Cali didn't get the bulletin... ...that it is not okay to pee in the crate. I got her the extra small crate at Petsmart, and put the divider inside. She would pee in that. Then I moved the divider a couple of bars over. She still pee'd in there. Well, I've moved that divider over so far that literally, she can lay down. Turn around. That's it. And she'll still pee!! And now that her leg is broken and the doctor doesn't want her to be very mobile, this is really just ruining the whole potty training experience. I don't know what to do!! Let her have access to the pee pad inside her ex-pen? Or keep her crated and let her just pee and poop in there? I promise, I am so frustrated (about the potty problems), sad (about her broken leg), and mad (about ALLOWING her to go somewhere to get the leg broken in the first place) that I want to scream!:tongue4: :tongue4: |
I'm so sorry; I know exactly what you are going through. Penny is one of the rare dogs who doesn't care about messing where she lies. I had to put a small cloth down in her crate because if I didn't, she would pee and then splash it everywhere. With the cloth, she would pee and then lie right on top of the mess. UGH. Eventually she outgrew it for the most part. She will still make an occasional mess in the large crate. |
Try putting her food and water in there too and taking her out every 20 minutes to pee. |

Crap... now Riley is starting this. We've reduced her room to move as much as we can. Ugh! |
make her x pen so it is just large enough for her bed and a pee pad and her food. Take the door off of the crate, or remove it altogether and just put a bed in there. |
Tink has the small crate too. I made it just big enough for her to stand up and turn around. It took about a week for her to stop pottying in her crate. If she did, she had to lie in it, cause I work and can only get home at noon. I was putting a towel on the bottom to soak up the potty. Now, she can go about 4 hrs. without peeing in the crate. If she is outside the crate though, I have to watch her like a hawk. She is 16 wks. |
Loki could not hold it for an hour until he was like 5 months old. Having the water bottle up is fine for some dogs but not for others. Most people leave a full bowl of water out all the time. I used to do that and Loki would drink the entire 16oz bowl and then have to pee 15 times in the next hour. He drinks any water that is down, so he only gets a few ounces at a time. I can't leave water in his crate because he will not drink it when he is thirsty he will drink it immediately. Try watching how much she drinks. They are supposed to drink 1-1.5 oz per pound of body weight per day. Loki drinks twice that, but he's housetrained so I don't really care if I have to let him out every hour. It was extremely frustrating during crate training though. Measure the water for a few days and see if scheduling water breaks might help. |
Oh Lord thank goodness mine aren't the only weird ones. Just in the last few months (about the same amount of time I've been gone from YT), both Marilynn and Melvin have started less than cute habits. First it was the incessant barking- All. The. Time. Then we moved on to peeing under the dinning room table, so we fixed that and blocked it off. Now we've graduated to the "let's really make Mom pull her hair out" league. They've decided to not sleep through the night, at first I thought it was a potty emergency so I let Marilynn out, she was thirsty! A 3lb dog got me up at 3am, for a drink of water! Then, after that one time, the flood gates busted, every night one throws a fit over something. So I put them in the garage, they'd bark- constantly. Then I started with the flashlight trick (every time either of them starts barking, walk over, spotlight them with the light- say nothing, walk off) which works, surprisingly. Then started they peeing and pooping in the crate. I want to scream, Melvin will be 2 in February and Marilynn is just over a year old, this all started spiraling downhill a few months back. It seemed like every time we would correct one problem they'd do something WAY worse than before. Well, Melvin took the cake Monday, he peed (maybe something else though) on Marilynn. I have never in my life seen or heard of a dog who had no problems up till now, peeing on it's mate and in it's bed. I hate to admit it, but it is tarnishing my love for them. It's very frustrating to deal with. We limit their food and water at night, they are taken out for hourly potty breaks and one long one before bed (in between 10pm and 1am given the day). I just don't get it, I have a male Rottweiler who quit messing after about 2-3 months, when he learned that was his bed and he had to lie in it, it was all over. Could this be a intelligence deficiency? Like lack there of? Or do they need to know who's boss? Sometimes they're angels and I hate to give in to what they want, because I am not giving in to a 3lb dog. Everything was fine, I just don't know what happened. Help.... |
First, I'd take them to the vet for a through check-up to be sure there is nothing physically wrong. To me, they sound really frustrated and they are communicating it the only way they can. If they check out ok physically, try really increasing their walks. maybe more exercise will help. Good luck. |

I had a large load of laundry in my arms and I was walking down the hall, Melvin got right in front of me and stopped. Not being able to do anything to get him to move with my hands I told him to move, to which he backed up, (*note: we have hardwood floors through 90% of our home) so I gently shoved him with my foot, like I've done a hundred times before and sent him sliding 3 feet out of my way in front. Then, much to my surprise, HE PEED ON ME! He had just peed no less than 50 times on his walk! I know they aren't supposed to be vindictive, but that's what it feels like! Like they're trying to make me loose my mind. We haven't acquired any new animals, our home hasn't changed, he'll be two Feb. 9th, the only thing I can hope for is this is his last hurrah before the two year mark. |
