how will my pup react with a new dog in the house???? Hi guys, I'm going to LA on Monday to check out this 8-month old male yorkie. I've been wanting to get Riley a buddy for a while now. He's only $650 and comes with all his stuff. He doesn't have his papers, but has all his medical papers. He's not nuetered. He's extremely cute and just a couple months younger than Riley. I know once I drive up there and look at him then I probably won't be able to resist taking him home. I was thinking maybe I should bring Riley with me to see how they interact. Do you think that'll be good or bad? I know some dogs get territorial in thier own house. But I want to make sure they get along before I bring him home. I'm scared I might offend Riley because he's my baby (furbaby). How do you welcome a new dog in your house? How do I introduce them? Riley loves other dogs, but I don't know how the new one wil react. He's never been to dog parks or around other dogs. Please help!!!:aimeeyork |
I will be in the same situation soon, and I was planning on taking Kodak with me when I go see the puppy. I am wondering how he will react because he rarely sees other dogs unless in pet stores or the vet. Kodaks not to friendly towards other pets, he acts scared or will snarl at them. So I hope he welcomes a playmate with open arms. |
I think its a great idea to take him with you to see how they interact with each other. Hope all goes well! |
i adopted an adult rescue yorkie (bubba) when my puppy (bunjee) was about 8 months old. bunjee was great with his soon to be fursibling when they met the first time. but when bubba came home with us and didn't leave, bunjee got territorial and mean. it took a few months for them to get along. now they still have their occassional fights, but otherwise they get along pretty well. i think something that's helpful is if both dogs are about the same size. bunjee has a good 3 lbs over bubba and tend to bully bubba with his size. |
I definately think it is a good idea for you to bring him when you pick up the new pup......let them get to know each other a little before bringing him into the home.....That is what I did when i got Bella.....I took Louie with us to get her and then when we came home I put her in the "playpen" and let him walk around and sniff and stuff for a while....and then I put him in with her and then eventually took her out and they got along fine within one day! Good luck to you and congrats!!!! |
Oh, I'm afrraid I'm in the same boat (so to speak). I posted a message a few day's ago about a worry I had about getting another puppy. Half of me wants one for a companion for Carlee and half say's, "no", she wouldn't like another dog in her house. She too loves to play with other dogs, but hasn't had much "up close and personal" play time with many. I'm thinking of asking my breeder if we can bring Carlee with us to pick a puppy so she will maybe find which one she likes best. Good luck to you, |
I got another furbaby back in August....IMO...I wouldn't bring your furbaby with you when you pick up the new one...You KNOW he isn't going to like the new puppy right away...it took Sadie(my adult) a few weeks to even warm up to Lillie..but, that's just my opinion.. |
I let Grayson stay in his crate when we brought him in so the cats could check him out and sniff him. Then we showed Grayson around and it took a good month for them to come around and stop pouting. They just tolerate him now Be sure to feed your current dog first! Show lots of love to both equally don't dote on one more than the other |
thanks guys for your posts. i'm very excited and nervous at the same time. i really wanted to get a girl so i could be girly with her and dress her up. but i think riley might like a brother. what do you guys think? i'm bringing my roomate with me so she can be objective. i keep thinking, what if the boys are home by themselves and hurt each other. i'm a bit of a worry-wart. i know they're small and all, but who knows? i let riley run around the house now, he's pretty good. i wouldn't want to crate just the new dog. :woof: |
You have to think of this way my cats got free run but Grayson doesn't as he isn't trained I know what a huge mess I would come home to. I would cate your new baby until he/she is trained |
