Am I the only one that gave up trying to get a bow in??
 

Esme gives me SUCH a hard time when I try to get a bow in her hair! I brush her everyday and she doesn't mind that at all. She totally relaxes and actually gets excited when she sees her brush. The minute I try to put something in her hair she gets wild. Eventually, I can get it in, but I don't know if it's worth the fight....
I have pretty much given up. Am I the only one???

Maggie hates!!! her bow......she is not the most feminine little girl yorkie that I have seen :eek: .....she has tall thin legs......sparse but growing hair.......very alpha......very athletic.......but by golly she is the only girl in the whole family and she is going to have a bow if I have to superglue it to her head :eek: ......my husband rolls his eyes everytime I wrestle her to the floor and try desperately to pull up the hair and pin the bow on :rolleyes: ...then she spends 15 minutes trying to swipe it off with her paws :D


She is a hoot and I love her even if she is not "frilly"

I feel for ya...I have Cheri who isn't crazy about her bow ... I can only say - keep practicing...What kind of bows are you using ? I used lots of the little www.petedge.com bows for my girls when just starting ...and I would wrap Cheri up in a towel so she felt secure....brush her and do her bow - and she finally got used to it....Your puppy is adorable by the way...

...I think they usually get used to it - but I know a few that really won't wear one - that's when it's haircut time !

Ok, it's probably time you all know this. I have NEVER even attempted to put anything in Simon or Hallie's hair. ever! I always figured they would chew each others heads off trying to get them out. I bet Hallie would love it b/c she is so prissy but Simon would eat me alive ;)

Lexie puts up a fight to be brushed and combed. I have to give her a brush to chew on to keep her occupied long enough to barely brush her. I tried to put a bow in her hair when she was asleep...it stayed for about 15 mintues before she scratched it out. I want her to be so girly, but my husband calls her a tomboy! Maybe the groomer can help. :jump28ib:

I, too, was beginning to feel like Lil Bit would be the only 'bowless' little girl in town....BUT....yesterday, while I was letting the grandkids linger in the bathtub....I entertained them with a "brushing and bow demonstration' with Lil Bit. The brushing is no problem, but the bow part is a laugh. Actually, I am still trying to get her to let a little 'gator clip' stay in for a while.

I got the clip in and was soon distracted with the kids. To my surprise I found the clip STILL IN HER HAIR 3 hours later!!!!!! (YEAH!!!)

Haven't tried again since then....maybe I can do this after all!!!

With Mia, I put her lying back on my lap and that's when she knows she's going to get brushed, combed, get her eyes cleaned and get her hair up. I use a tiny elastic (probably the size of the tip of my pinky) and I do three turns in her little pony tail. I have to double loop afterwards cuz her hair is long. If I would know how to attach a picture of her, I could show you, but I'm still a newbie :( (although I think I managed to put her picture in somewhere on this site). I taught her how to stay still with treats of course, but now she knows that at the end of her brushing, etc. she will get a big treat. Every morning she knows she has to have her eyes cleaned, but she will get some Cherios afterwards :)

We too have given up on the bows in the girls hair...they love to be brushed but as soon as you try to put a bow in they become totally different little girls...almost like the devil...so we have just given up on that whole thing...the only time they get a bow is when the groomer does it, they are the only one who can somehow get them to let them put one it...it is the craziest thing...they are the cutest when they have one in, esp. ones that match but it doesn't happen very often at all for us!!

I have been using a tiny jaw clip to keep Oscar's hair out of his eyes...well the other day, he wimpered off an on and I could never figure out what was wrong with him. By the end of the day, most of his top knot was down so I took the clip out and there on top of his little head was a red, hot knot! I think I may have clipped his scalp as well! I feel like such a horrible mommy! At first I thought it was a tumor! But after a couple of days it seems to be going down. If it is not totally gone in a week, we are going to the vet. So, Oscar went to the groomer and we got all that head hair cut off...now he looks like a little punk rocker...but all they cut was his head, so he looks like a shrunken head! So today, he is back at the groomer trying to get the body trimed to match his little head! But I don't care how he looks, as long as I don't hurt him anymore...I feel so bad!

Help for topknots
 

I have used barettes and clips from the "human little girl" department. They are easy to snap in, and you don't have to wrestle with your little one while you try to pull the hair through the band. It's a good starting plase until they get used to the feel of a bow and having you mess with their natural 'do. Just be careful that they don't pull them out and chew on or eat the barettes. Mine have shaken their heads and chewed their barettes as if to say, "Take that!" I bought a gorgeous crystal barette that my Abegail promptly slung across the room...guess she prefers the natural look. It took a long time to get her to let me do her topknot and now she's a pro at it. We all know Yorkies can be little terrors...just keep at it and she'll eventually give up. A breeder once told me that you have to be willing to try one more time than your dog will resist. Common sense, I know, but I got the point. Good luck!

I use the little jaw clips for maggie too.......but remember I am wrestling her to the ground :p ..so I usually only clip the ends of her hair..(not on purpose but because I am trying to clip a moving target)

I have admired the beautiful "fountain" top knots on the girlie dogs in the forum.....Maggie's is stick straight.......and shoots up like a 3 inch geyser....it is so pitiful..but by golly.... people know that she is a girl :D

today...she is sporting a lilac sparkly clip that is hanging sideways and hits her nose every time she runs........I must go refresh her coiffure :eek:

Molly will be a year old in two weeks and I just started putting her ponytail in 3 weeks ago. The first week was utter hell! She is a strong fighter! She would spin around and I just held on to the hair while she spun. When she tired, I put the rubberband on. By about day 6, she sat nice and let me put it in every day. Now in week three, she fidgets a little, but is pretty good. It's so funny cause I'm not that good at it and she has ended up with ponytails off to the side like an 80's girl more often than not! Or like someone else said, a geyser shooting straight up! BTW, the side ponytail looks absolutely adorable!

When she was 7 months old and we got her, I had to cut the hair on her ears to make them stand up. It took me a week to get it done a little at a time. Now it is sticking off 2" again and I have to try cutting again before her ears start flopping. I'm not looking forward to this adventure!

One more thing, I have to redo her ponytail 2 or 3 times a day cause she plays so hard with our maltipoo it comes halfway out and one eye is totally covered again.

You all make me laugh so much!! I can't believe I just joined this site a short time ago. I had no idea I was missing so much fun. My little Yorkie hates rubber bands and bows, too. I got the tiny baby rubber bands at Claire's. They are perfect for small amounts of hair. My female has quite a bit of thick hair on top, but my male is a puppy and his hair is very thin on top. I can still get a tiny topknot....SO cute! :D

I swear this forum is just as good as reading a great book on a Sat. night.

By the way, what does alpha mean? I keep seeing it, and it is too late to surf and find out. Looks like it has something to do with the male species.

Sadie is all girly girl. The breeder I bought her from cut the hair right in front of her top knot, so her knot is on the thin side. I am letting it grow so it will be a thicker topknot.

I bought some of those little girl hir clips at Walmart and they really do work.
I twist the hair a little before I snap the clip shut.

Also, I just bought some darling and cheap bows with the clips on them at Walmart, but those you will find in the little girls department. Really cute denim and pink ones, and tons of different styles.

Be careful though as some Yorkies might swallow them if they fall out.
I have not had that problem, as Sadie does not do well with hair in her face.

I have only had her for three weeks, and my 86 year old male neighbor, I am just sure of it, thinks I have totally lost my mind. Sadie wears bows, a silver collar with artificial diamonds, and a silver leash to match. She has a pink harness and leash to match, and we had a cold day last week, and miss priss wore a black knit sweater. I bet my neighbor about had a heart attack. LOL

Do I care - heck no I love my girl. I wonder what color I should paint her nails. Ha.

Oh yea, I also ordered her a car seat today, and this will really freak him out.

I can't believe it!!!!!!!!!!! she just stood there and let me put the bow in today.......she looks darling.....all brushed and puffed.......looking like a dainty little girl........I am grabbing the camera.

......however she just darted out the door .....rolled in the dirt and is now eating poop :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: but she still has the little bow in so what can I say???? :D First the coiffure .....next comes charm school. :p



alpha=the leader of the pack....can be either a male or female.......we humans are supposed to be the leaders but Maggie hasn't read that part....and my poor little submissive Max is led around by his strong willed housemate/sister.

Funny that you say that about people knowing that she is a girl. For some reason unless Syd is wearing her baby pink tee-shirt people just assume that she is a boy. I don't know if it is because she is barking at them and so she seems macho or what. I even put barettes in her hair and they still say..."Oh, what's his name?" Erg!
