I'm new to this and have a question that I'm sure has been asked 1000 times Hi Everyone, I just became the mommy of a 12 week old yorki-poo. He is wonderful and playful and such a love. I'm trying to potty train him and half of the time he is good about it, but he could be outside for a half an hour and come in and go on the floor. I have him crated at night and have him confined to the kitchen until he is trained. I'm at my witts end, I'm getting mad and don't want to take it out on the dog, so I put myself outside...LOL I heard that yorkies need more time to train, is this true and what advice can you give me. Thanks in Advance :) |
1st of all....:welcome4: The best thing for you to do honestly is to just do a search right here on Yorkietalk for "potty training" and you will find many articles! Reading these will give you much insight into the world of potty training! Our little Maci is completely potty trained, and it took us about 2-3 months to get it down pat. Some take longer, some shorter! The key advice I can give you is try to get on a schedule for "potty time" and stick to one method. Trying different things can easily confuse your little one, and you'll be back to the drawing board. Just have patience....he'll get it! Hi and Welcome to YT! We all feel for you, as we have all been there. At 12 weeks, your puppy will not be housebroken as their bladders are too small, and they are too young to fully understand. You will find a lot of useful info here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/for...ysprune=-1&f=6 or simply do a search located in the blue bar at the top of the page. Lots of info is provided, maybe too much, but just weed through it as best you can. Good luck, and don't get mad at your pup, it takes time.......... welcome to YT. TJCYorkie is right. there are many methods and these guys can certainly be hard to train at times. I have 2 that were really easy and 2 that are not so easy. the oldest ones were trained to go out side and I offered treats to them for doing a good job. the other 2 were trained to pee pads with only a verbal praise method and we didn't do so good. ( probably more my fault than theirs.) |

at 12 weeks old, if he's 50% potty trained, then he's at the top of his class of ALL DOGS! not just yorkies! realistically, expect it to take at least a few months up to a year to housebreak your dog. think of it this way, at 3 months old, your puppy is the equivilent of a human 2 year old. you wouldn't expect a 2 year old toddler to be potty trained would you? keep working with him and he'll get it soon enough. |

If you did your research on Yorkies then you will know that this is a hard breed to potty train. Some Yorkies never fully potty train. You just have to stick with it and give her lots of praise when she does potty where she is suppose to. I use the potty pads, it saves us from having to go outside all the time and mine is doing great with them, but we still have accidents, even at 9.5 months old. You cant get mad at the yorkie-poo, she is just a dog, she dont understand yet, she is still a puppy. Just be patient with her. Good luck! |
I know what you are going through! I have a yorkie-poo that's 13 weeks old. I like using the puppy pads (for Kobe) because they are handy when it's too cold outside or it's the middle of the night. He's really good about going right to the puppy pad to do his business (in the house), but when I take him outside, he won't go to the bathroom! |

First off, welcome to YT! Physiologically your puppy isn't even ready to be potty trained yet. My vet told me that until 4 months, their bladder isn't even prepared to hold it. So, it sounds like you're going through some of the right motions, just keep it up. Mine is 7.5 months old and not potty trained. It's frustrating sometimes, but he is trained to go on command. I take him out and say "go potty" and he goes. But if I forget to take him out every hour or two, he'll have an accident in the house. Good luck! It's frustrating, but your efforts will pay off eventaully! |
