again informed choices. What I really hope to influence are those people who think other people are jealous of them every time they hear something negative. It's like the person won't have to consider what the other person is saying because they can just attribute it to jealousy and then discard the information. I think the members of Yorkietalk show everyday that they are not jealous. The praise, love, and support they show each other is considerable. So please when you think someone one is hating (slang term) jealous, please consider the other alternative, they might just have a different opinion and you can't handle it. Nancy |

Nancy that was very well said.  Again - No one here puts down tinies - I've been here a long time and see people offering info for those new to yorkies and want a tiny but it's in no way bashing them. WARNING about them is far different than bashing and I seriously doubt anyone is jealous...I know for a fact I'm not - I LOVE them and wouldn't mind having one myself but I've always been perfectly happy with my girls and think most all people here can say the same - we Love yorkies here - big AND small .....if posting about the REAL dangers tinies can face helps someone make an informed decision about their next pet - then what's wrong with that ?? An example - cocker spaniels used to be THE Popular Breed - When they became popular - the breed was practically ruined - IF I saw someone wanting a cocker spaniel - I would def warn them about the chronic ear infections they have ....Since I HAVE a gorgeous cocker myself - (I had THREE Cockers actually) ... it doesn't mean I'm putting them down ...I'm just sharing what I KNOW to be true - ALL of my cockers were prone to bad ear infections....Tessa is now 12 years old and MANY many vet visits later -she's still having chronic ear infections. It's just something that this breed has issues with - It's the same with tiny yorkies - hypoglycemia and injuries happen far easier with tinies than a bigger yorkie - but it's not bashing them & certainly not jealousy when someone says that. |

You know what's funny? I think for the most part we are all in agreement and a lot of us are saying the same thing. I completely agree that the tinies have to be more protected against injury and I completely agree that people should be VERY educated before they take on the responsibility. Sugar is protected to ridiculous levels because I know he could be hurt physically. I also absolutely DO NOT think most people are jealous if they do not have a small yorkie. I had only a 10 pounder for three years and I certainly was never jealous. It's nothing to be jealous about. Having a small yorkie is not an achievement it's a decision and it's one anyone can make if they wanted to. |

Having a small yorkie is not an achievement it's a decision and it's one anyone can make if they wanted to. I agree with this whole heartedly. Not everyone wants that small of a dog. I have looked into getting one but was undecided if it would fit my lifestyle. I take My dogs on 1 mile walks every day. I dont think a tiny yorkie could keep up to that. That is why I prefer the 5-6 lb range yorkie. Some people have children and having a small yorkie and children is not a good idea. There are alot of reasons people may want larger yorkies |

That is so the truth! My Gracie LOVES walks. I swear she would walk a marathon is I could keep up but Sugar expects to be held. There really is a big difference at least in mine and it should be an educated decision because I think Sugar would drive most people nuts. I personally love it because I always wanted a cuddly, sweet dog and Gracie is all about, play with me or leave me the heck alone. I tried for 3 yrs to turn her into something she just isn't. I swear when I baby talk her she is rolling her eyes. She worships my husband however because he's all about playing and definitely doesn't try to baby her and I have Sugar to take all of my ooey gooey girlyness out on :p. I worried at first that Gracie would be jealous but I think she's like- thank God that crazy woman is finally giving me some peace! |
For those of you who actually answered this post respectfully I thank you. Perhaps I did not word the thread correctly when asking about the tinies or perhaps however it was worded it would still have been a problem for some. Afterall all is said and done I did learn more about the tinies. I was interested that's all. Period! For those of you who may know my name by now I am not one for being negative in any way. I love this site and have learned so much. For instance: If I now see a puppy weighing in at 6.5lbs at 14 1/2 weeks would I know it was going to be bigger than standard? LOL of course. Did I know it 2 1/2 yrs ago. NO I never saw a big Yorkie so when I purchased Buddy who knew he would become 13.5lbs! Do I care? NO of course not. He's my little guy no matter what he weighs. Point is I learned the difference from YT. That's all this thread was about at least for me. Learing about the little one's. I am not jealous, if I wanted one I would buy one no matter what the size. I did become upset when I saw so many of you bringing in negative posts but for the most part the other posts were very informative. Thanks guys, Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |

If a dog is tiny or large it is the right of that owner to have it and all that that intels. Just like large yorkie owners get offended by people making unkind comments so do small ones when people wonder why we would ever get such a small dog. So what's good for the goose is not good for the gander??? Obviously my responses are not being read clearly. This was not about giving someone an educational lesson to point out the good and bad faults, it was wondering why would you get a dog that has all these faults and problems and the fact they have become so popular. As far as jealously (may have spelled that wrong) I can seriously go back and pull some threads where people have said somethings about there large dogs vs anothers small that shows disappointment and touches of envy at how there dogs turned out, I AM NOT SAYING THEY DON'T STILL LOVE THIER DOG TO DEATH, so don't misquote me (in general). To educate someone is paramount to the success of any breed. I will do that as someone did it for me. If someone was inquiring about it I would be honest and upfront on the pros and cons. But I won't do it if someone is insulting a large or smalll yorkie. Someone once said Jaxson looked like a rat because he was so small. It took everything in me not to curse them out like they weren't a Child of God! I had to realize that that was ignorance and kindly but dead seriously told them I would not be driving a rat around in my car. Another point I would like to make is these post are not made by newbies you know. If someone was new here and asked these questions it maybe different. Anyway to each his own. Whether or not we disagree on a topic today and stand together on another one tomorrow I hold no ill feelings towards anyone and I will continue to add my 2 cents to serious discussions or issues on this board with the best for all Yorkies in my heart.:animal-pa |

I think one thing that often gets overlooked on here is the breeding. A lot of people assume if you have a tiny one its bad breeding or they will be unhealthy because they are so small and ultimately the breeder probably wasn't ethical in what they were doing and if you have a big yorkie none of the above applies to them. I don't know, I'm no expert but I'd say someone who breeds a yorkie over 7 pounds is just as unethical as someone who breeds a yorkie that is too small to be bred. I mean, my word, what about the people who breed 8 pound females with 7 pound males and come out with these 9 pound yorkies? I don't consider that good breeding. Where exactly did all of these large yorkies come from?? 7 pound and under yorkies? I kind of doubt it. I have nothing against the larger yorkies but they are not the standard and I for one firmly believe in keeping the standards of a breed. Otherwise, whose to say 20 years from now a yorkie won't look like a sheep dog?? I place no fault on the larger yorkies that are not within the standard, I place the fault with their breeders. Do they deserve to be loved and cared for and treated with as much respect as any other yorkie within the standard? Absolutely! But should they be bred and considered as fine a breeding material as one within the standard? No, I don't think so. But that goes for everything, color, shape, tempermant, etc. I think breeding should be done to better the breed and nothing more. What I'm trying to say is, just because a yorkie is bigger doesn't mean that it was "bred" better, in fact, depending on the weight of the mother and father it could've been bred worse. I'd rather have a tiny father and a standard sized mother than risk the mothers life by breeding her with a big father so I could get a big yorkie... For whatever reason, a lot of people take bigger to mean healthier and I'm sorry but in my opinion that just isn't true. |
