leaving food/water in crate? Do you all think it's okay not to leave food and water for my dog while i'm at work during the day? We keep him in his crate with a divider so food and water won't even fit in there with him and his toys. We feed him 3 times a day - 8am, 1pm, and 6pm so that's about the only time he gets food/water. Our trainer at Petsmart told us not to leave it out all the time and not any after 7pm so we're not having to take him outside all night (which has worked great!) Sometimes we do give him some water after 7 though, just not a whole lot. We've been doing this since he was 8 weeks old (he's almost 15 weeks now) and he's always seemed fine. I was just wondering what you all do? |

If it were me...I wouldn't feed him in his cage...if you have to leave him in it all day how will he go to the bathroom? You really don't want him using his crate for eating, sleeping and pee and pooping. Do you have a room (like kitchen or bathroom) that you could block him in? Lillie is 6 1/2 months old she still gets into to much mischief if left alone..even though she has her big sister Sadie around (Sadie is 6 lbs! real big!!) I use a baby play pen..I put her pee pad, food, bed and a toy in there for her...I only use her crate for sleeping.. this is what I do...I'm sure you will get other suggestions. Good Luck! |
Yes I agree with BLowry I wouldn't put the food and water in the crate because that may cause your pup to have to poop and pee in the crate the three times you mentioned you feed him/her is fine so you don't have to leave the food in the crate......I also suggest getting a playpen.....I have one for Bailey and when I do find a job and go to work  that is what Bailey will be in with his puppy pads, toys, bed. What I was suggested in the Petsmart training classes is to give him one of them king kong toy things with the food in the middle that will keep your pup occupied. I also use the crate as just for sleep time at night.....These are just suggestions..Hope all goes well :) |
Water should always be available at all ages 24/7. He is still a baby and growing so I would also leave food out for him. I would also get him an exercise pen to be during the day. He will then have room for everything such as a nice comfy bed in one corner, food and water always available, pee pads in another corner and lots of toys, a chewy like a bully stick while you are gone at work. Ughh, I do not agree with the Petsmart trainer, water should always be available... Good Luck on your baby! |
Yea yorkieaddict is right you should have water available at all times so put that in the playpen :) |
Debbie is gated off in the kitchen when she is alone but that is only because she would set off the alarm. I have always left her food, water and a pad and she is pretty self sufficient. This works out well because if I ended up having to stay away from home longer, I don't have to worry about her needing any of those things. |
First, Congrats on your new baby! Riley is 9 month old. She stays in an Xpen in the kitchen (w/toys, bed & water) during the day. Someone is always around, in & out, to walk her & of course she gets a treat each time she goes potty. About 7pm-8pm she goes for a quick walk & she goes in a small (plastic) carrier for the night. She sleeps all night. She wakes about 6:30am. She's never had a problem going thur the night without water, BUT... when she was very young I'd give her NutriCal last thing at night & first thing in the morning. |
Mine have food and water available to them 24/7. At night they go in a crate, not all of them do, both some of them and it is the only time they are ever in a crate. Even them I give them food in their crates and a water bottle. I have not once found that it made them want to go to the bathroom more. But if you are leaving them for a long period of time, I would get an expen or gait him in a room. He needs the exercise and room for it and should be left with toys, pad, food and water. |
I have an expen and I leave her food and water out for her to have but she also has a pee-pad in her pen along with her bed and a few toys. |
