To those who have more than one dog - Our furbaby Reese is now 1 1/2 old and is 3 pounds - we are thinking about getting another dog, a shihtzu puppy. My question is : How hard is it to go from one dog to two ? We would like to get Reese a playmate, and a slightly bigger breed that my kids can take for walks, etc...... The puppy we are considering will be about 8 pounds , give or take. Also, Reese uses puppy pads, but the new puppy will have to learn to go potty outside - I think ? Anyway, any advice on getting another puppy ? |
besides money it was really no difference to me just more kisses more pups on my lap lol |
I think it would be very easy to go to two puppies. They will have someone to play with and you won't feel so guilty about leaving them alone. Two tend to get into a little more mischief tho but I think you and the puppy would be alot happier with another one around the house. Barb |
It is only hard when you have two puppies at one time.. Then when you are training them you never know which one had the accident!! Other then that its fun!! |
I don't have a whole lot of advice except that if you do get another dog, be sure to give reese a ton of extra love. We just brought a new pup into our family and our other 2 dogs feel very threatened by her. We have to give them extra love so they know they are not being replaced. We have always taken our dogs outside to potty so I can't help with the "pee pad vs. potty" issue. Have you considered starting your yorkie on going outside? I don't have a clue how difficult that would be but it seems like it would be easier than having 2 dogs going in 2 different places. Might confuse the new baby. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck and hope that it works out wonderfully. new furbabies are so exciting....and so much work. oye...I forgot how much work it was. But very rewarding. |
We have three, they all get along great. Lots of kisses!;) ;) ;) ;) |
IMO Two dogs entertrain each other so much it is actually easier than having one. Mine chase each other constantly so I don't worry about taking them for walks for exercise. Although they are always up for a walk if I do want to take them. |
1 Attachment(s) My two love each other. They only fight over bones. My daughter has two...a silky and a yorkie....about 9 pounds and 4 1/2 pounds...they do fine, too. I have heard that it is good to have two to keep each other company. However, I am not so sure about big and little dogs mixed. Some others may have better advice there. |
Personally, I find it easier with the two. We got our second yorkie about 6 weeks ago and it's the best decision we've ever made! She keeps Topher busy and he gets into less trouble 'cause they're always playing together. Ours was definitely a good match as we had no difficult adjustment period...they hit it off right from the beginning. I understand that not everyone is as lucky and sometimes there is an adjustment period for the pups, but I think in the long run the dogs will end up liking if not loving one another. |
More the Merrier!!! Like kids ~ would not want to be an only child. Two - always someone to play with. Three - Sometimes can pick sides as who you want to be friendly with today. |
welllll.. I have 5, yep, 5 furbabies... only 2 of them are yorkies but, really, adding one more to the pack isnt a big difference at all. I love that all of mine always have someone to keep them company, they never have to be alone..... my biggest is 95 lbs and smallest is 4 1/2 lbs.... I have to watch the baby alot more than the others, but the all do great together... |
I think it's the hardest decision:rolleyes: to get a second one.....once you get through that....it's easy to get a third:aimeeyork , forth:aimeeyork or fifth:aimeeyork ...be careful..after that you'll start calling it a collection!!! That's what we had for awhile...I couldn't keep everyone's names straight. |
I say the more the merrier! Mine all 3 eat, pee, poo and sleep at the same time. They are on the same schedule and it isn't any different than having one, except for the expense. Traveling with all 3 can be a challenge, but fun, I have 2 boys and a hubby that help me when we take all 3. |
Thank you for letting me know your opinions ;) I am hoping Reese will learn to enjoy her new sister - we will be getting her in 4 weeks, and we already named her - Reagan. I started working again after being a stay at home mom for 5 years, and I think Reese would probably enjoy some company for the hours nobody is home. Which is usually only 3-4 hours at a time, but I am definitely looking forward to more snuggles and more kisses with 2 furbabies, vs. one :p |
