question about size OK. so we got our yorkie when she was right about 8 weeks, on December 2nd. We took her right to the vet, and she weighed 2.9 lbs. Its been almost 4 weeks, and she's grown so much i'm starting to wonder if it's normal. THe mom and father are 5 and 7 lbs.. she's now just about 12 weeks, and she's over 5lbs. She eats like her 3 meals a day and gets a treat for pottying outside, aside from that she's gets nothing else, no table food or anything and i'm just wondering if she's already 5 lbs, what the heck is going on here. shes doubled in all dimensiosn in 4 weeks, is this possible for a yorkie? paul |

I am certainly not an expert - in fact a new yorkie owner.... but from what I understand size can not really be determined at all. Since there is really no such thing as a mini or toy yorkie - most times sized is "quessed" based on the size of the parents and the parents line. I have been told that you can expect for your yorkie to be double the size they are at 6mo. My Daisy was 4mo old on Christmas as is 1.13lbs... and by her rate of growth... we expect for her to be about 2+ at 6mo.... making her around 4lbs full grown. Which if you go back to her parents (mom is 4lbs, dad is 2 1/2 lbs) that would be close. It does sound like yours is growing really really fast... what does the vet say... is that normal growth and size? |
some people on here have larger yorkies we call them teapots. They are still as cute and loveable as the small ones. Sounds like your gonna have a biggie |
she's got a vet appointment for her shots this friday. we're definately going to say something. I'm very confused. she's 11 weeks and just about heavier then her 2 parents.. it's strange. we're giving her 2-3 handfulls of food every day, and treats inbetween, i figured better to be overfed (as a puppy) then malnourished. but i'm no expert either, we're just going by what i read online |
Puppy's weight cannot never be guaranteed and weight can also come from the gentics of their grandparents, great-grandparents... Just because the parents are a certain size will not guarantee this is what your pup will be near. Sounds like you will have a lovable, cute, larger size yorkie pet. Rule of thumb is to double the weight at 12 weeks of age, but this is only a guess and weight can be different. If you want a pup to be a certain weight it takes a lot of researching the weight of the dogs in its genetics' framework. I hope this helps. T. |
crap. figures i'd get a fatty. anyway she is real cute, and we're not hung up on her being small. as long as she's healthy i dont care, and she's very energetic.. we'll talk to the vet too |

i know its probably a little more than disappointing when you pay for something and it turns out different than expected, but some of the smaller ones have more health problems for one. And you really never know if she is getting the size from her grandparents or whatever is in her line. They can all be loved the same. And they sure love us the same back. |
Hi! There's no real way to determine a puppys adult weight, but she should be able to get an estimate by using a puppy weight chart. She should be a larger yorkie, but we love them here!:p  |
I think when you buy a puppy at the age of less than 2 months (8 weeks) and the pup already weighs 2.5 lbs then (half the weight of parents!) it looks like it's going to be a big one. Even though the parents are small. It still can happen that she'll stop growing early, I've read stories like that here.... So you'll only know when the pup matures |
Sounds like you are going to have a bigger baby, but that just means there will be more to love! Our friends have a 13 lb 1 year-old, and he is as cute as can be! I agree that just looking at the parents can be deceiving. Our Penny is just over 7 lbs, but one of her brothers is 12 lbs and another is 9 lbs. I would just talk to your vet about the proper amounts of food and make sure your new baby is healthy. Other than that, just be prepared for years of kisses! |
1 Attachment(s) I just want to give you a little advice on the BIGGIE.... My Tootie is a "Teapot", BIG one... 16 lbs and he is WONDERFUL!!!!! Yes, he was bigger than expected but he is GREAT! I wouldnt trade him for the world! He is big enough to be tough and small enough to be a baby! Dont get me wrong, my Hopey is 4 lbs. and she is Precious! I have the opposite ends of the spectrum of yorkies and love them both, DEARLY! Here is my "teapot" boy..... |
It does sound like your going to have a Teapot. Buddy was 5 1/2 lbs at 14 wks. He is full grown now and is 13.5lbs and I would not want it any other way. Be happy he's healthy. Over feeding does not make a Yorkie bigger only fatter. If it is in their genes to be big then they will be big. Enjoy. Carol & Buddy |
hahha... yeah we really dont care at all if she's a "TEAPOT".. actually I'm kinda hoping shes a bit bigger, i just was unsure b/c we thought she'd be right in the middle of her parents, and she's already bigger (in lbs) than the two of them.. or at least she's close. anyway thanks for the kind words and cute pic. i guess looks of the parents can be deceiving.. we didn't know that, but it's no big deal |
I wish my chelsea is a little bigger. She is 4lbs at 6 months. She is picky eater. For comparison you can use the chart, but the gestimate triple the weight in 8 weeks and double it in 12 weeks works fine for my puppy. http://yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm |
We are the owner of a 9 month old Yorkie named "Taylor". He is a 11 lbs, a definite Teapot! My husband is happier that he turned out larger than we thought. We love to take boat trips and since Taylor is piddle-pad trained it makes it easy...plus is his a sturdier size for boating. When he we got him he was so tiny that he would get under an "L" shaped sectional leather couch and it would take more than two of us to try to lift it and get him. Now he is such a "Bouncy" size that we don't worry about shuffling our feet to avoid causing him injury and he still is small enough to fly in his soft-sided carry-on bag to fly with us in the cabin on trips. Taylor definitely isn't a "Purse-Dog" but he's a wonderful bundle of LOVE! Someone on here said that "Yorkie's are like a box of chocolates... You never know what you are going to get" And that's true even if the parents are small it doesn't mean that one of the puppies won't turn out much bigger. We love him so much and I'm sure that you will adjust to the notion that your furbaby might be a little larger than you thought. (More to love!) |
That sounds like my baby. He was 2.25 lbs. when we got him at 7 weeks and he now weighs 5.5 at 13 weeks. I guess we'll both just have two big adorable yorkies. :) |
First of all -- WELCOME TO YORKIE TALK It sounds like your precious little bundle of love will be JUST THE RIGHT SIZE. Like so many people here have already said Yorkies come in many sizes. One of my furkids is on the small side at 3.25 lbs and lardbutt Chizzie is a 6.75 lb. yorkie in a 7.75 lb. body -- boy that girl loves to eat! Sometimes these little guys take huge growing spurts and then slow down. You have the right idea -- talk to your vet. |
My two girls are so different in size, weight, hair and looks. My Sissy bother is double her size You can prevent them from being fat..but not big or little So , what can you do ..you love them any way.. |
I agree with the others that your baby will be a 'teapot'. My Baxter weighed almost 5 lbs at 12 weeks, and is now 13 lbs full grown. He grew in leaps and bounds the first 9 months, then slowed down. He's much sturdier than Snickers (8lbs) and I don't have to hover over him, worrying about him getting hurt. Enjoy your teapot, they are a joy! :animal36 |
