Heat: When & how long does it last? My Reese is almost 6 months. She should be starting her first heat soon right? I want to make sure so I can have plenty of panties ready!! Also, how long does the bleeding usually last? Do they have "cramping" like we do? Will I need to give her asprin? I know it sounds stupid, but if dog cramps are anything like human cramps... Thanks for your help all!! |
I have a female that did not come into heat until she was almost 10 months, and another that came in at 7 months. A heat cycle will last 3 weeks, 1 coming in, 1 full heat, and 1 going out. |
... If they were to accept a male, will the feamle be able to be fertilized anytime during the three weeks or only during fully heat? How much does the average female bleed and does she bleed during the third week or after? What are detectable signs a female is coming into heat? |
Amy, will your vet not spay til after she has a heat cycle? Or did you buy a quality female for breeding? She is probably old enough to be spayed and have her retained teeth expracted.. |
Several months ago I was wondering the same thing about my chihuahua pup....and I found a web-site that was very helpful. I do not remember the web-site because I just printed the pages I needed and forgot about it. This may be a bit graphic for some .....but......the site explained the female's 'vulva' will change in firmness just prior to and during the heat cycle. This lady is a breeder and watches her females closely because the "breedable days" are very specific. She states that the female's vulva will normally be very soft to the touch....like the feel of pinching your own upper lip. Just prior to and during the heat cycle the vulva firms to feel like pinching the end of your nose. I tried "checking" Apple occasionally and SURE ENOUGH...I started noticing a different 'firmness'... She went into heat at age 7 months ...it lasted about 2 1/2 weeks (the bleeding) and then gone. As for the cramping.....I have no idea. She seemed fine. But she did seem a bit "bitchy" for a few days. Not as playful and slept more than usual. Try looking around the internet....'canine estrase' is the term used often. |

whispersmom2: I definitely want her spayed, but she's just over 2 lbs right now and both the breeder and vet recommend we wait until she gains more weight. |

When Biddy went into heat we didn't know what was going on - then when we realized what it was it made so much sense! She had been SO bitchy the week before!! I felt so bad that dogs can't have chocolate because I knew she was probably craving it real bad!!!! |
Zsa Zsa was 2 pounds when she have been spayed . |
... Is there any way to know with out being that 'physical'? :p Is there a diffrence in temperature, like in humans? |
