She ran away from me yesterday I was getting the mail and I think my son opened the front door. She got out and took off in a dead sprint down the street, through an intersection (where a van had to stop to not hit me and her) down to a big gully, across the gully with me calling her the whole way and pounding the ground so hard with my feet! We ran to the other side of the subdivision where I thought about giving up, going through people's front and back yards!!! I really thought about just chalking it up and forgetting about it. She was running like the dickens!!! I finally got her (I really thought I was not going to catch her) and I know I shouldn't have, but I spanked her heine! And I didn't talk to her all afternoon. she got caged when we got home and didn't get out for a few hours. I was so pissed and my legs hurt SO BAD!!!! She almost got ran over twice during this escape and NO one even tried to help me!!!! GREAT Neighborhood huh?? They see me running scared after a furry tiny black thing and just shrug. I felt like the village idiot. WHY would she run away like that?? We've worked on obedience and the whole pack leader thing. Evidently we have a long ways to go. I need Cesar Milan. |
Ahh sorry this happened . Kodi jusmped out of the car once when he was young TG he didn't get hurt. I scolded him (No spanking though) he hid in the back of the car the whole way home. when we got home. I just ignored him for a bit. Guess what. He has never did that again:) , Now he will sit still even when a cat or a squarrel are right there. I guess he really wants to please his mommy. I hope your lil one does this too. |
That sure is scary. I am glad she did not get hit and you were able to catch her. Years ago, we had a poodle that would run out the front door and he did get hit by a car. He did make a full recovery though. Our pups can not get to the front door, we have gates up because of their potty training. But next month I am going to take them to obedience class to learn stay, etc. |
One day before Oscar past away we went to my in laws house and Oscar got out of the house when hubby opened the door to go to the garage, so he started chasing him and of course I'm all scared but instead of yelling at Oscar I started calling him and sweet talking to him, as soon as he heard my sweet talking he turned around and came running to me. That really amazed me! there was a second time at night when taking the trash out, again, husband left the door opened and then Oscar got out, I sweet talked to him and he turned around and came right back to me. Did you tried sweet talking to your doggie? I was relly amazed of the result with little Oscarito. |
Thank heavens neither one of you were hurt! That was so scary. I would have spanked her hienny too and not talked to her for awhile until I cooled down. You must have been exhausted. Carol & Buddy |
oh god, your heart must have been in your throat... i dont know for the life of me why they do that... its like they dont even hear you right???? i would of died,, ive had visions when lexi did that to me... spat!!!! spat!!! thank god your both ok.... i would have punished her too.. what a nightmare!!! please be careful, these little ones are so fast. |
Yes, my heart was in my throat I just was SCARED to DEATH!!! I had no idea where she was running to next. I did stop at the gully because by then I was out of breath and squatted down and called her like I should (and she should have responded to) but she didn't hear me or didn't want to hear me. I did it again while, once again was trying to breath and no response. I don't know why she finally stayed still long enough for me to catch her. I walked home completely out of breath, came home and took an inhaler (i do have asthma) sat down and for 30 minutes struggled to breath. My son was trying to talk to me and I'm like "Mommy is just trying to breathe right now, you need to leave me alone until I catch my breath and then I'll get whatever it is you want, (snack). |
and as you were running, you were having flashing going in and out of your mind right???? tell me about it... |
I'm so glad you finally caught her and you are both safe, and hopefully have caught your breath by now! How old is your baby? I had problems with Maddie when she was a puppy and since she's older, she doesn't take off anymore and knows the "Stay" command...except that doesn't work if she's after a squirrel or rabbit. I remember once when Maddie got away and I was chasing her through yards and she started thinking it was a game, because when I'd get anywhere near her, she'd bolt. When I finally got ahold of her, I wanted to beat her, but I didn't. Then it was the long walk home and I was also out of breath. These little stinkers sure are fast!!! |

1yr old and they sprint like they've been running marathon's for years. I'm glad you guys didn't get hurt. I know how it is when people don't stop and help. Mines chased the rabbit across this guys path and he chuckled as I ran past him. He then looked like he wanted to help when he stopped, but by then Kodak stopped. thank goodness, cuz I was loosing that race. |
I'm glad you are both safe, but I'm one of the people who don't agree with spanking or swatting. I know you were angry and scared, but unfortunately, it's likely that she'll be even harder to catch next time. I think she needs more training to come to you when called. Training isn't a one-time thing, but an ongoing process. Practice coming to you with a treat, and if necessary use a leash and pull her to you until she gets the hang of it. Do this daily and never punish your dog when it comes to you no matter what it's done. The command "sit" is also important; if your dog knows no other command than this she'll be much safer. In the past, when a dog has gotten out, I've always taken a treat to retrieve them. It sounds as if I'm rewarding them for bad behavior, but I'm rewarding them for coming to me. Since you live on such a busy street and have children, you might want to limit the access to the door in question. Also, is she in heat? This might make tempt her to run away. Remember, rewarding good behavior works so much better than punishing bad behavior. Please take this post in the spirit it was written, I don't mean to criticize you, but just offer my thoughts. Thank God she came back and I would of been the same way running to get my baby, I'm glad you didn't give up because I know you would of regreted it later as I know I would and I don't blame you for tapping her tush I would of done the same thing. |

Nancy[/QUOTE] I agree with some of the things suggested here (sorry for omitting lines) I read replies to get comments and suggestions. I just wanted to comment that I do use treats to reward him for not running off. I do scold him for things that he tests me on. I do pet him and good boy him when he does well. Some yorkies are more stubborn than others so what works for some doesn't work for all. I agree training is ongoing, I feel you have to scold them and most trainers advise you to say your commands with authority. But while running it is hard to do, lol, so I take treats and a loud squeaky toy outside. This use to make him think it was time to play and he would pay more attention to what I was doing. They get so distracted. |
Oh Wow! That is horrible! I am sorry this happened! I wonder what was on her mind??? Thankfully, Mojo hasn't done that before - if so, I probably would have done the same thing. In those situations, you just don't know what to do! I hope you are both alright and that she doesn't do this again! That stinker! ---it would "leash time" - all the time in my house probably! HA! |

And I by no means think training is a one-time thing. I've paid GOOD money for training and we've done HOURS of it with her. But, she is like a child with ADHD. She can act one way and behave at one time and if something changes in her life or anything new happens (even minor such as a new box in the house) she goes crazy and out of control. I will be back to daily leash training now. I had stopped because of going out of town for the holidays. It totally threw her off. It took us 3 weeks to get her back to normal after the kennel and we took her with us out of town on Christmas, so that's the trigger this time I think. |
Well I'm not sure how old your little one is, but if it's any consolation it gets better. Both my Newman who is now 10 yrs. old and my Bella who is now three years old used to do this to me. Newman stopped at around a year and a half or two and now I can even take him without a leash out in the front as I'm unloading the groceries and he'll just walk right behind me and never leave my side. Bella now three still will run out the door but will now come right back for the most part when she's called. Before hand like your pup she would run, run, run and like you although it wasn't right, I did at one time give her a slap on the hynie. I did it more out of fear then actually being pissed. She scared me to death. I don't know what I would have done had either of them gotten hit by a car. It really scares the hell out of you. Glad it worked out for you. Elaine |

I have learned also, that if you stop chasing, they will stop running, they want to stay about a foot ahead of me. So I just sit down, like I want to play, and when they come, it is NO SCOLDING, just lot of love and kisses. Otherwise next time they might not come. However, I live on an acreage and I'm not dealing with a city street. It might be worth a try though. |

That must have been scary!!!!!. Bengi ran away a couple of times, I hope he learns the stay command fasta because I'm so scared when this happens! |
this exact thing happen to me when bentley was about 2 months old, and it was SO SCARY! my heart was beating so hard when i finally caught him...and i was so mad! i had opened the door for a split second to check and he darted under me... he stayed in his kennel for hours after this (just like you) i feelt bad, but i can only imagine what would have happen if i didn't catch him! good thing you caught your little one! |
Cosmo has done that a few times..he gets soo close to cars too..one time he was barely few inches away from being run over. Everytime he would get out I would spank his little butt and ignore him the rest of the day. and now he doesn't run out anymore. |
OMG...I know the feeling. Jack has escaped :doghop: a couple of times. Boy, they are so fast. I was so panicked. He only made it around the corner and then he came when we called him. My first thought was to punish him but I was just so glad he came to me, all I could do was hug him! Now that we have three,:aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork my biggest fear is all of them escaping. So what we have done now is set the expen out on the front porch so that if they do sneak past me they don't get past the pen. I will gladly move it aside or hop over it whenever we come or go rather than me chasing 3 Yorkies down the street. We have it configured so that the mailman still has access to the mailbox but the front door is secure. |
I did that about half way into the run. I squatted down and stopped, but she wasn't looking back to notice. And she was too far ahead for me to talk sweetly and her hear me very well. It was windy. I did think of it though, my trainer taught me that, but Zoie doesn't respond outdoors very well. |

I have a Boston Terrier that is like a DEMON when he smells outside. Inside, he is the perfect dog! He has been trained and follows any command given, but let him outside, PSYCHO DOG! |
OMGoodness! You must of been terrified:eek: ! I'm so happy you were able to catch her:thumbup: |
