Is 2 better than 1 ??? Ok... I am a new Yorkie mommie...my Daisy is only 4 1/2 mo old and she is such a joy. I have to leave her home during the day which I do not like... I would much rather be home with her and have enjoyed the time I've gotten to spend with her over the holidays. I am however now considering getting ANOTHER Yorkie and I have several questions... is 2 better than 1? Will the new puppy be company or a pain to Daisy? I travel quite a bit and take Daisy w/ me.... is 2 going to too much to handle on the plane? What about everyday life? Should I get a girl or boy (I do not want to Breed Daisy) Also, Daisy is pretty small.... under 2lbs at this point...and only expected to get to 3-4lbs... so I have a concern that if the new yorkie is larger, he or she could hurt her.... Can anyone comment on what it's like to have more than one - and work and travel as well.... I would love to get another one, but want to enhance my life not complicate it. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful in my decision making process. Daisy's mom.... |
i would also love to hear what people have to say... we are constantly throwing around the idea of getting layla a sister and i'd be interested to know what the most dificult part is of adding another one... somehting you didn't forsee happening.. that way we with just one can be prepared :) |
Congratulations on your new baby! Having one Yorkie is an absolute joy. But having two is even better. Prada was 3 when we got Dolce. It took them a little while to get a long (it might have been the age difference) but now they love each other. As far as work, I would love to take them with me but of course I can't. They are in their crates when I leave for work and then a few hours later my daughter comes home for lunch and they are out until she goes back to her job. Then I'm home shortly after that. I feel (my own opinion here) that it is safer for them to be crated. I live in a old house and there are lots of little places they can get into and under. They don't seem to mind either. I have their crates all posh and cozy. We take the girls out of town with us when we go on vacation. There are a lot of hotel/motels, etc. that are pet friendly. You just have to do a little research. They have never been on a plane, but they are great in the car (for the most part). I hope this helps. |
Having 2 the same age to play with is wonderful. My 2 yorkies play from morning until night. I think having 2 close to the same size is a good idea so you don't have to worry about them hurting each other. Mine get kind of rough sometimes but they are both male. |
I have :embarasse five..... And they all get along! (Yorkies are so addicting!) :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: |
Yes, two is definitely better:thumbup: The only drawback I can see is with flying. If you are flying alone, then it would be almost impossible to get "tickets" for two dogs, they only allow 2 dogs per flight (most airlines), for FAA regulations, and one dog per person, also one dog per crate. A lot of airlines have stopped in-cabin animal flights now and want them to be in the baggage area:eek: So if you're travelling with someone,it might be do-able, but otherwise might be a juggling act. I dunno, maybe call a few airlines and see what their policies are, I'm just going by what Delta told me a couple years ago when we flew with Starr. But YES, you will love having two. Twice the work, but quadruple the fun;) |
They say that yorkies are like Lay's Potato Chips...You can't have just one!!!! :p :p :p I have two and I can definately say that 2 is so much more fun that just having 1. It took my older yorkie about 2 weeks to really get used to his new little sister, so at first it might seem like it's a pain, but now they are the BEST of friends!!!!! I don't see any downsides to having 2 except the additional cost of vet bills. Other than that, everything is a positive! They will definately keep each other company.   |
I have 2 and I love 'em! Hi! I got Teddy on Nov 18, 2006.. and then I HATED leaving Ted alone by himself, so I got him a playmate on Dec 23, 2006. And I have to say after the bickering he did the first few days, they ABSOLUTELY love eachother. As i type they are laying on my VERY EXPENSIVE UGG BOOTS (which they have now claimed as their own.. so much so.. that i have to buy another pair!) and sleeping together. You will not regret getting another puppy for your daisy! I know I didn't when I got Theresa for Teddy! Hope this helps! Ashley |
One more thing.. You commented about work and travel.. I don't work, I'm a full time student getting ready to graduate and then start law school in the fall.. but I feel so much better leaving them alone by themselves. As far as travel.. its a little harder traveling with two yorkies instead of one.. BUT I can honestly say that I bring both of my babies every where. I am so happy that I got two (from the same breeder) that have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with traveling in cars. They have been to san francisco, berkeley, el cerrito, etc, and never had any problems. But they won't feel so alone, so getting your baby a playmate is always a bonus! Ashley |

You're asking alot of good questions. You'll make the correct decision for your :aimeeyork family. |
Well I say if you can get one I say go ahead, I am dying to get another one!!! Just remember its twice of everything (food, medical bills, monthly treatments, etc.) Hope you get another one :) |
I got my second when my first was almost a year old. I absolutely love having two. They play so much together. I leave them in my kitchen when I am at work and they keep eachother entertained all day. I would never have only one again. |

THANKS for all the positive comments....I have talked to the breeder that I got my Daisy from... he has NEW PUPPIES!!! That will be ready in 8-10wks!!! And there is another breeder (that my friend knows) that has puppies ready NOW!!! OHHHHH NOOOOO - decisions, decisions..... Which is better.. 2 females, or a mix or each??? |
Is 2 better than 1? YES, yes, yes! :) We got our second about 6 weeks ago and it's really the best decision we ever made aside from getting our first yorkie in February 06. Topher (our first and such a loveable, snuggle bear) has become so much more well behaved now that he has a little sister. (He was just over 1 yr old when we got his sister). He's not bored anymore so he definitely gets into less trouble! ;) Sophie, she's almost 18weeks old, has brought so much joy into the house...and she just ADORES Topher. The only downside I can see would be travelling with two. I can see that being a bit more difficult, but as with anything else, it's all in the planning. There are ways, I'm sure, that you could do it that would make it less stressful. As far as difference with size and one hurting the other...Topher is around 10lbs and Sophie just over 3...a huge difference! LOL You do have to keep an eye on them so that the play doesn't get too carried away, but for the most part we have yet to have a problem with this. If anything, Sophie is the one to watch because of those sharp little teeth! She puts Topher in his place if he gets too rough so he knows his limits with her. All in all it's been such a joy having two. Twice the yorkie kisses, twice the snuggles, twice the laughter and twice the love. How can that be a bad thing??:) Good luck with your decision. It's not one to take lightly (it's a decision that you have to live with for 15+ years) so make sure that you are making it for the right reasons and that everyone in the household (if there are others) is on board. I hope this was helpful. |
Two is better. We just got a brother and sister, and they are a blast. We absolutely love them. On the one hand you have twice the love, on the other hand you they can keep themselves entertained. Thus, you can spend the time with them that you want to, and they keep themselves occupied for the rest. And trust me, once they like each other.... they WILL keep themselves occupied. I would go around to some different breeders, try to find one the same size... and see if there is a way of the two of them meeting to make sure they like each other. Either way, it would be a good idea to get your puppies spayed/neutered. |
