Yorkie pup
 

We have just aquired a yorkie pup who is 6 weeks old we picked him up at 4oclock today but he has only had about 2tsp milk since then is this normal we have formula milk of breeder and have tried him on some weetabix following breeders instuctions.We are feeding him with a baby bottle all he seems to do is sleep.Would he be able to take a bath?Am I feeding him right? I will stay up with him tonight have booked him into the vet tommorow but just need some advice for tonight.

If he is still needing his bottle then he is WAY to young to be away from his mommy..and weetabix is dangerous for small dogs because it is FULL of fibre which as you all know is to make us poop..well to dogs its effect is doubled and can cause diarrea,which could be fatal for such a small puppy as the smaller they are the quicker they fade.I learnt this the hard way...I LOVE weetabix and used to give Jess a spoonfull when I ate it.Well she got serious diarrea and had it for 2 whole days..I was lucky that she was 6 months old and big enough to handle it.At 6 weeks old I wouldent bathe him either,your vet will tell you when you can bathe him and its usually after the second set of shots.By the time you get your pup he should be on damp kibble or canned food...I wouldent take a pup home that still needs milk.YOu should talk to your vet about this.Good luck.

I think that 6 weeks is a little bit too young to be away from the mother, i think the minimum age they should be away from their mum is about 8 weeks. i definately think you should hold on the bath.. 6 weeks and being so tiny, the pup probably could catch the chills.

welcome to YT and congrats on ur little baby, 6 weeks is VERY young, whats his weight and why did this breeder let u take him home?
This is BIG responsebility, u could mix his dry food with a bit of boiled water to make them soft and add some wet puppy food i would also mix his milk with the dry food and feed him every few hours. make sure he drinks and keep nutrical on hand incase he gets lethargic on u, these young tiny babies crash easly and need 24/7 care!
DONT bath him for the next few weeks!!
Let ur vet check him out properly.

your 6 week old should no longer need to be fed from a bottle and should have been eating on his own by now...and should still be at home with his mom. :mad:

I suggest you get "royal canin baby puppy food" add a bit of water, microwave it for about 20 seconds to take the chill off, let it absorbe the water getting a bit soft then add a bit of formula if you like but not necessary...I then mash it up till about 8 weeks then I dont add anything to soften it because their milk teeth are in and need things to chew. I keep them on baby puppy food till they leave my house and send some off with the new owners to use for a bit longer then change to puppy food till at least one year old. I believe the fatter the better the first year! :D

if that doesnt work go buy jared baby food the chicken sticks and feed your baby that to get him eating on his own, give him pleanty of water too!

Your breeder is irresponsible for sending home a pup that has to be bottle fed let alone this young...Please take him to the vet and make sure he has the ability to eat on his own...perhaps there is a reason she was still feeding him by bottle which wont be good news to you.

he should have not left home until at least one puppy shot and totally weaned and on dry food (mix). That time is no earlier than 10 weeks and better at 12 weeks with two shots.

oh my, I hope everything works out well out for you. If anything you will get very good advice on this forum. I to think 6 weeks is to young for any pup big or small to be taken from the mommy. Make sure you you watch her very closely and have a vet check her her out.

You have been given a tiny bundle of fur love at a very young age.

I am pretty confused as to why any breeder would give a pup to a new home who still requires a nipple to be fed but since you have him now there isn't much good to question your breeder to you. It of course doesn't do any good to make you feel uncomfortable and that is the last thing I want to do.

Keep your baby warm and fed and please give us an update after his vet visit.


You sound like you are being a wonderful owner wanting only the best for your little one. Does your little guy have a name? Please keep us posted on his progress.

Gosh 6 weeks is awful young to be taken away from his mom. Our breeder would not let us take our babies until they were 8 weeks...or until they were ready to leave their mother.

Did your breeder say it was ok for you take him?
