Will my babies get along??? Hello! I am new to the forum and new to the yorkie world. I am going this weekend (10/16) to look at a little baby girl yorkie. I only have one concern. I have a 5 year old cat (Toby) who is my baby. He greets us at the door everyday and he is a big part of my life. My question is...how are yorkies with cats? I am so afraid they won't get along. Does anyone have a yorkie and a cat?? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!! :) |
You would need to introduce them gradually to each other. For instance, keep your little puppy in a crate when you first bring it in the house, and then let the cat sniff him, and the puppy will get a chance to sniff the cat, too. Give your kitty lots of attention and maybe an extra treat or two at first. They'll get used to each other, and I'll bet they'll become best buds. My son had a 2 year old cat and then got a tiny chihuahua puppy. The cat was offended at first, but now they run and chase and roll around together and have a wonderful time. We no longer have cats since we travel a lot and they didn't like travelling. When Higgins sees a neighborhood cat.....he trees it! Little devil. |
My babies met the cat at my parent's house the other day, and my yorkies were quite playful and inquisitive, whereas the 16 pound cat was SO scared she ran away hiding! Just make it as easy on both animals as you can =) GOOD LUCK! |
what i did was...i held my dog while i let my cat (sniff) ~baby~for a while...that seemed to work well they both played with each other and even ate together.....but i did notice that my cat (kiko) would get upset when i would give alot of attention to (baby) so i would give them both the same attention..well my cat passed away a couple of weeks ago and (baby) still goes around the house and looks for him...but i would recommend that you watch them carefully and give them both the same attention....! good Luck! |
Hi and welcome to YT. We have two outside cats. One of which stays on our back deck 24/7 and has no desire to roam. The other, typical out all night and hides during the day. Both of which are fully declawed front/back as they used to be inside cats. Anyway, Schatzie pounces on Kitty Brat our deck cat and licks her to death. Kitty Brat has the most patience in a cat Ive ever known. However, when it comes to Tigger, she hates Schatzie and runs as fast as she can to get away or bats at her. It has a lot to do with the cat's personality. Has your cat ever been around other animals? I think the previous posts gave superb advise and will help you out alot. If your cat has claws please watch closely that it doesn't hurt your new baby!! One claw swipe across your babies face will probably make your Yorkie hate cats forever most likely. This is just from my own experiences though. Hope you continue with YT as we all here love to share our stories and pictures. Good luck, and I am envious that I am not getting another baby Yorkie...Yorkie's are like Lay's potatoe chips, "just can't have one"... :D |
Lot's of good advice here. We have introduced new pets to the house and for the most part haven't had any problem. One thing we did that seemed to really help was not introduce the pets to each with the whole family around. Removing the other family members helped get rid of the pets need to protect while they were getting to know each other. We had one puppy that was trying to investigate a cat and a neighbor child picked up the cat and threw it on the puppy. We were so mad. The cat went crazy and scratched the puppy badly right on her nose. That dog hated cats from that moment on. If she hadn't had that first bad experience she may never have been that way. angie |
My yorkie and my cat get along really well, they play together and everything. He has been around dogs before her and he likes them also so he had no problem with her. She loves everyone and everything and since he was here first she has no problem with him either. My grandma has an older cat and she doesn't like Gabby, she is mean to her and tries to scratch her(but she is mean to all the other animals). So it just depends on the cats personality I guess. I am sure that the puppy will like the cat though. |
