Help!!!!!! Shooter is 6 months old. He won't let me do anything concerning grooming with him without a fight. When I try to groom him be bites at the comb, won't open his mouth when I try to check his teeth. He is very bratty in general. How do I control him? |
I have a 6 month old who hates to be brushed. She mats easily so it's a must and we fight through it.If she bites at the brush, I let the brush bite back. After getting the pins in her nose a couple of times she gets the message. Just watch out for her eyes! As far as teeth cleaning goes they don't have to open their mouthes at first. LIft their lips and gently rub their teeth with your finger, follow with a small treat. I even wiggle my pups teeth when they loose. It takes time for them to learn to trust you in their mouth and some never care for it at all but it's necessary. Be consistant, gentle yet firm and though he may never llike grooming he'll learn to tolerate it. The trick is staying calm and assertive and treats afterwards doesn't hurt either. |
Im not saying this is right or wrong but this is what works for me....i use both a comb and brush so when i am using one i let cooper play with the other to keep him distracted then he sits in my lap and lets me groom him. I also use a toy to distract him as well....whatever he feels like playing with is what we use....works for us :) |
Sam is just starting to let me brush him. He still does the biting though. He thinks its a toy to play with. Now the blowdryer on the other hand is another story. He absolutely hates it and would do anything to destroy it. He even makes the funniest faces at it. Im hoping in time he will just get used to it all! |
He sounds normal to me. Just be patient with him. If you scold or get rough he will never learn to like it. Maybe try for just a minute or so at a time and then reward him. I made myslef a grooming arm that I attach to my counter top and that made a big difference. It's like getting a third hand. The sell them at petedg for around $20. |
I took Sunshine to the groom the first 3 times now I can brush her she stands for me. BUT I don't trim her face I get my groomer to do that for me, she has a soft spot and I'm to scared that I will hurt her. |
Grooming Hello, I place Mollie and Abbi on a table to groom them. Mollie is the worst, but I get the job done. Abbi is really great about grooming. If I try sitting down they try to get away. Hope this helps. Jan |
Thanks everyone for the advice. Shooter is my first yorkie and I didn't know what to do with him. :) |
Chewy used to bit and be horrible but he is 81/2 months and now he does great when being brushed... if I hit a tangle he gets a little upset but he is good for the most part and the brushing takes a few minutes... He is much better with his bath, just stands there and lets me do it...I trim his face and he is good about that... just holds still... However!!!! Trimmng the nails and brushing his teeth bring out the worst in him! I let the groomer trim the nails... We use a muzzle becasue we have to. And when I brush his teeth I have to hold the side of his wiskers and he tries to bit and hates it. He is not fighting as hard the past week or so and I am thinking he might be getting the hang of it!!! Hang in there it will get better!;) |
Lillie is 6 1/2 months old and she doesn't like to be brushed either...Lillie has a thick soft coat that matts too...The last time I gave her a bath I used a little more conditioner than usual and really massaged it in the matts..then I used a comb and pin brush to go through her coat...it was much easier to comb/brush her while she was wet and conditioned....and...she couldn't get away from me because she was in the sink...I wouldn't recommend hitting him with the brush or being harsh while you are trying to brush him...I would just keep telling him he is a good boy...work on him as long as you can and give him a treat...if you don't get all the matts out you can work on them at his next bath.. |
Sammie used to bite the comb, the brush and me. So I buried my face in her neck and growled REAL LOUD and now she just gives me kisses. LOL! Or if she really wants to bite, she justs nibbles and that seems to make her happy. I had to do it several times but she finally got the message that mommy is the boss!;) |
