One of my sons raised pits for a couple of years. He had a male, very intelligent, who was well trained and behaved. This dog never had a problem until one day my DIL's cat escaped from the house. Samson killed the cat with 2 shakes. I could never imagine Samson killing anything, he was raised as a pet, but I was wrong and I believe it's in the genes of the pb. My son no longer raises pits. He gave it up when he and my DIL decided to try to have children......Thank God!! |
ok after reading this thread i also would like to add something i had a chow for a year and he was fine with my family members. but anyone outside my household he would have attacked if he had a chance. and because of this i couldn't keep him. the breed was band from my neighborhood. i couldn't walk him or anything. but he was the sweetest dog... with the family. he was an indoor dog but lived outside during the day. he seemed to prefer it out there. i think he thought he could better protect us there. some teens used to cut through my yard ... lets just say they go around now! ;) but we did not teach him to do that he just was very protective. my MIL has a poodle/ maltese mix... he is a small dog... he bite my niece once for no apparent reason. just attacked her. so... small dogs attack too. why do people allow others opinions irritate them so that they retaliate with comments. if you don't agree with something someone says say so... but if you feel they were rude about so what! ya'll get heated on here sometimes. dang! its ok for them to say what they say they way they wanna say it just like its ok for you. just let it go. chill ya'll. woo woo woo :D |

Hey V! I agree with you and with alot of what others have posted...I'm not sure if it's all of mass but around where I live you can't get homeowners insurance if you have a Pit..and alot of people with Rotties have a very high insurance rate on their homes. And like you ....I nearly have a heart attack if I see a pit. I know these poor dogs have gotten a bad rap and I KNEW what was going to happen when this thread was posted! This type of thread(among some others) seem to bring out the worst in people...However...everyone here is entitled to their opinion and nobody here should be rude to anyone. If this breed is the "sweetest" dog then why are there so many attacks? I know alot has to do with the owners but I do not believe that this is just the owners fault and lack of training...these dogs have been bred for years to fight...Just like our little furbabies were bred for ratting...even though they haven't ratted in years look what happens when they see a squirel or chipmunk. IMO...I could never just one...they just make me very nervous. The breeder I bought the girls from also breeds Rotties....I love the breed..she has one female that stays in the house with the Yorkies...she is the sweetest dog you could meet..then their are those in the pens that would rip you apart if they got loose...Would I ever own one??? I don't know..even though I love the breed they (like the Pits) are a very strong muscular dog that could do alot of damage..Personally...I feel they shouldn't allow Pit breeding and "this is MY OPINION!" Now....no jumping on me! and I not talking about you Villette!!! I didn't agree with you I added some things LOL...kinda got carried away! |

It might work but what if it didn't? I personally wouldn't take the chance. I would NEVER let Brutus near a pit or a very large dog anyway and I don't care how "socialized" and "sweet" they were. You read to many bad stories about them. I don't even think they're an attractive breed and no offense to anyone but with so many dog breeds to choose from why choose a dog with such a bad reputation? And if you get the pit and keep it outside would you then let your yorkie near it? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen in my opinion. |

I think just about any breed of dog may bite -- the difference comes when one leaves a scratch or tiny puncture and one rips the face up or the jugular out. This is a subject that will always have two sides. People who have always been around them will always extol their virtues and those who know of or have been moved by a child's death or disfigurement will think them too dangerous. I would never be able to live with myself if my choice in a dog wound up costing an innocent child their life. I won't ever take that chance. |

It's the same around here, except it either goes up, or you can't get home owners insurance. It's also like that with Dobermans, Rotts, and I forgot what else, but it's with a few different breeds. |
you can't bite peoples head off for feeling the way they do. and even if they are stating their opinion why not listen to what they are saying rather than how they are saying it. i'm just saying You are absolutley right. |
Get ready cause I am jumping in this feet first:p I have a GSD(German Shepherd) & 4 little yorkies(1 morkie) but I can tell you that Max is the sweetest dog in town, my biggest concern is he is so big he likes jump and uses his paws to play, he is only a 10 month old 110lb puppy, so NO I will not let him play with the little ones, he could hurt them really bad not meaning too..Max is well behaved he has been in doggie training camp for over a month and is very much under control, but they are dogs and like to play just like my yorkies use there mouths and paws to play...So he doesn't get to play with them yet...I am hoping when he is older he will get all of his "puppy playing" out and just chill around them, but we will see..and YES Max stays outside most of the time and I have a problem with people stay why have him if you going to keep him out, Well for the record He is the one that wants to be outside most of the time... I try to get him in alot and he rather be outside...Off my little box....I would say be very careful.....:) |
Look I know that I was going to have DIFFERENT oppinions and I was OPEN to hear ALL of them thats WHY I POST. I am not getting rude with anyone so therefore your post is IRRELEVANT.....why are you bashing me saying that I should of known that I would get all kind of answers. I KNEW THAT this is an OPEN FORUM...I appreciate everyone who replies back and the only thing I wrote back in saying was that I think a dog can have a GREAT life in the backyard and not all dogs are meant for the HOUSE..and THATS MY OPINION and that was IT! I DO respect YTers you should check yourself before you start telling me that I need to respect others opinion JMO :) Quote:

chows either. i personally wouldn't get a pit just cause of the stories i have heard. and i love my human babies more than dogs. i can always get another dog.. i can't replace my babies. but to each his own. they seem sweet enough... kind of goofy even. is it also that if you raise them with other dogs as puppies their temperment is calmer and more sweet as far as other dogs go? or is that just wishful thinking!? ;) cause if Moon (my sister's pit) doesn't calm her tail down she is not allowed over anymore!!! |
To everyone that posted..........I value everyone opinions and have read ALL OF THEM.........I will carefully take into consideration everyone thoughts and in the end I will do what is best for me, my husband, and Bailey. Your statements helped me out a bunch! :) And I know everyone is only trying to state whats best....Thanks Again  |
Adie finished her first classes at Petsmart just before Christmas and there were three pit bulls in the class with her. All three had trouble keeping their eyes off of her and I can't say their expressions were friendly. One of the owners had to constantly be reminded to pay attention to his dog. His dog had Adie's head in his mouth TWICE! I was petrified both times because I know how powerful those jaws are. This was a 6 month old dog! The instructor is a bully fan and works for the pit bull rescues. Even she was concerned. I'm not telling you what your decision should be but I did want to tell you about our experience. Good luck. |
This is endless This is a discussion that can go on and on and on. I personally, think ANY dog can be vicious. In my lifetime I have come across more mean smaller dogs than bigger dogs. Of course no one thinks twice about them though, because they really can't do any damage. It's like getting hit by a small cavalier or a hummer...what's going to do more damage? Pitbulls have gotten a bad rap, but not all are bad. Just like I learned not all small dogs are mean little ankle biters, I wish more people would realize that not every pitbull is going to maul a person if they get a chance. I really do feel bad for this breed :( I think it all depends on the lines that the dogs come from. I don't think it's fair to hate a whole breed and want to ban it because of some who got breed when they shouldn't have been, and ended up in the hands of the wrong owners. |

I really want to like them but I swear their the one dog that just turns me into a statue. But in their defense - I don't think enough people treat them as well as they should and their natural agression just comes out. My uncles pitt was such a big baby - I didn't know to be scared of him back then and really had no reason to be. I'd hate to see a breed banned though. BUT - then again - if my child ormy yorkies ware attacked :( :( knock on wood....(Man I sound like my mother with that one) ......I don't know how I'd feel.:( |
I forgot to say a couple of things.... I am a mail carrier and I can tell you from experience of 10 years, that the smaller dogs are worse that the big dogs for biting...but every dog will protect its property, even my yorkies will go nuts if they hear someone outside, second If you going to get a big dog no matter what breed you need to get it trained...I had Max professional trained, which I went out on 4 times a week and was trained with him but he stayed there for a month and is going back for more training...The reason being, I put him in dog obedience class and he did really good, but I realized to have a dog of his size and reputation, because they are very protective of there family, I was going to have to get professional help, cause I would hate to see him bite anyone...So if you do decide to get one look into all the avenues you need to do for you and your boyfriend and yorkie, only you can make the right decision for your family...:) |
  RIGHT ON RAE RAE!!! :D |

BTW I don't think anyone meant you were being rude -- it was another's booing and sarcasm that was being referred to. I had a couple of people very nicely disagree with my opinion on this. No problem. We just won't all agree on this issue or a dozen others. But I am only the boss of me -- and not even that if Ben and Sadie are on a tear -- lol -- so good luck in your own deliberations! You should hear my house around election time -- we have a mixed marriage -- a Democrat and a Republican -- and somehow we respect each other through it all. |

Maybe heated wasn't the right word...sarcastic would be the better word... I also know a couple of people that own pits...and they shouldn't...to be quite honest...I love all animals and do feel bad for this breed but, because they WERE bred (and some still are) for fighting it just makes the breed look bad..I just have a hard time trusting them...All dogs (pedigree) are know for something wether it be their gentle nature or aggressiveness, hard to potty train, hyper or laid back...Pits just happen to be one of those breeds that are known for being aggressive...I'll tell ya...I would much rather be bitten by one of my little ankle biters than latched onto by a Pit! And I love ya too V!...LOL |
I wouldnt let a pit bull anywhere near my babies, skin and fur!, the one that killed the five year old girl here a few days ago didnt just 'bite' her and she died, it went for her throat! I just don't get wanting to take a chance like that. OK yes theres lots of you saying you have or know of sweet natured pit bulls, but personally NOOOO WAY! and if someone moved next door to me with one i'd put up the highest fence ever to keep my family safe. this may be a bit controversial... but i read in our paper today a journalist saying the problem in the UK is the type of 'man' wanting to own a pit bull. She said 'the rich bully boy bigs himself up with a macho sports car, his poorer brother invests in a different sort of growling beast.' I guess i'm just lucky my 'macho' man is comfortable with his masculinity and LOVES YORKIES!!!! :p |

OMG that's the cutest picture ever!!!! Rocky gets along great with my moms boxer, Gizmo. Gizmo lets Rocky push him around, he takes his treats, his bones, chews on his ears...and Gizmo just lets him! The only time Gizmo gets angry is when Rocky tries to take this toy I got him for Christmas. It's a plush tree and when you squeeze it it sings "Oh Christmas Tree"...Gizmo loves that toy and that's the only time I have ever seen him growl at Rocky, but even then Gizmo will grab the tree and go into another room. Would I ever leave these 2 alone though..No! Just with the size difference, I would be afraid Rocky might get hurt on accident, so I'd rather not risk it. I leave them alone like if there in the living room and I'm in the kitchen, or if I gotta step outside for a few minutes, but I wouldn't leave them a lone for a long time and if I wasn't right there. |

i did warn it was controversial :) I hope and pray that as your little baby is only 8 weeks so they obviously havent been together long that all remains great and happy between them. Can i just ask tho and this is an honest question, not sarcastic, why would you choose a pit bull? what characteristics of the breed attract people? (other than the ones who get them cos they are macho, which i know you said wasnt your reason) also will you ever trust leaving the 2 dogs alone together? and if not doesnt that take away the benefit of having 2 dogs, and just cause problems? |
