Mating age?? Ok this maybe a stupid question but at what age are males ready to mate?? Cause this lady asked me if i was interested in breeding Wyatt with her girl...but i dont know if he is ready...and also she is 6 lbs and Wyatt is 2.8 lbs right now...it that safe?? Sorry if this offends anyone but i need to know!! |
You're probably going to get a lot of response to this one. How old is Wyatt right now? Why would you want to breed him? Many times it changes their behavior and he might start marking in the house. I don't think breeding is nearly as risky for the male but he could contract an STD. |
Oh yeah and aslo...she lives in Orange County and i live in Rialto...so i would go to her right?? And if so im not leaving him by his self..so i would have to get a hotel room...or how long does it take?? OMG i dont know how to even go about this!! |

If it wasn't so late, you'd be getting lots of feedback on this subject. I don't think it's a good idea at all. Why are you putting him through this? I've heard that some males don't perform in a strange place. Letting him "do it" just once isn't doing him any favor at all. |
Im not putting him through anything...thats why i am asking questions first...and i didnt want to just take is ability to breed away withot one shot at it....i dont want to hurt him...thats why im asking questions....i havent made any kind of plans yet  :( |
You are considering putting him through this, and I think it's great you're asking about it. Since I am the only one replying to you, I am merely expressing my opinion. We like to think of our dogs like little people which they aren't. According to your train of thought, I guess I deprived Debbie of being a mommy one time before spaying her. Do you think she forgives me? Sorry for being sarcastic, but I'm trying to get my point across and have never been accused of beating around the bush. |
No its no problem..please express yourself..thats what i need...i was considering and was not..only beacuse i dont want anything bad to happen to him..i would never be able to forgive myself...and im not trying to treat him like a human..but its like i would never know how his puppies would look like...im not doing this to get money..i would rather have another puppy..but i have to look further into this breeding thing with him..cause he is my baby and i cant put him through anything harsh! I dont want his personality to change either..he is a great dog and he is well mannered...so thanks for staying here to help me...and now i have things to consider..like i said i havent made a choice but now im leaning towards NO |
I'm glad I didn't hurt your feelings. I just don't think it's a great idea but I'm sure some people who know a lot more about breeding will be happy to give you their opinions. I'm sure this question has been asked many times here, so if you feel like it, you could probably put in a search and find a lot more answers. |
How old is Wyatt?? A male dog is ready to mate anytime but you should not breed him until he is atleast a year old. If he is AKC I believe he has to be atleast 8 months old to sire a litter, but still it is best to wait until he is a year old because he will be fully mature then and so will his sperm. There is alot of testing done for breeding or even studding out your male. You would have to have him tested for liver shunt, laxatating patellas, check his heart, lungs and have a brucellious (sp?) test done to make sure he doesn't have any std's he can give to the female. This works both ways, the female should be checked for all of these things also. Also, you want both female and male to be good quality yorkies before you even think about breeding them. Usually you have the female come to you because the female is more protective in her own terriortory and by bringing the female to the male she will be more willing and more at ease. Of course this means the stud owner has alot of work to do and alot of information to learn. They have to watch the dogs, you should always be there when they mate to make sure nothing goes wrong and that they do tie. You also have to have a stud contract written up such as whether you will be paid a fee or pick of the litter and what you will do if the mating results in no puppies. Again like the above poster mentioned, breeding him may change his attitude and personality even if you breed him just once. And once bred, neutering will have little effect on his new personality. Good luck with what you decide and never be afraid to ask questions!! |

I would insist on all of the testing and vet checks for both your male and the prospective female. Get a vet read on the safety. If you do get the vet's okay to go ahead with it and decide to do so -- best of luck on the litter! |
breeding Do your sweet boy the best health favor you can ever do for him....neuter him. If you decide not to do this and breed him..please have the bitch tested for brucellois and other STD's that can destroy his health, even kill...and never go the bitch...they come to you. |
Thanks for all the advice...i think im not going to do it...im too scared of something happening to him...and i really dont know that lady..so i was asking questions before i told her yes or no...but i want what is best for him and thats his health...he doesnt need to have a litter..even though i would love to have one of his children..but it is not needed...so i thank everyone for there opinion...i understand now!!!! :) THANK YOU ALL  |
If you plan to breed him even once male sure you have the owners of the female tested, you dont want your little guy catching any thing. I think the age is around 8-9 months for a male. They do say once the male breeds he may start to mark(lifting his leg to pee on things even inside the house) I have a male and a female and every time shes in heat he starts marking. |
