Fleas out already!!!!

I just heard the gardening folks talking yesterday - that they hoped our extended hours below freezing here in central Texas - 50-something hours - I know I know those of you in the north are thinking WHAT!!! :eek: only 50 hours, but that is a long time for us. Anyway the gardening folks were speculating that the fleas may have frozen. That may not be the case if there are live fleas in OHIO!!! However, I bet the Ohio fleas are cold hardier than our whimpy ole Texas fleas! :D

I sure hope so!! Has your baby been around another other pets? That may be where she got the flea - even at the groomers!!!

Anyway, I sure hate to hear about fleas in the winter! Summer time is bad enough.

I also live in Ohio and i saw a flea the other day,Ive also seen flies, I guess our mild winter has 'tricked' alot of things,I hope my flowers dont bloom to soon.

Its weird because I had a little silkie that was sold to me as a yorkie, i introduced her on here along time ago but anyways. She would get out of our fence & chase the deer & squirls, well I rehomed her a month ago after a lot of work, she was a mill dog but found a great mom for her. A deer actually somehow opened a large gate & came in to our fenced back yard, it had a little harder time getting out. Then I went out and a couple squirls were back there & then ran under the fence like they just knew exactly were to go. I think they are looking for her. It kinda breaks my heart, but I have been emailing the new mommy & she assures me everything is fine..anyways...i wonder if those animals may carry fleas & brought them in the yard. I usually buy the stuff for the yard & do around & in the fence plus i use revolution but skip a couple months thru the winter if possible since it is a pesticide. Got the revololution on so no more fleas just winter dry skin itch now :rolleyes:

I found a few on Rosie this week too. I couldn't believe it.
What can we use that is effective,in place of frontline,etc?

I live in Florida and the fleas never die. My vet has me using Sentinel. Goes after all the worms and the fleas. It's made by Novartis. They also have a product called Capstar that kills the fleas that are on the dog now. There is a weight restriction.

I once found a little kitty infested. Talcum powder or baby powder clogs their airway and they die.

I'm the "natural flea remedy lady" on this board. :D

Every summer when fleas are at their worst, I use beneficial nematodes (you get then at a natural or organic gardening store - and you can order them from natural gardening websites). These are microscopic organisms that you spray on your yard in the spring, after freeze danger. They live in the soil and eat flea eggs so that fleas cannot live in your yard - that is 9/10ths of the battle. If you live in a cold climate - you will have to reapply every spring - but here in Texas, I can go 2-3 years without reapplying. Another benefit is that the nematodes also eat fire ant eggs - so you won't have any fire ant beds in your yard either and that is important for those of us who live in the south.

Of course, fleas can come into your yard from other animals or the neighbor animals. What I do for that is to sprinkle diatamaceous earth (you can get it at a natural or organic gardening store) around the perimeter of the yard. It looks like powder and feels like powder but it is actually ground up sea shells and when fleas walk through it (from another yard to your yard) it cuts their legs and their body fluid runs out and they die. It won't hurt your babies at all if they step in it. I also sprinkle it on my roses when bugs start eating on them.

Anyway, beneficial nematodes will keep fleas out of your yard and diatamaceous earth will keep them from walking into your yard. Of course, it won't stop a flea from jumping onto your babies from another dog or animal. But this will just be one flea, an occasional one and you won't have the continual problem. Also, if you take the carpet out of your house, there will be few or no place for fleas to reproduce - and if they can't reproduce in the yard (the nematodes take care of that) and they can't reproduce in your house, then the flea problem is minimized without harmful chemicals on the yard or on your babies.

The only time I use Advantage or something like that is when we travel extensively. We have a doggie door and the boys go in and out all day. We have outside dogs on both sides of us and we never ever have flea problems since I have started using nematodes and diatamaceous earth (DE). Of course, you do have to reapply the DE after a big rain.

did you know that revolution is not considered a pesticide it is a drug that is why I like it better plus it covers mange, ear mites, and heartworm, petshed is also a cheap website for flea stuff check it out

Does the above also take care of chinch bugs. Being from Texas you probably know about those. I used to have a company come out every other month and spray our yard. I have put them on hold since I got Brissy in December. I just don't know what to do. If I cannot kill the chinch bugs that are so bad here in Florida my lawn will become a mud pit as these creatures can eat a lawn in a matter of weeks. Any knowledge you have on a natural remedy so that I don't have to use poison would be greatly welcome.
