Breeding, Breeding, Breeding? Because we're trying to get Monster more comfortable with other people and have him make puppy friends 4 times a week while I go to the Gym we bring him to this cute little babysitting service where the dogs are separated into groups of different breeds but of the same size and age. He's in a group of about 6 puppies and is watched by different employees. He stays there for about 2 hours. It's really cute. Anyway, Monster has gotten very attached to this little 6 month old King Charles Cavalier named Stella. Her owner and I were talking, since they really seem to like eachother and neither of our dogs are papered or have fancy pedigree...should we breed them? We laughed and said we could call it a "King Chorkie" What do any of you know about mixed breeds? They're very popular right now, and her Cavalier is only 6 pounds. We thought maybe the puppies would be funny lookin' kind of cute. |

2. The shelters are full of them There is a post on here titled "Before you breed your unpapered dog........ " that contains a letter from an Animal Control employee that is forced to gas to death hundreds of mixed breed dogs a week. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...&highlight=gas Read it first and then ask how funny it would be. :( |
That is absolutely horrible, and incredibly disturbing. Of course, we would never let any of the puppies go to a pound. In fact, since we've mentioned it, the people who have been asking to adopt the potential puppies have been our friends and family. |
I'll try to be as nice as I can - but WHY ??? I honestly hope you research the dog population problem we have - it's epidemic and that's only adding to the problem...We all think our yorkies are the cutest things - but it doesn't mean we should be breeding them...Mixed breeds have always been popular - that's why the shelters are full of them.:( |
PLEASE don't do this....:( Family and friends get tired of pets too...not just the other guy. |
Not a good idea. Shelters are filled with mixed breeds. Why not have your family and friends look there if they'd like a puppy. |
I don't think it would be a good idea. Shelters are filled with the offspring of what people initially thought would be a cute mix. |
We have been privileged to share the past 12 years with "Mozart", a mixed Shih-Tzu/Maltese/Silky. If the sire (champion Silky) had not kept getting out to 'visit' the mixed dam down the street - we wouldn't have Mr. Mozart. Though stubborn at times, he is such a gentle soul, whom we absolutely adore. Having said that, I will state emphatically that I would NEVER purposely cross-breed just for the end results. There are so many lovable, adorable mixes already here in shelters - waiting to love and be loved by a family. |
Horrible idea!!!!!!!!! |
I agree with all of the above. |
:thumbdown Don't think it would be a good idea...........keep it as a "cute" thought and don't breed them. Visit the pound, you're heart will break as you pass the cages of the many "mixed" breeds looking through the wire with their big eyes begging for a home. Keep your life simple!!!! I've owned a mixed breed I purchased from a breeder and she was the love of my life.........but she was a "breeder's mistake." But I loved her but I think more and more people are going with purebreds for quality and health issues. JMO |

Read this article, it is a sad eye opener and good reason to think twice before considering breeding. http://www.crean.com/jimwillis/hcy.html As a caution, someone I have known for a couple of years with two pet Yorkies decided to breed them. I didn't know they were not neutered/spayed. The owners intent was puppies for friends and family. The female had her puppies, five of them. Four died within a few days of birth she came close to losing the mother, the surviving pup is being cared for by a kind Vet Tech who was willing to take on the task. We are still unsure if this sole pup will make it or not. This was the first time this person ever tried breeding. If anything could possibly go wrong, it did which she was unprepared for and had no idea that what happened could possibly happen. Both her Yorkies are scheduled for spay/neuter mid January. |

That's awesome thought that your little fella found some playmates. Nothing like a doggie having a doggie friend to play with.:) |
I guess you know everyone's opinions by now. Please get Monster neutered before he starts learning undesirable male traits. As for as the mom of the King Charles Cavalier, she should have her spayed. Unless she is determined to try to breed her and risk her life the sake of getting more "cute puppies" she should know that the more her dog goes into the heat the better the chance she has of contracting Pyometra. http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/pyo.html We lost our 5 year old yorkie Cecily due to our ignorance back in 1979 and I wouldn't want to wish that experience on anyone. |
It was really just an idea we talked about in passing, not something we had seriously discussed and considered before I came here for advice. I don't want any of you to think that I knew all of this and thought about it anyway, I'm not on a mission to pimp my dog. They both had such sweet dispositions and my future sister-in-law (who owns a maltese) asked me if I was going to breed Monster because she fell in love and said "If you ever do, I want one of his puppies!" But yes, upon getting all of this information it does not seem like a good idea. We wre just hypothesizing about how cute the puppies would be - but obviously if I had decided to act on it, I would have gotten help. Our intention was never even to sell the puppies like they do with puggles or maltipoos. But yes, Monster will be neutered as was my original plan with him. |
