In heat for the first time...Please help. My Baby is 7 mos. old and is in her first heat. I noticed little drops of blood on the floor and on the comforter on our bed. I have never had a female who wasn't fixed and I am not sure what to expect. This is kind of a gross subject matter and I am sorry for that but I just thought this forum has helped with other issues I may as well give it a shot. I got her special panties with little pads. She doesn't seem to mind it too much but I can tell its annoying her a bit.( I am not so sure of how she is supposed to go to the bathroom it has an opening at the tail but thats for #2. ):shocked7q I just don't know too too much about this when it comes to doggies. like ... How long does this last for? How often will she go in to heat? ( every month? every few months?) What can I do to make her more comfy? Will it get heavy or will she just spot? Is she going to have to go to the bathroom in her panties? Any help would be appreciated deeply! |
you will have to take off the panties for her to go to the bathroom. as far as bleeding goes, it can be heavy or light. it can last from 5-10 days. each dog and period is different. they go into heat about every 6-12 months. just make sure you keep her in sight and away from male dogs. they can smell this up to a mile away and if you have any strays in the area, they can smell the odor. don't let her outside with out a lease or being fenced in. we have seen too many accidental pregnacies on this forum that was too scary for words. i hope this helps |
I've been reading up on this as I get my little girl in several weeks, I'm going to have her spayed right away. |
It sounds like you are in need of some guidance. Not all dogs bleed heavily but you want to protect your furniture and carpeting. The hole in the panties is probably not for pooping but for her tail. These panties are most likely made for several types of small breed dogs, some of which might have long tails. I strongly suggest that you get her spayed as soon as you can after she is safely out of heat. I have very strong feelings on this subject. I know you love your dog and unless you know what you're doing it is very risky to breed dogs. Even when you do know what you're doing it's risky. Often times nature needs a lot of help and I'm sure you don't want to lose her. The more times your dog goes into heat the more risk she has of developing pyometra, which you can read all about here: http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/pyo.html Years ago due to our ignorance, our five year old yorkie, Cecily died from this and it didn't have to happen. I hope sharing her story will keep others from the heartbreak her loss caused our family. Your dog should not be outside without you. Even in the best fenced in yard, a big dog can easily get through a fence. The drive to mate is very strong. A tiny dog outside without supervision also makes an easy meal for a hawk or owl if you have those in your area. |
