Full bloodwork? I am going to get Siu Pao neutered and am thinking of doing a bloodwork before neutering. my question is, is there a such thing as full bloodwork and normal basic bloodwork? Which bloodwork should I be doing before neutering? Does a full bloodwork includes a heartworm result as well or that is a different thing? Another question is, my friend has a Cocker Spaniel and she is getting spayed too. She asked about bloodwork and the doctor said her puppy doesn't need one before spaying and said that a bloodwork is not important???? Does my vet (we go to the same vet) has a problem or Cocker Spaniels are healthier in nature? |
Something doesn't sound right there. I have never heard of any vet that will not require blood work on the dog before they sedate them for a procedure. Lex will be neutered Friday morning and we had his blood work done two Saturday's ago. My vet will not do any sort of sedation without the blood work. I know that the blood work checked a ton of things and cost me $25. |
I would guess that your vet is just being careful because of thre size of your dog. Bloodwork is optional around here unless a problem is anticipated. I'd get the bloodwork just to be on the safe side. :) |

I don't know the diffence between basic and full blood work. My vet just charged for blood work period, and it was actually optional. |

I had Rocky Neutered last Thursday 12/28 and they said i had a option of IV Catheder and Blood work but that the blood work was not necessary. I told them that's weird if i go in for surgery they wont do my surgery without bloodwork. She told me that out of the two if money was a concern that she would recomend that i have the iv catheder instead of blood work however i didnt have the money but i got it and had his blood work done. On my receipt i did see a charge for it on his follow up this Saturday should i ask a specific question about the blood work they did to make sure they did do it and not charge me for it without doing it. |
the difference between "full bloodwork" and "basic bloodwork" is about $50 and 2 days around here. the "basic bloodwork" or "cbc" does a complete bloodcount while the "full bloodwork" does a complete blood chemistry profile. my vet can do the cbc in house and get results the same day. a complete blood chemistry profile need to be sent out to a different lab. most vets i know around here make bloodwork a part of the pre-op process. it can highlight any possible complications your pet may have under anesthesia and surgery. only the spaying and neutering done at the shelter allows bloodwork to be optional. |
Blood work before anesthesia is not optional at my vet. I don't know if there is a difference between standard and full bloodwork, but I can tell you that Sissy's bloodwork was $65.00. I seem to remember someone mentioning on a recent post that they chose the extra tests for liver shunt and that ran $30 - so I don't know if this is the difference or not. |
I didn't care to spend the extra for the blood work but I figured the $25 will give me more of a piece of mind. Oddly enough they found that his levels for his kidney function was high so they are going to rerun the test at their cost in house just to make sure he has no kidney problems before they do his neuter. My vet said that they like to run the blood work to be sure that they won't have any complications with the anesthesia. Good luck on the decision. |

If the vet hasn't mentioned fasting your dog odds are it's the regular blood panel. In order for the full panel to be done where they also test for shunt the dog has to fast for I think 24 hrs (don't quote me on the time for sure but I know it's a decent amount of time). Good luck with your little one. I am dropping lex off tomorrow night to get him prepped for his early morning surgery. |
Our vet also requires the basic blood testing before any procedure requiring anesthesia. Muffin had it done before her teeth extractions & also when she underwent her mastectomy last month. The cost was $30 & was done right before the procedure. When she had her surgery in December, we had them perform her annual physical exam. The heartworm test was an additional charge of $25, so evidently the bloodwork results do not give them the heartworm information they need. At least not at our vet! C.J. |
