Question about Emergency Vets? I don't really understand about using an emergency vet vs using your regular vet. The there are 6 vets at the animal clinic I use. All six are incredible -- highly skilled vets with great people skills. I love them all. When I have an after hours emergency I call the clinic, their answering service takes my name and number and forwards it to the "vet on call" who returns my call within minutes. If the problem warrants an emergency visit then I just meet the vet at the practice -- The whole process from initial call to getting to the clinic usually takes no more than 20 to 30 minutes. The charges have always been very reasonable -- to date, I have never been charged more than mroe than $200 an emergency visit -- I was billed for the amount due during the regular end of the month billing cycle. Is this so unusual? |
Our old vet didn't offer on-call service. They closed for the night, and that was that. So the Emergency Vet is there just in case. Why they have to charge astronomical prices is beyond me, though, I guess they don't get enough business to pay the bills, so the patients that they DO get have to pay a bundle. Just like the human ER:rolleyes: We also now have a new vet that has 4 vets in the practice and one is always on call and will meet you at the clinic, if necessary. I haven't had any need for after hours care, thank God, but it's nice to know that they are there. They will also bring home a critical patient and don't believe in leaving an animal unattended if they just had surgery:thumbup: |
My vet owns his own practice so he isn't there 24-7 and there isn't anyone else to take his place. We have an emergency clinic that's open from 5pm-9am 7 days a week. I like the peace of mind knowing that it's there if I need it. |
My vet does not have after hours care. The ER Hospital is 5 minutes from my house and they are open 24/7 and have specialists on duty. They are expensive but well worth it when you are in an emergency situation. Years ago the vet did have emergency service but they stopped it. |
My vet has no emergency service however there is one 5mins from me. It costs $125.00 to walk through the door and anything else is seperate. Bill to be paid when talking the dog home. Up front cash or credit card is the only thing accepted! Carol & Buddy |
We have 3 vets around here 1 I will never step foot into again 1 I love and the other is never open. If my girls get hurt or sick after 4:30 it's off to the ER. Oh and weekends too.. |
There are tons of vets here, but they all close at around 7:00 so the ER Vet Hospital is the only place to take them after hours. Yep, they charge and arm and a leg. They are pretty good about late night phone calls though. I had to call a week or so ago when Tinkerbelle ate a croton leaf! They gave me good advice over the phone and no charge. |

We have our regular vet that we go to for their regular visits or if the medical problem could wait. But like everybody else's regular vet clinics , ours is not open 24/7. Their clinic hours are from 8:30 am-6:00 pm from Mon-Sat. only. So when our babies had an emergency a year ago we had to take them to the emergency vet hospital and they are really more expensive than our regular and they require you to pay half of the estimated cost a front and pay the rest before you could take your babies home. Which was a nightmare! Our regular vet clinic always allows us to pay a deposit of 20% and pay the rest in installment.:) |
My vet owns his own practice as well, so there are no other vets. If there is an after hours emergency you can page him and he calls you back. I had to page him once at 4am on a Sunday and had to meet him for an emergency c-section and he only charged me 600.00, and there were complications. So I'm sticking with him even though his staff is horrible! |
