HELP washing my yorkie!..im confused!!.. lol Hello everyone! ...I have had Fergie now for like 5 weeks now...and I am having an issue on how to bath her properly...and on what products to use...I live in Canada in a small town with only a few local pet stores. I have been using a tearless puppy shampoo and a spray in conditioner. But what confuses me is how easily her hair looks dirty...but her skin seems dry.It looks like dandruff. So I bought some tea tree oil ointment for her...and am thinking of delaying her next wash. But what confuses me is how can her hair look soo oily if her skin is so dry?? am I washing her wrong?? I really dont know if i am doing everything right?? I need all the help I can get lol I would appreciate any advise!!! thankyou !!!!! |
1 Attachment(s) You might think I'm a kook but once a week Debbie gets a shower with me. I have found this to be the best thing. She will be five at the end of January and is still small at three pounds. This works out great as she gets rinsed very thoroughly which is the most important step. I use the Tropiclean Berry Clean Shampoo and the Kiwi Conditioner or the Chris Christiansen Daily Moistuizing Shampoo and Conditioner. I have never had a problem with greasy hair, dry skin, water in ears, or anything. We both get clean and there is no messy sink to clean up when the dogs shakes water all over. I wrap her in a towel when done and blow her dry. This takes less than 10 minutes. (the drying, I mean) I know some people use human hair care products but dogs' skin is different than our scalps, so I'd stick to a nice dog shampoo. I use Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner on my 3 and it works well for me. It is available at Walmart and is much more reasonable priced that some of the other types. |
I use Chris Christensen shampoo and conditioner. I also have Petsilk shampoo and Maine and Tail conditioner. I alternate using these products. Mine never have greasy hair but have a nice shine to their coats. You want to make sure you rinse all the shampoo and conditioner out of their hair. You might also consider adding a suppliment with Omega fattyacids in it. I use Missing Link. It is good for the skin and coat. I get it at Petsmart |
Sounds to me like..... 1 Attachment(s) Sounds like the conditioner you are using may be too waxy. Personally, if you're not growing a show coat, I'd go buy some of the puppy shampoo from TROPICLEAN (AWESOME product-no soap, coconut based; and no perfumes/dyes). And not use a conditioner. It shouldn't be needed, unless you're bathing her more than once a week, and as a puppy you may. If you need a conditioner, I'd just get a dematting spray/finishing spray and use it SPARINGLY after her bath (after you've towel dried her, but before you blow dry her). |

I have discovered a way to make cowboy magic detangler go further and not give that greasy look. Mix one part CM to 8 parts of water and put it in a mister bottle (like an old pump hairspray bottle), shake very well and use as a finishing spray. I use it on Gracie while she is wet after a bath, followed by a blow dry. I will rub a tiny amount of full strength detangler into knots and comb them away. I also use the CM shampoo for every part of her except her face around her eyes. For that I use Johnson and Johnson baby bath. |
I have been using #1 all systems lately and love it. it is rinsed out very easily and much quicker than any of the other shamoos I have used. it sounds like the conditioner has built up on her skin. you might want to rinse a little longer. the best cheap shampoo that I have used it the mane and tail. it is a great one to use if you don't want to pay much. blow drying, I have found, only adds to the dryness of the coat. I used to blow dry all the time and now let them dry on their own. |
The reason her hair looks oily and dirty is because a build up of shampoo and conditior. Most over the counter products are way to strong. I would suggest washing her just ONCE with Patene for humans and rinse her really well (do not use this on a regular basis). After that get some good products that people havee suggested In the mean time put what shamoo you have in a bigger bottle and add some water to make it weaker. Hope this helps Janie in Cincinnati |

It strips all the dirt and grime off AND the essential oils from the hair/body/coat. When we tested the alkalinity level of this, I think it came out to a 7. You can start dying human hair at that strength! Just an fyi. |

Pantene Pro-V shampoo has a lot of Alcohol products and by-products in it. That's my only guess as to why she'd not recommend using it on a regular basis. |
