A little annoyed
 

Ok I always read on this forum about small or tiny yorkies being prone to all kinds of sickness and illness.

My main issue is this small yorkies are yorkies and are prone to illnesses that affect all yorkies regardless of size.

Can anyone name anything that is prone to the small ones exclusively? I doubt it.

I am a little tired and annoyed at hearing oh their subject to all kinds of sicknesses, when someone comes on this site asking about a small one.

I understand your position but at the same time you can't deny that the little ones are MORE likely to get sick or injured because they are sometimes not strong enough to handle the same things that bigger yorkies would. I don't think anyone is saying that the tinies are going to get a sickness big ones wouldn't, I think everyone means that they are more likely to have a more difficult recovery time, and may be more prone to a serious injury due to their size. There are more opportunities for tinies to get hurt and potentially not be strong enough to get over the smallest sickness.

I happen to disagree. If we are talking about puppies then I might agree, but a healthy dog is a healthy dog regardless of size. Most issues with sickness and injuries happen to pups not necessarily due to their size.

I agree that a healthy dog is a healthy dog doesn't matter the size... but I think that small dogs are prone to get a worse injury than a bigger dog in case of an accident...

My main point is when someone comes on this site inquiring about a yorkie a small one at that. The first response should not be "dont get one its going to be sick or hurt". It's not a true statement and it's not a fair one at that.

Well, I've only had my tiny Cali for about 2 months. BUT during that time, she has been to the ER vet once and gotten a cold two times. I could post more but I'm in the middle of a rush job at work. I'll be back later. :p

Plus, it will cost much more than spaying a regular size dog would (we're talking anywhere from $1,500 - $2,000). In addition, they will want to run a series of blood tests before the operation and keep her in the animal hopsital after the operation for a few days or until they feel it's safe to bring her home. In light of the high risk involved, we may not be able to get her spayed (which would leave her open to possibly getting cancer in the future -- just thinking of that breaks my heart).

I always have to be careful when she's playing with Codie and Tia. Even though Cali is tiny, she likes to play rough. She thinks she is a big dog and that really isn't to her benefit. She takes risks and I always have to be on my guard with her to keep her safe."

I agree. I know of someone whose small yorkie (3 or 4 lbs) broke her leg from jumping off of the back of a couch. My Abbie, who is 14 lbs does that occasionally but she's not as fragile so my heart doesn't stop when I see her jumping from the couch. Yorkies are also constantly under foot and it's easier to step on and injure one that is tiny. It doesn't mean that the tiny ones are not helathy but there are certainly things that can cause injury that are less likely in dogs than are larger

It's ok, you can disagree, but I think if you read many posts, not just on this forum but others, most tinies who may have the same injuries and sicknesses as any dog, take longer to recover, if at all. I have a little tiny myself, not super tiny but she's in the 4 lbs range. She doesn't get too sick but when she does it takes longer for her to recover and more vet visits to make sure. I also have to be careful with her at home, make sure she's not jumping up and down too much or being played with too roughly.

There is nothing wrong with telling someone who is interested in tinies that they can become injured easier than bigger yorkies because it is fact. Just look in the sick and injured section if you dont believe it. Also someones tiny on here about died when she dropped a calculator on its head. I can tell you neither of my yorkies would about die if a calculator was dropped on their head. There are many tiny owners on here that can tell stories of their tiny being hurt from jumping off of an ottomon or the couch.

My furbaby weights 1.9 kg, and she almost gives me a heart attack when she plays "kamicase" in the couch...:eek: :eek:

it's not the unhealthy aspect I see people saying as much as they're more FRAGIL and can get hurt easier - and if they do get sick, it can be far more serious than with a dog bigger dog - lots of really small yorkies are prone to hypoglycemia PAST the baby stage due to their size....plus the vet bills can be bigger ....much bigger judging from some posts I've seen. :eek:

I have friends who have tinies and they stress out over things I don't due to their yorkies size. I think you may be confusing WARNING people who want tinies with people complaining about them - From the zillions of posts I've read here..... what I see is people just offering warnings to people who may not know what it really involves - it's nothing against tinies ....they're adorable !!!

I agree with you! Tiny's can be just as healthy as standard size...however I have heard of and known of yorkies that were'nt able to be spayed or neutured because of their size...In the matter of fact, Sadie needed her last puppy shot and her rabies shot and the vet wouldn't give them both at the same time and....she wasn't all that small...Like most have said,,,,I have never read a post where someone has said all tiny's are sick just warnings of injuries and experiences they have had with a tiny one....after all...this is a forum where we come to learn...not pick apart a post.

I can agree with you here, I've often thought about venting over everyone talking about how sickly and fragile the tiny ones are. I do agree that you have to be more cautious with them and IF they do get sick you have to take them to the vet more than a bigger dog but they aren't like little a fragile piece of china that has to stay locked away in the china closet for fear it might break. My 4 pound boy jumped off the bed where he sleeps with me a few weeks ago and he was perfectly fine. That was at least a 3 maybe 3 1/2 foot jump and he had no problems. Scared me to death but he was perfectly ok. Both of my yorkies are "tinies" and I would dare say I've had less problems with them health wise than many people on here have had with their larger yorkies. That being said, I do know there are other people on here with tinies that have had a boat load of health problems. I think it comes down to your yorkie and their genetics and how you care for them etc.
I've incredibly careful with mine, my house is puppy proof and I probably do worry about them a little more than I would if I had a 7 pound yorkie.
But, my two are extremely healthy and when they want to play, especially with my little girl who is the smallest one, she plays rougher and harder and jumps and runs around like she's a 7 pound dog and she's perfectly fine. I think a lot of the time, people who don't have "tinies" read all the bad stories related to them and don't realize that not ALL tinies are the same. Yes, some are more prone to accidents and some are more sick but then there are some like mine, who are perfectly fine and have never had a broken bone or serious injury their entire life.
